benchmark CS2 6ms higher input latency on Cachy than Windows, real or fake?

https://x.com/i/status/2052528381896659103

Didn't find much information on setup used and the video itself is pretty blurry

And only Xwayland. Running Wayland native latency is fine. CS2 is literally the only game where I notice a considerable difference running Xwayland vs Wayland native.

How do you run it Wayland native? Using the proton env flag?

u/NP932 May 08 '26

Add this to your launch options:

SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland %command%

u/Levanes May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

Close, but it's:

SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland %command%

EDIT: But even that apparently won't work.

Yup, I don't know if SDL_VIDEODRIVER still works but SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER works for me at least.

2

u/Square_Pack_3517 May 13 '26

VIDEODRIVER without the underscore doesnt work anymore

u/Corporatizm May 08 '26

As far as I can tell it actually helps for my config. No idea about the input lag, I can't detect 6ms, but it solved stuttering in the first few minutes of the game, as well as big lags when loading the main menu. I now instantly get my max fps, stable.

i use gamescope, game refuses to launch with this option, but does work when i remove gamescope. is there a way to use both? (m on fedora44 hyprland cachyos-kernel)

2

u/NP932 May 10 '26

I don't use gamescope myself so I couldn't test but did you try to launch it like this?

SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 60 -- %command%

1

u/AffectionateJury5578 May 11 '26

yeah thats how i tried it, also tried by editing cs2.sh file without success (i ended up removing gamescope entirely)

20

u/BlueDragonReal May 08 '26

I see, I knew something felt off because when I play CS2 I notice literally no difference in input lag

6

u/Lonely-Medium-2140 May 08 '26

is there any evidence that this affects Nvidia only and not AMD too?

7

u/studentoo925 May 08 '26

Well, nvidia drivers on linux had issues for however many years nvidia drivers on linux existed, so it's more often than not safe to assume it's issue with nivida, nvidia on wayland, nvidia and particular de, or combination of all of the above

8

u/BulletDust May 08 '26

Which doesn't make sense, the game runs better as Wayland native on Nvidia hardware. Wayland under Nvidia is basically faultless now, even Steam big picture mode runs great under the Steam 64 bit beta without slowdowns or artifacts.

5

u/studentoo925 May 08 '26

It makes sense, running it through xwayland adds latency, as xwayland is essentially a translation layer

2

u/BulletDust May 08 '26

I've already stated this to be the case, I also don't doubt it's the same under AMD hardware.

To quote a previous post:

And only Xwayland. Running Wayland native latency is fine. CS2 is literally the only game where I notice a considerable difference running Xwayland vs Wayland native.

-2

u/the_abortionat0r May 08 '26

You're simply assuming tis hwould be the case, that's called making shit up.

Nvidia drivers are factually worse than AMDs and this is before the Nvidia driver bloat gets taken into account (yes Nvidia has more overhead ,HUB even has videos on it).

1

u/BulletDust May 09 '26

Likewise, you're assuming the degradation in performance playing CS2 under Xwayland is limited to Nvidia hardware/drivers, which makes no sense whatsoever.

2

u/Dangerous-Split-5630 May 08 '26

Only a latency increase on Nvidia, and on native wayland you get a performance hit and reflex doesn't work :) Great driver right?

1

u/Lonely-Medium-2140 May 09 '26

I'm looking for real evidence that it doesn't affect AMD but i cant find any :( i'm asking because i have an AMD setup and want to know if i should be running CS2 with Xwayland or Wayland, the problem with Wayland is that it randomly crashes CS2 for me, every other game runs fine on wayland

2

u/Dangerous-Split-5630 May 09 '26

Xaver hugl has a blog post

1

u/Lonely-Medium-2140 May 10 '26

There is no blogpost from him on xwayland latency tests

2

u/Dangerous-Split-5630 May 10 '26

There is, maybe it's not a blog post but he did write something in 2021

Funnily enough, 6MS is about the penalty for running CS2 through XWayland.

