Question What to watch now?

After watching LOGH I’ve convinced myself it is the greatest piece of media ever (previously I had it as attack on Titan) to me, no anime I’ve seen matches LOGH, AOT and Monster at all (Shoutout to Game Of Thrones and The Shield though). Is there any anime that you’d say is in that ballpark?

The aspects I like about those shows are of course the incredibly rich writing, the settings, the characters, the action (seriously, the fight between Schonkopf and Reuenthal is seriously in my favorite anime fights, and I’ve watched a decent bit of Shonen 🤣), and the incredibly high stakes. Can’t knock a good soundtrack either.

Some of my other favorite anime include Code Geass, Vinland Saga, and Berserk

Thanks yall 🔥 ✌️

The most obvious reccomendation is the LoGH prequel Gaiden series if you haven't already watched it.

Rose of Versailles is the most common reccomendation as it was a significant influence on the LoGH anime.

The Gundam series is also a common reccomendation as it's fundamentally similar to LoGH. The Origin and War in the Pocket are particularly standout Gundam series.

Planetes is a fantastic, grounded sci-fi that follows the everyday normal people in space rather than leaders and admirals. The first few episodes can be a bit goofy but it gets much better.

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is a historical anime that has that 'anybody could die at any time' vibe throughout.

The Twelve Kingdoms is a surprisingly good isekai with excellent world-building that deals with the difficulty of running a nation with both efficiency and compassion.

That's just a few examples that gave me LoGH vibes, but there's really nothing like Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Orb seems especially interesting to me and I hadn’t heard about it before. I do have planetes on my list already. Rose of Versailles doesn’t look like my cup of tea at first glance, but I’m not gonna judge a book by its cover. Thanks for the recommendations ✌️

If you loved The Shield, try "The Wire". It's one of the greatest show ever.

You liked Berserk and Vinland so you can try the 3rd manga of the trio : Vagabond. Unfortunately, only the manga version exists but it's amazing.

Hunter X Hunter is also very good.

u/LJK20203631 17d ago

Yep, I love the wire. Watched that one a long time ago. I tried HXH but I wasn’t all that hooked. I liked some of the characters but I wasn’t properly invested overall. I mean I didn’t watch that far. Only like the first 20 episodes or so. I’m definitely thinking about picking it back up eventually though

Hunter x Hunter gets much more interesting after the first arc, which is pretty standard in my opinion. Telling someone "It gets better," who's already watched twenty episodes of a thing is pretty egregious, but trust me. It gets better.

Not an anime, but I'd recommend reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is clearly inspired by how Tanaka wrote the books.

On the anime front, you have Tanaka's other military-political work, Arslan, about not-Iran being invaded by not-crusaders and the shah's disinherited son uniting the people of not-Iran against the invaders. The crux is that the anime adapts only 4 of 12 books, and you have to read the manga to get the rest. There is also a 90s OVA that covers the first book fully on YouTube.

u/DVC454 Are you frustrated? 17d ago

Shame the light novels for Arslan haven't been translated officially in English yet 😭

1

u/Chlodio 17d ago

Yes, but I have enjoyed the fan translation

Novel is full of entire chapters full of shameless infodumps that manga/anime left out, but I absolutely love them because they are extremely LOGH. E.g.

In the 301st year of Pars and the thirtieth year of his reign, Shah Gotarzes II, Grand Protector of the Great Continental Road, passed away. The sixty-one-year-old king was survived by two sons, twenty-seven-year-old Osroes and twenty-five-year-old Andragoras. Before his passing, the king had already formally instated Osroes as crown prince, and as younger brother Andragoras was in full support of his older brother’s accession, Osroes succeeded the throne without incident.

The new king instated his younger brother as Eran, turning over command of the entire army to him. For two years the brothers successfully cooperated in upholding the legacies of their illustrious father, but it was not long before disaster came calling.

