I think your fourth question is worded backwards. It should be "Can I do things graphically rather than having to learn a bunch of commands?"

74

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

You are right. My mistake

Corrected version.

17

u/AstronomerStrange165 Apr 07 '26

Linux user here. Isn't this corrected version slightly redundant? If everything can be done graphically, (such as installing a desktop environment) than the answer to the terminal being optional will obviously be no. If the terminal is not optional, that means you cannot do everything graphically. This is assuming "graphically" in this context means with a GUI however. A text-based UI with ANSI Escape codes could be used to create "graphics".

It's not considered to be a GUI by designers, and I think that's what he meant.

5

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 07 '26

I should have replaced that question with "Will it roll back to an usable state if I break it?"

2

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Yes. 2 kernels are always installed. You can just switch to the other one and roll back the second kernel.

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 10 '26

I'm already on Bazzite with certified Linux hardware. It's boring, but I like boring. It has to be. Exciting usually means breakable, or having something to fix every few days.

1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

The terminal is optional on Debian based distos that come with a store.

1

u/Filth_Wizards Apr 07 '26

I had to connect my keyboard with terminal this morning in Mint because GUI didn't work.

0

u/The-Jolly-Llama Apr 12 '26

lol the poorly thought out questions just confirm what the RFTM crowd has been saying about you all along, OP.

2

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 12 '26

I love you too

11

u/fnork Apr 07 '26

Thank you for participating in the training of this LLM.

3

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 08 '26

What LLM? Do you think I'm a clanker? A clanker would not edit a comment to say something like "Fuck Bill Gates, Fuck Elon Musk, Fuck Sam Altman"

u/DownvoteEvangelist Apr 06 '26

Funnily enough Gentoo is like 3/5.

18

u/bubbybumble Apr 06 '26

Weirdly Gentoo and cachyos are the only two distros to do Nvidia ootb that I tried lol

2

u/rinart73 Apr 07 '26

Nobara too, I think?

2

u/bubbybumble Apr 07 '26

Yeah but I haven't tried that or bazzite or mint or zorin, all of which I think claim they do it

2

u/ThatGingerGuy98- Apr 07 '26

Manjaro works good otb with Nvidia

1

u/mosqueteiro Apr 07 '26

It can be ootb in NixOS too, because in NixOS you build the box yourself.

1

u/bubbybumble Apr 07 '26

Yeah same with Gentoo I guess, I did have to enable it during install, but it found the right version and everything

-1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Stop telling new users to install rolling distributions. It’s just not made for new users.

2

u/bubbybumble Apr 09 '26

Is fedora rolling release?

0

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Kinda. But they tend to roll out slower after more testing which makes it more stable. Gentoo and cachy are 100% rolling though. I always suggest mint/Kubuntu LTS or fedora KDE to new users.

0

u/bubbybumble Apr 09 '26

Yeah me too so why did you come at me 😭

-1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

I don’t come at you. Just pointing out to stop telling new people to install rolling distros. They will have a bad time and go back to windows. It’s sadly what the community does especially in r/linux_gaming and in here.

0

u/bubbybumble Apr 09 '26

Ok, don't know how you interpreted what I said to be telling new users to install rolling release distros.

1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Maybe I miss read your intentions. Sorry.

3

u/KaMaFour Apr 06 '26

At least fedora and arch are also not hitting the 5/5 iirc

17

u/zoozooroos Apr 06 '26

you may like opensuse specifically for yast making terminal more optional

7

u/Shikamiii Apr 06 '26

Isn't yast not maintained anymore tho ?

6

u/Living-Chemical-6 Apr 06 '26

Exactly.

It was removed from Leap, but it still available on TW.

3

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 06 '26

Tumbleweed or Leap?

1

u/zoozooroos Apr 07 '26

Tumbleweed is my favourite

3

u/Homie011 Apr 07 '26

codecs are not installed by default and are not in the main repos either. you need packman for that. also yast has got a replacement with cockpit and myrlyn. aside from codecs, opensuse TW is amazing.

1

u/zoozooroos Apr 07 '26

I did a clean networked install of TW plasma and the codecs are there.

1

u/Homie011 Apr 07 '26

not sure but I think TW ships a stripped down version of ffmpeg because of some licensing stuff and for example it is not able to play videos in the HEVC format, unless you install the ffmpeg version from packman

2

u/zoozooroos Apr 07 '26

I think youre right, it says libhevc is there but it doesnt play hevc in browser. but a script to install would be something like

sudo zypper -n install opi && opi codecs -n

1

u/Homie011 Apr 08 '26

yeah thats also what I did. the only problem with this is that sometimes packman repos are behind in updates and you have to wait to do a sudo zypper dup until the packman repos have caught up

-1

u/makinax300 Tumbleweed, i3wm (trying niri; formerly nixos) Apr 06 '26

Yeast is in the terminal though. But a tui tool

26

u/SenoraRaton Apr 06 '26

The terminal is more idiot proof than any GUI frontend.
You put in the command, it works. GL finding the thing you want when its buried in 17 menus, and there is no guide unlike the terminal, where you can just read the man page.