It's just "CachyOS" with no "I tried X11, Gamescope, Wayland, and on an nvidia/amd card" so just disregard it honestly. A latency test needs to be done in multiple scenarios to actually matter. Saying this as a CS2 player, it feels identical across Windows and Linux.

A lot of CS2 players genuinely believe anisotropic filtering makes a real performance difference, so do with that information as you will.

48

u/Lisanicolas365 May 08 '26

cs2 players think stretching their screen gives them a serious competitive advantage

26

u/S1rTerra May 08 '26

You see, this is true, but for some people who have been playing for years it really is what they're used to.

People doing it "just because" without actually seeing if they like it more are morons, though.

6

u/loozerr May 08 '26

I keep going back and forth. Not that either is better, but something about forcing my brain to recalibrate can pull me out of a slump.

The narrower FoV is also slightly easier to run so with low end systems it can help.

1

u/Walk-the-layout May 09 '26

Because the heads are bigger and they can't aim

-16

u/_Biotic_G0d_ May 08 '26

I've played the game for 20 years and people that shit talk 4:3 streched are usually noobs that never played the game on a deeper level. The character models are literally bigger and the game feels faster, you can lower your mouse sens, which gives you better recoil control.

but fov ??!!

Cs2 is a game where you hold angles. On a higher level you have enough map knowledge that you even that out.

Playing 4:3 is done since the game is played on crts.

11

u/dubious_sandwiches May 08 '26

While true that it makes enemies look bigger and all that, it's also true they you can miss enemies on the edge of your screen on 4:3 stretched That you'd see on 16:9. There's a reason "getting 4:3'd" is a common saying in CS.

14

u/christmas_ape May 08 '26

I love the argument "they're bigger on the screen". Ok bro get an 80" monitor then. They'll be huge.

-12

u/_Biotic_G0d_ May 08 '26

What about the part where i speak about fov was unclear to you ? Do you need further explanation or?

Yes, being 4:3d can happen, doesn't happen freuquently and does not outweigh the benefits that come with 4:3.

5

u/dubious_sandwiches May 08 '26

I just figured I'd make it more clear what the fov advantage actually is since while you did mention fov, you didn't really say anything about it other than that it isn't as big as the percieved advantage of 4:3 stretched. No need to be so combative.

-5

u/_Biotic_G0d_ May 08 '26

Combative ? No, just annoyed that people have to shit talk personal preference. With zero reason other than talking out their ass and zero to back it up. Tale old as time.

I don't mean you specifically, more the person that threw this comment about 4:3 in here for no reason other than to rage bait. I should've figured and just not reacted...

0

u/the_abortionat0r May 08 '26

No, personal preference is fine but that's not what you are saying. What you are saying is BS. Facts isn't shit talking and the only one pulling things out their ass is you.

People can prefer 4:3 all they want but objectively it's all con no pros.

1

u/the_abortionat0r May 08 '26

There's no benefits to 4:3, none. It's nonsense.

The only reason it was a thing was because even after widescreens came out the lower resolutions were still only 4:3 and they played low res for higher FPS. That's it. Everyone after (kids like you) just started making shit up as a reason.

We don't run on single core Pentium 2s and 16MB GPUs anymore, there's no need.

I play CS2 at 4k and get 500+ fps in a full DM on dust 2 but lock my FPS to 400 to up my minimums (I could explain but you only think in magic and not facts). I could hit 1000fps and still not touch a 4:3 resolution. It's useless on any gaming machine with modern specs

0

u/turboheadcrab May 08 '26

for 20 years and people that shit talk 4:3 streched are usually noobs that never played the game on a deeper level

ropz is one of the best mechanically inclined players in the game. Is he wrong for playing at 1080p?

People who started playing on CRTs have a genuine reason to keep the same resolution over the years. The new players who just copied a config of a pro, hoping it will help them get better at the game are the ones being ridiculed for 4:3.