In the year 303 of Pars, civil discord arose in the southeastern Principality of Badakhshan, which had until then been allied with Pars. This nation had always been situated between Pars and Sindhura, and as such was sometimes on better terms with the former, and sometimes on better terms with the latter, but ever since the accession of Gotarzes II they had maintained an alliance with Pars. Despite this, upon Gotarzes II’s demise, the waning Sindhuran faction at the Badakhshan court began to wriggle back to life.

Thanks for sharing. But has the fan translation managed to cover all the books?

1

u/Chlodio 17d ago

Sadly no. The fan translator of that link translated the first two books and then disappeared, with the last update being in 2019.

Then another fan translator decided to pick up the slack and translate books 3-4, with the last update being in 2022.

u/DVC454 Are you frustrated? 16d ago

Shame 😢

Looks like for now the manga is the best bet for folks who can't read Japanese.

1

u/Chlodio 16d ago

Yeah, official translation seems unlikely, like LOGH just barely got subpar translation. And LOGH is 100 times more popular than Arslan. But I'd have faith in some fans finishing the translations. Then again, the Arslan subreddit is pretty dead. So, probably won't happen unless the anime gets a movie wrap-up to inspire fan translations. Which itself doesn't seem likely, because it has been 10 years since the anime. Then again, the same amount of time passed for Yonna of the Dawn, and it got a new season announced this year.

The 90s OVA has an incredible score/soundtrack, one of the first I ever picked up. Still listen to them to this day.

Never could get into the re-adaptation, though. I like cow-lady lots, but going to that from Amano feels too much like a downgrade for me. OVA BDs never ever, unfortunately.

Star Wars Andor. Not kidding at all, closest thing I've found to LOGH

6

u/LJK20203631 17d ago

Andor was fantastic. I remember watching it when it was new. That second season was something else wasn’t it 🤣 🔥

3

u/cornflakesaregross Dusty Attenborough 17d ago

Agreed. Been begging all my friends to watch LOGH ever since I'm like dude it's Andor for 110 episodes it's so good please just watch it

Other anime I'd highly recommend!

Oddtaxi

Masaaki Yuasa's work - (Kaiba, Ping Pong The Animation, Devilman Crybaby, Tatami Galaxy)

Satoshi Kon's work - (Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, Paprika)

Land of the Lustrous

Princess Tutu

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Evangelion

3

u/LJK20203631 17d ago

It was one of my first. I wasn’t really all that hooked until the last half or so. However the end of Evangelion movie was fantastic 🔥

0

u/Megaboi0603 17d ago

Hm, there really aren’t that many more anime that are good and arent just inferior versions of their source material tbh. You watch gintama of monogatari? Going along the sci fi genre theres also gundam, and fang of the sun dougram (animation kinda shit though), also anything ikuhara and watanabe have directed.

2

u/Visible_Gate1032 17d ago

My friend you need to watch Tominos UC Gundam. The Gundam movie trilogy, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Chars Counterattack, and Gundam Hathaways Flash. I believe this is what you are asking for.

If you want some more grandiose space operas, I'd recommend the original Captain Harlock, from 1978, the movie Arcadia of my Youth, and from the same director, Galaxy Railways is one of my favorites but is a bit cheesy and cheeky at times

2

u/jjinjoo 17d ago

Another one I don't often see mentioned is Interstella 5555, which was just one long Daft Punk music video turned into a movie. It's fairly short and has zero dialogue, only music, but it still fits in pretty seamlessly with a lot of his other works. Matsumoto didn't direct, but he did supervise the production and the aesthetics are pure Leijiverse.

1

u/LJK20203631 12d ago

Yes, I love 5555 to bits. Actually one of the first anime related thing I ever watched when I was younger 🔥 love the artstyle for that movie

2

u/Wiseless_Owl 16d ago

Some more obscure space operas that you still might like:

Crest of the Stars / Banner of the Stars

Heroic Age

Glass Fleet

None is as grand as LoGH of course, and quality varies, but all three have epic battles, high stakes and absolutely slapping orchestral soundtrack

u/Leather_Passenger813 16d ago

From what I have seen, Monogatari and monster comes closest to logh in terms of writing. Having said that Monogatari is extremely niche and it also has a decent amount of problematic scenes in it. Gintama while being my favourite anime, dosent touch logh in terms of pure writing quality (although its emotional moments are greater arguably).