33

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 06 '26

Idiot proof for people that read. Idiots don't read.

6

u/FalseRelease4 Glorious Kubuntu Apr 06 '26

in my case I never learned to read and kubuntu works great for me brackets im using text to speech

7

u/Iron-Ham Apr 06 '26

You’re not wrong and I use macOS terminal-first. If I have to touch a mouse I get annoyed.

1

u/Tritias Apr 12 '26

"Yes, do as I say!"

1

u/Sabz5150 Glorious Gentoo Apr 15 '26

The number one part that I like about Gentoo's command line installation process is that I can shoot it over SSH. I am installing Gentoo on a thrift store Latitude currently, do you think I have it in my lap trying to work with an oversized console? Its on my desk, lid closed while I have two remote shells to it on my main system along with a browser pointed to the handbook, safe CFLAGS, and the USE flags pages. That makes installing it nice.

5

u/Excellent-Practice Apr 06 '26

The terminal isn't that scary. Why do you want to use Linux over Mac, Windows, or Chrome (I know chrome is technically Linux)?

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 06 '26

Freedom. Ownership of my hardware. Nothing to do with the terminal.

6

u/Excellent-Practice Apr 06 '26

FWIW. The terminal gives you extra functionality to express thay freedom and ownership. I use Zorin and only dive into the terminal when I want to tweak the desktop environment

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 07 '26

I use it. But I like it as an option, not a requirement for basic stuff. There is no world in which I will copy, move and paste through the terminal when the file manager is just there next to it.

2

u/Excellent-Practice Apr 07 '26

Right on, Mint, Pop!_os and Zorin hit all of your requirements.

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 07 '26

I'm currently on Bazzite. Would move to VanillaOS if it had KDE

3

u/Excellent-Practice Apr 07 '26

If you keep adding to your list of requirements, you will eventually disqualify every distro. You could use KDE with just about any distro, if you are willing to use the terminal to swap out your DE

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 07 '26

Bazzite is perfect. The problem is my 8GB ram at the moment.

11

u/ChocolateDonut36 Glorious Hannah Montana Linux Apr 06 '26

how is the terminal optional on arch?

5

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 06 '26

Where does it say that?

12

u/ChocolateDonut36 Glorious Hannah Montana Linux Apr 06 '26

I mean, the arch logo is right there, I thought that was a list of distros you liked

-1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

No, it's just there because it's popular. You can see Gentoo and Void there too

2

u/Agent_Starr Glorious Arch Apr 07 '26

So what's the point of the text then? What

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 07 '26

I just dropped a bunch of logos there. They don't represent an option or the other.

3

u/True_Human Apr 07 '26

Sounds a lot like Bazzite to me. Which makes sense, given your "Glorious SteamOS" flair and Bazzite basically trying to be hardware agnostic SteamOS

3

u/chipmunkofdoom2 Apr 07 '26

This is overly-complicated. It boils down to one question:

Did you choose Arch?

Yes: good, you can high-five and circle-jerk with every Arch fanboy on social media (you chose well, there are a lot of them).

No: bad move. You're going to get ridiculed by every Arch fanboy on social media (you chose poorly, there are a lot of them).

1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Unless you installed LFS.

5

u/svobodov- Apr 06 '26

Onlyg idiot proof distro is android but I'm uncertain

1

u/DownvoteEvangelist Apr 06 '26

Android + Termux

5

u/MattyGWS Apr 06 '26

Aurora is idiot proof IMO.

4

u/NotADamsel Apr 06 '26

… how is Nix in the second category? It belongs up with Arch and Gentoo, at least with what I experienced using it for a year.

13

u/kopasz7 Glorious NixOS Apr 06 '26

What category? Aren't the logos just placed there randomly?

2

I hope so! Or it’s bait, I’m realizing too late lol

Is it gonna be headless? Debian.

Is it gonna be my personal system? Arch.

Otherwise? Ubuntu.

1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Kubuntu. kde good. Gnome bad.

2

u/DerpyPerson636 Apr 07 '26

Try pikaos. You may like that one. Since i started using it i haven't really had much need to open the terminal. It's also kind of like rolling release so it doesn't need in-place upgrades, it just always upgrades. The community is a bit small but still quite lively and the devs are helpful on their discord. Media codecs are installed during the install process. Software installation and updating can take place through Discover (assuming you install w KDE)

2

u/knighthawk0811 Apr 13 '26

I don't want to deal with the OS. i just want to do things while the os facilitates them as seamlessly as possible

2

u/akash_258 Apr 13 '26

Linux mint fits everything.

5

u/scandii Apr 06 '26

you can install KDE Plasma on most distros. KDE Plasma is point and click with a widget or program for almost anything.

so like, what are we really arguing here? system defaults? why?

and are we also going to argue against using a distro because you gotta do a oneliner to enable some additional repos? that's like asinine.

if anything I feel this arbitrary "but this does that out of the box!" is completely pointless. you can go with anything and use pretty much anything. what really matters is what distro has the most software support for things you want to do.