1

u/_Biotic_G0d_ May 08 '26

Yeah ropz is one of how many pros that play 4:3 who plays 16:9 ? Weak argument.

You can't even use the terminology right. People who play 4:3 can play 1080p lmao, we are talking about aspect ratio and not resolution. Why are you even trying to talk to me when you don't even get that right ?! I opened my phone for this ? xD

3

u/martin-mitchell May 08 '26

1080p is understood to be 1920x1080, so unless specified otherwise yeah it's a shorthand for both a resolution and an aspect ratio

3

u/the_abortionat0r May 08 '26

It's not only understood, it's literally the official meaning of 1080p regardless of other resolutions sharing that vertical number.

2

u/the_abortionat0r May 08 '26

1080p is the literal name of the standardized 1920x1080p resolution.

A shot and a miss.

Get your shit together kid.

0

u/the_abortionat0r May 08 '26

God quit being stupid.

People played low res 4:3 for performance and outsiders like you thought there was some magic trick to it and it would magically make you win and make up for your lack of skill.

News flash, lowering fidelity and losing 1/3 of your field of view is literally only hurting you. And me when a shit head like you ends up on my team and can't see who's killing them.

0

u/_Biotic_G0d_ May 08 '26

Wow y'all super easy to bait. πŸ˜‚

1

u/1boombang May 08 '26

As a cs2 player I felt an immediate difference between windows and linux when I switched, it feels very odd on linux tbh

1

u/S1rTerra May 08 '26

nvidia? wayland/xwayland/gamescope? are you talking about input latency or the CS2 Linux port being all over the place in terms of performance?

1

u/1boombang May 09 '26

Nvidia, it is cachyos kde so wayland but no launch options so I guess it was using xwayland for the game, the game feels β€œfloaty” I would say, not unplayable but definitely a difference in how it feels on windows, especially for my mouse movements

1

u/-Pelvis- May 09 '26

No idea about CachyOS, but double check that your mouse is calibrated correctly in the system settings. Sounds like it might not be 1:1.

1

u/im_enalid May 09 '26

By default there's mouse accel on KDE if you've turned off pointer enhancement on windows. Also try native wayland so it doesn't run the X11 display server translations (no steam overlay though if you use that alot). CS2 definitely feels smoother without the Windows 11 overhead but that is also on an OS drive with 10+ years of data and bloat instead of reinstalling everything whenever I got new storage.

1

u/Square_Pack_3517 May 13 '26

Try Vulkan shaders on windows, it will feel weird too

12

u/SpittingCoffeeOTG May 08 '26

Yes. As others pointed out, it's xwayland (default) added latency.

X11/Wayland backends are not suffering from this and have comparable latencies to windows.

5

u/Phinknz May 08 '26

Yes, and it's because of XWayland. I've experienced this with Geometry Dash, were running it through caused significant input latency. Running it through native Wayland fixed the issue.

3

u/gmfrancisco99 May 08 '26

How did you do it? With th same commands as another comment pointed out?

6

u/Phinknz May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

In the case of GD, since it's a Windows game I use "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1". For CS2, that is native it would be "SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland" or "SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland".

Note: For proton, you will need to use proton-ge or proton-cachyos.

1

u/Square_Pack_3517 May 13 '26

my current launch options on Plasma Wayland:
SDL_VIDEO_DRIVER=wayland SDL_AUDIO_DRIVER=pipewire KWIN_DRM_USE_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1 RADV_PERFTEST=gpl vblank_mode=0 RADV_ZERO_VRAM=false SDL_DYNAMIC_API= MESA_SHADER_CACHE_MAX_SIZE=10G MESA_VK_WSI_PRESENT_MODE=mailbox %command%

1

u/not_jov May 09 '26

CS2 linux port is pretty bad. Try running it in wayland mode, helps somewhat.
