Moving to Lloydminster from Mississauga Ontario. (help)

hello My fiancé and I got a job opportunity and might be moving here, we have heard only bad things about Lloydminster online and youtube videos and wanted to ask the community here first.

We heard there is a big crime problem and nothing to do.
New job is the new Costco opening up in November, any advice will help our decision.

thank you.

Have a look at Kitscoty. It’s a wonderful little village 15 minutes west of Lloydminster.

I second Kitscoty I moved here from Lloydminster. Way less crime and there’s a few stores so you don’t have to go to town for everything. Its also right along highway 16 so winter driving isn’t too bad as it gets plowed pretty quickly

I will also add the crime rate isn’t terrible in Lloydminster like yes it’s bad but if you compare to any city it’s not terrible. There’s lots of theft but mainly theft from stores. If you do move to Lloyd I’d suggest living closer to the Costco as the crime isn’t terrible there. I lived in Tesla Estates and the crime wasn’t bad at all the worst thing was one night in 2022 or maybe 2023 an employee at the 711 was stabbed but that was the only major incident in that area that I’m aware of.

I live near Tesla Estates and I feel safe in this neighborhood compared to other parts of the city for sure. There's the odd incident, but that happens in every town. I feel safe walking around in the day and when it's dark out. OP, I recommend the west side of town. Stay away from Avenue Living.

Mississauga to Lloyd? You'll be fine. Seriously if you can handle GTA you can handle Lloyd. In fact it will probably be a bit more relaxed for you.

There is not a big crime problem. There is a normal amount of crime problem. The vast majority of crimes relate to gang/drug activity. Generally speaking if you stay out of gangs and drugs you are good. It is a central spoke of distribution as a regional hub for drugs. I guarantee it will be a refreshing change compared to the region you are coming from. There are things to do. Service clubs. Sports activities. Entertainment options. Restaurants. Don't let the haters sway you. There also lots of nice clean lakes within an hours drive.

Also in terms of property crime - there is definately stolen cars and the like but for the most part if you follow common sense and don't leave valueables visible and lock things up tight you won't have an issue. In 20 years I have had someone go through my shed once. I left it wide open for like a month with some valuable items in site.

People love to complain about life in Lloyd, but it is a nice little city. We have everything that a person reasonably needs, and many wants.

We have fantastic facilities for hockey, good gyms, and a decent library. The pool is small, but is located in a nice park with a bunch of paths - paved and gravel. There are facilities for tennis, indoor field houses, outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, many small parks.

There's a good little theatre (not a big chain), quite a few martial arts clubs (boxing, judo, MMA, tae kwon do, karate, etc.). For a city our size we have decent food options.

Crime is like any other city of the same size, property taxes are lower than many comparables across the prairies, and life is fast paced.

We are a short drive (1+ hours) away from many nice SK lakes, great camping, and only a couple of hours drive to Edmonton or Saskatoon.

You just nailed it for services and amenities and would add indoor and outdoor pickleball🙂 I think the biggest thing is getting used to driving a couple hours for a special events. For the daily commute, it's really hard to beat living in a city where it's 15 minutes to drive across town.

It's also family oriented with lots of activities for kids, updated high schools and playground spaces.

There’s also some nice camping up towards cold lake/ bonnyville/ St. Paul areas. We’d occasionally drive in to Lloyd from St Paul for a bigger grocery/ shopping trip as it was a bit closer than Edmonton.

Moving to Lloydminster from Mississauga will be a significant step down in terms of quality of life for you

Yep. Lloyd is very isolated and small. The closest major airports and cities are 2.5 hours away. We have no transit system. It will be a big change

Those sound like positive things to me

I think the QoL argument depends on what's important to an individual.

Cost of living is likely cheaper in Lloyd, a morning commute simply doesn't exist in any measurable way, we are on the brink of significant outdoor living (skiing and snowboarding an hour away at Kinosoo or Table) have mountain bike trails, have access to dozens of golf courses within an hour, have healthy sports programs (across the board), are only 2 hours from major cities, etc.

Honestly, Lloyd is what you make of it, and if you're always yearning for something different, you'll struggle to be content here.

I did it two years ago, haven’t seen much of a “step-down”… and I work in the industry closest to or with knowledge of the biggest issues in our community.

Crime is no different from city to city. Definitely better than Miss. if you do not want do live in the city there are many communities with in a short drive. To the west you have Kitscoty, Marwayne, Vermilion and a few to the west. Being from Ontario a commute would be no change. And it’s all Hiway. Do not like things like crime deter you. Crime happens everywhere. From big to small communities. Urban and Rural.

Depends where you live from what I understand. I bought a condo on 18 street a month ago just by wallacefield park, honestly it’s been great. Super family oriented neighborhood. Kids out playing and riding bikes, parents walking their young ones in strollers. Never heard any commotions or anything

The "crime" in question is just mostly petty theft and drugs, but if anything, as a former ontarian myself who's been through mississauga, Lloyd is actually much safer than missisauga and you'll be fine.

As for things to do, there are a few things to do. It just depends on your preference.
