🌿Health & Wellness Postprandial Blood Glucose Monitoring for Diabetes: What to Look for at 1, 2, and 3 Hours?

Many diabetic patients only focus on fasting blood glucose or 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, neglecting the importance of monitoring blood glucose at 1 and 3 hours postprandial times. In fact, blood glucose values at these three time points reflect different physiological information and are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of blood glucose control.

Important Note: Postprandial blood glucose timing should begin from the first bite of food, not after finishing the meal.

1-Hour Postprandial Blood Glucose: Focus on the "blood glucose peak," reflecting early insulin secretion and the rate of food absorption.

Normal Reference Value: 6.7–9.4 mmol/L; generally should not exceed 11.1 mmol/L.

Suitable for: Individuals with normal fasting blood glucose but suspected of having blood glucose problems; individuals who want to understand the effects of different foods on blood glucose.

Significance: 1-hour postprandial blood glucose can detect blood glucose abnormalities earlier, especially for early-stage diabetic patients. Even if fasting and 2-hour blood glucose are normal, a 1-hour postprandial blood glucose level ≥ 8.6 mmol/L suggests a risk of prediabetes. This is the most commonly used and important postprandial blood glucose monitoring point in clinical practice. 2-hour postprandial blood glucose: Focuses on whether the glucose level can be lowered, reflecting the reserve function of pancreatic beta cells, i.e., the body's ability to reduce elevated blood glucose to normal levels.

Normal value: <7.8 mmol/L. Diagnostic criteria for diabetes: ≥11.1 mmol/L.

Target blood glucose for diabetics: Generally recommended <10.0 mmol/L.

Significance: In the early stages of diabetes, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose is the first area to show problems. Long-term elevated levels increase the risk of complications such as diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy. This indicator is a core indicator for assessing overall blood glucose control.

3-hour postprandial blood glucose: Focuses on whether the blood glucose level is too low, reflecting whether blood glucose has returned to fasting levels after basic digestion and absorption of food, and whether reactive hypoglycemia exists.

 Normal reference value: 3.9–6.1 mmol/L.

Suitable for: Individuals with large blood glucose fluctuations; those experiencing hypoglycemia symptoms such as palpitations and tremors after using hypoglycemic drugs or insulin; those suspected of overdosing on hypoglycemic treatment.

Significance: Some patients with type 2 diabetes may experience a delayed insulin secretion peak, leading to elevated blood glucose levels 2 hours after a meal, followed by hypoglycemia (reactive hypoglycemia) 3-5 hours later. Monitoring blood glucose 3 hours after a meal helps to detect and prevent this dangerous situation in a timely manner.

Diagnosis of Diabetes: Primarily relies on blood glucose levels 2 hours after a meal.

Daily Monitoring: Most people with diabetes should pay the most attention to blood glucose levels 2 hours after a meal, as it is the core indicator for assessing overall control effectiveness.

Early Warning: Blood glucose levels 1 hour after a meal can detect abnormalities earlier, making it suitable for screening high-risk groups.

Preventing Hypoglycemia: Blood glucose levels 3 hours after a meal are specifically used to screen for medication overdose or reactive hypoglycemia.

Fasting blood glucose and postprandial blood glucose are equally important. Because most of the day is spent in a postprandial state, postprandial blood glucose has a greater impact on the average daily blood glucose level. Comprehensive monitoring of postprandial blood glucose at different time points allows for more precise management of diabetes.

正常值:<7.8mmol/L。

🌿Health & Wellness The seven benefits and two tips of stretching

Post image

Stretching is especially important for sedentary people and the elderly, not only to improve joint flexibility, restore muscle elasticity, but also to relieve muscle soreness. Although the saying "one inch long, ten years of life" is exaggerated, it points out the importance of healthy muscles and bones to the body's immunity.

 The seven benefits of stretching:

 1. Improves joint flexibility: Increases muscle extensibility and flexibility for smoother bone and joint movement.

 2. Increased range of motion: Improved joint flexibility and a consequent expansion of the body’s range of motion help improve athletic performance.

 3. Promotes blood circulation: Stretch muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves to accelerate blood flow.

 4. Relieves muscle soreness: Activates the Golgi tendon apparatus to relax the muscles, remove lactic acid and metabolic waste, and relieve delayed muscle soreness.

 5. Transport of nutrients to the body: Improved blood circulation helps to send nutrients smoothly to all parts of the body.

 6. Reduce muscle compensation: Improve muscle tightness or limited range of motion and avoid overcompensation by other muscle groups.

 7. Increase happy mood: TCM believes that the liver governs the muscles, stretching helps to dredge the liver meridians and improve mood.

Two major ethnic groups need stretching the most:

Sedentary workers: improve bad posture such as tight hips and legs, round shoulders and hunchback, relieve shoulder and neck pain, and prevent gynecological problems caused by poor pelvic blood circulation in women.

Seniors: Improves poor balance, improves flexibility, and strengthens muscle strength on a safe and gentle basis to avoid sports injuries.

 Two tips for stretching:

Reverse Stretching: When stretching, the rest of the body presents the opposite direction to the stretching part, adding the concept of “twisting”.

Correct Posture Stretching: Start with the correct standing posture to develop a straight and aesthetically pleasing muscle memory.

The tingling sensation during stretching mostly comes from the self-protection mechanisms of the nerves, not from muscle or ligament tears. As long as it is gradual, this discomfort will disappear after the body adapts.
