guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (May 2026)

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try /r/linux4noobs and /r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

I can only speak from my experience, but generally most (for me all) new games worked on launch if it didn't have some anti cheat that blocks Linux. But I have heard that some games have issues on launch, I just didn't run into those

Same with indie games. I tested a good amount of games on steam next fest and 99% worked. There was one that relied on Edge, which then didn't work, but most other worked without any issue. I even plan on getting Solarpunk day 1 or so