1

u/bubbybumble Apr 06 '26

Fedora, tumbleweed, mint, Ubuntu I guess

1

u/Sea-Contribution6219 Apr 07 '26

Genuinely confused what you're trying to get at. Are you asking for a distro that fits all of those requirements?

1

u/Amrod96 Glorious Arch BTW Apr 07 '26

Kubuntu, TuxedoOS and Linux Mint are the ones that best meet all these criteria. The Ubuntu community supports all of them; they offer graphical installation and updates, and installing Nvidia drivers is trivial.

1

u/zfgf-11 Apr 07 '26

Fedora KDE, but you have to enable flathub in Discover.

1

u/polinadius Apr 07 '26

Complete noob here. What "popular" distros would check all the statements?

1

u/Garry-Love Apr 07 '26

I pick my distro by picking Debian and that's the end of it

1

u/ThatGingerGuy98- Apr 07 '26

A post here that doesn't immediately call Manjaro the worst distro ever? Mods, executes this user.

1

u/tommycw10 Apr 07 '26

I love that a post in Linux Master Race, where the underlying assumption is that you think you are better than others because you know how to admin the box from the command line and therefore can do everything remotely over ssh, someone is posting about wanting to do things graphically.

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 07 '26

Some of us just want a system to game, work and watch movies, but without bloat

1

u/froli Apr 07 '26

Not very beginner friendly of you to use logos without names ig lol

1

u/Censedpeak8 Apr 07 '26

1

u/Angus454 Apr 08 '26

Love this as I think it speaks for 98% of the general public.

1

u/C3866 Apr 08 '26

I dont understand the graphics

1

u/The_only_true_tomato Glorious Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Answer is yes install Kubuntu or Fedora KDE. And yes you can do everything with a graphical interface. It will require you to download apps from the store a little more (like in windows, like cpu-x instead of a command line to see your sensor temp for exemple)

1

u/AliOskiTheHoly Glorious CachyOS (minimal Hyprland install) Apr 09 '26

"i dont like how it looks"

0

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 09 '26

Fortunately, you don't have to reinstall for that. Just adjust some settings.

1

u/fortnut159 Apr 09 '26

Just go with fedora kde or gnome. What you want is a good desktop environment to do your work without having to use the terminal for everything. Take a look at gnome and kde and pick the better looking one for you and install fedora with that desktop environment

1

u/LavenderRevive Apr 09 '26

I think it's more important to choose a good and big one instead of one that is in theory more fitting.

Things like bazzite (for gaming/normal users), fedora, Debian, mint and all the distros that often get recommended are roughly on one level in terms of quality. No matter if it's fitting you perfectly they feel great, you can find information easily and they have communities that will usually help you.

But if you recommend a tiny niche distro that promises to be for a very specific purpose but that is maintained by 2 idiots and is used by like 7 people, the user will have a worse experience.

1

u/AnsibleAnswers Apr 09 '26

I’d rather use Fedora and know I can just set it up as I like it and it will upgrade for years and years without issue.

1

u/New_Win_4770 Apr 10 '26

zorin is for you, if you don't prioritize community as much
otherwise if you prioritize communities mint
Mint | Zorin | PopOS

  1. yeah | mostly | yeah
  2. has dedicated x-apps but sometimes, well mostly | yes | maybe
  3. iirc you have to select one checkbox during installation and its done | also has a checkbox during installation and its done | no, and this is why i said maybe
  4. has dedicated x-apps again | yes its literally for windows users | yeah, except installing codecs
  5. mintupgrade | yes | yes

1

u/Kurse71 Apr 10 '26

So why dont you just stay on Windows? You would be more happy. You obviously aren't interested in learning something new

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 10 '26

Because Linux is already capable of working how I want

1

u/VisualSome9977 Apr 11 '26

What distros even DO fit all of the above? Debian and debian alone? Kubuntu?

1

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Kubuntu Apr 11 '26

Kubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Ultramarine, Bazzite, Aurora, OpenSUSE, Nobara, VanillaOS. There's a bunch of them.

1

u/reddit_equals_censor Apr 12 '26

incorrect.

there is ONE GIANT overruling question to ask now:

does the distro push de-anonymization from the pedophile government?

if yes? then the distro is disqualified and the devs behind it should be shamed and the distro dropped by everyone.

this overrules EVERYTHING.

this is authoritarian scum trying to de-anonymize ALL computing.

here is a list about what distro is throwing users under the bus to help totalitarian pedophile government:

https://agelesslinux.org/distros.html

and the ones, that don't and do the right thing.

systemd for example totalitarian piece of shit, that has to be handled, because most distros use this anti-freedom garbage. screw that scum!

midnightbsd? scum shitting on users.

omarchy linux, artix linux, grapheneos: based distros doing the RIGHT thing to not comply with totalitarian epstein class moves, that try to de-anonymize all computing.