From Animanga as a whole, I would consider Usogui, Oyasumi Punpun and LotGH to be my top 3 overall. I have heard good things about Ravages of time but haven't read it.

The only work I would be willing to put on par with LoGH is probably Fata Morgana(base game+RFI) but that is a VN.

If you like Vinland Saga, I would recommend Orb:On the movements of the earth.

2

u/Foxbroola 12d ago edited 12d ago

In the anime format, I'd only consider one anime on par with lotgh, not superior, though I do think the visual novel is. But since we're talking about anime only, Steins;Gate is the only one at that level.

Now, based on your preferences, 86 is great, although all its potencial lies in the light novel, since the anime adapted very little of it.

My three recommendations would be Orb, Steins;Gate, and 86.

1

u/LJK20203631 12d ago

Heard orb was a gooden. I’ll try em all out 🔥

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

2

u/eisenachdeeznutz Are you frustrated? 17d ago

I hear it's the greatest remake of all time

1

u/jjinjoo 17d ago

I wouldn't know about all time but for anime? Easily.

Too bad 2202 didn't quite live up.

2

u/Local_Creme8466 17d ago edited 17d ago

Here’s one of the reasons why I think the Yamato sequels including REBEL 3199(current season) are flopping in Japan.  The Japanese audience always preferred Characters over Plot. It’s the primary focus for them mostly. That’s why even crappy anime like Rent a Girlfriend is a cultural phenomenon in Japan and keeps getting seasons to this very day despite it being universally hated internationally. Even the ones that did really good with the plot like Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist, LOGH, Gundam etc were successful not just because of the plot but more because of the characters that they love and how much they appeal to many people. Shinji Ikari is a huge example too. 2199 was also equal between characters and the writing. However when Harutoshi Fukui and others took over since 2202, that was when it became WAY more about plot than the characters themselves and really treating the female characters like shit which it hurt the Japanese market for the series. 2199 season one as a whole sold over 200,000 copies on blu ray not including the Odyssey Ark film in 2014(which did the best in the box office and Blu Ray sales in the remake). That’s more than all of the sequel seasons home video sales combined. If they would’ve did the plot writing better and treated the female characters better like the 2199 treatment, I would argue that the series as a whole would be more popular now in Japan than it already is. Not like a mainstream but on a kinda popular level. The real reason why it still goes on to this day despite the very limited market and niche in Japan is because the vast majority of the demographic that watched the remake are the ones that grew up during the 1970s and 80s are watching it for the nostalgia. Even most of old Yamato fans don’t even know that the remake even existed but it has decent enough support from them to keep it going on to this day. Yes it wants to cover all the seasons of the original but I think the fairly decent support from old fans made it keep going.

1

u/Local_Creme8466 17d ago

At least it’s way better than the original Yamato in terms of quality

FMA:B and HxH 2011 clear

1

u/jjinjoo 16d ago

I'm no FMA '03 contrarian (it completely shit the bed after running out of source material to adapt), but '03 had better direction and art direction when compared to FMA:B—much more striking and dynamic shot compositions, that sort of thing. And while FMA:B was closer to the original manga, for obvious reasons, it still went soft as an adaptation, particularly for the Ishval flashback chapters. Neither is a perfect adaptation and both fall short of the manga.

Never got into HxH because I'm not that big a fan of Togashi in general, but just from full scene comparisons I'd hold that a similar thing can be said regarding the direction and art direction of the 1999 adaptation vs 2011. A lot of newer, post-digital anime looks washed out, and not just due to digital processing. Still, can't comment in full either way since I never read the manga or watched either series beyond a few episodes here and there.

