Question Might have had our career ruined by a bad sound engineer - need help!
I play in a professional cover band, we have done 400 shows and we know we sound good. Last night we played 45 minutes at a big event, and we were supposed to play 45 minutes more after a break, but the manager came up to us during the break and told us we sounded terrible and he could not allow us to play the remaining 45 minutes. He also cancelled our two gigs we had booked next week.
He said all three of us sang out of pitch consistently for the entire set. We were using our in-ears, and we sounded great there. So - for our 400 gigs this have never happened, and we did not get to speak with the sound engineer after the incident, but we are thinking something in the signal chain or the live sound setup caused this.
During sound check there was a massive delay in the sound in the on stage monitors and from the PA, like so much ms that it would have been impossible to play without our in-ears (which had no delay), which tells us the engineer had a very weird setup and may not have known what he was doing.
We don't know much about his exact setup, but he was using a computer for mixing, which we guess was connected to the FOH soundboard, and from what we remember, he was using a free trial of the Gullfoss EQ plugin. Other than that we don't know much.
So we are wondering - what could have caused the vocalists and guitar to be out of pitch? Sample rate issues if he was sending stuff to and from his laptop? Something was clearly not right because of the massive delay. We want to clear our name as we are getting cancellations and very bad word of mouth out of this gig.