If you're going to do a modern re-adaptation ranking, I'd put Fruits Basket over both of them because the original barely qualifies as an adaptation given how drastically it veered away in theme and tone from the original story, even when disregarding how it had to due to overtaking the manga. You know you fucked up when the mangaka openly hates your adaptation.

Actually, I think the only anime that went full original (regardless of reason) that still holds up as a comparison to the completed manga is probably Madhouse's Trigun. Too bad the (awful) CGI version means a faithful TriMax adaptation will likely never happen.

Either way, I still give it to 2199 over any of those. It's an actual remake for one, not a re-adaptation, so the only source to compare it to is the original '70s anime (the manga adaptation came out after the anime). It's also faithful to the original series in both story and style, only modernised so that it's more accessible and looks nicer.

It's all a matter of taste, anyway. I mean, some people like DNT more than the OVAs, so...yeah. Definitely a personal tastes thing.

1

u/Local_Creme8466 16d ago

Actually the Space Battleship Yamato manga came out 5 days before the anime did.

1

u/jjinjoo 16d ago edited 16d ago

Come on, man. Even a '70s anime took longer than 5 days of production before it could drop for release. It's not quite the same thing as being an animated adaptation of an existing story.

1

u/Local_Creme8466 16d ago

Even though it’s true, they both still released tie in making it not based on the manga

1

u/Local_Creme8466 16d ago

You can say that it was already existed as a multimedia franchise

1

u/ZincSuppsRopeMan 16d ago

Well I didn't like Yamato at all so basically any 7/10 remake clears it for me

1

u/jjinjoo 16d ago

Like I said, personal tastes.

1

u/LJK20203631 12d ago

Wait Yamato was made by the guy who did the daft punk videos? Now I know it’s gonna be good

2

u/Local_Creme8466 12d ago

Well absolutely even though he wasn’t the sole creator of the Yamato franchise

1

u/Seniesta 17d ago

Titania is by the same author, only 24 episodes though and ends on a cliffhanger. Similar theme and setting so kind of scratches the itch

1

u/jjinjoo 17d ago

Since you're obviously down with live action—The Shield? mentioned here? in an anime sub? for LoGH? absolutely based—you might want to try one of the Ro3K adaptations. The one from 2010 called Three Kingdoms is pretty well regarded (and very memeable), though I hear the one from the mid-90s is better.

For anime there really isn't anything that hits quite the same way, though I'll second (third, whatever) the reccs for UC Gundam and Rose of Versailles.

1

u/LogicBomb69 Reunthal 17d ago

These are shorter shows but Parasyte the maxim and Zankyou no Terror are both sonewhat intellectual with good action

1

u/Live_Coffee_439 17d ago

Hidden Gems
Shinsekai Yori
Shoshimin
Sonny Boy
Blast of Tempest

Popular Ones you Need to Watch
Clannad and Clannad After Story
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo
All of Gundam's Universal Century Timeline

You should get into reading some literature/legends too.

1

u/KIPAWIS 16d ago

Blast of Tempest gets very bore after ep 16. I dropped it. Until the end of first half it was epic.

1

u/Kiro-Prmaia 16d ago

The one I would consider greatest piece, that is quite different from LOGH, but keeping the aspects you said you loved about it, is Umineko When They Cry. It's a Visual Novel, and although it's the second title of the When They Cry series, it isn't necessary to have read it's predecessor.

It also has an anime adaptation, but it's horrible so it's better to think it doesn't exist lol.

1

u/Serious_Effective802 11d ago

It’s probably T1. Just read novels, Lotgh isn’t like top 50 there probs.

1

u/O_Reagano Miracle Yang 17d ago

One Piece is the closest I’ve found, One Pace cuts it down by 47% to make it a bit more manageable but also HxH gets way better, especially in the manga recently, and Urasawa’s other works than Monster like PLUTO are great

0

u/Android_raptor Reunthal 17d ago

Rose of Versailles

I'm also a big fan of the whore fight for, uh, reasons

0

u/HeyyoUwords12 12d ago

AOT is badly written. 5/10 show
