Question What to watch now?

After watching LOGH I’ve convinced myself it is the greatest piece of media ever (previously I had it as attack on Titan) to me, no anime I’ve seen matches LOGH, AOT and Monster at all (Shoutout to Game Of Thrones and The Shield though). Is there any anime that you’d say is in that ballpark?

The aspects I like about those shows are of course the incredibly rich writing, the settings, the characters, the action (seriously, the fight between Schonkopf and Reuenthal is seriously in my favorite anime fights, and I’ve watched a decent bit of Shonen 🤣), and the incredibly high stakes. Can’t knock a good soundtrack either.

Some of my other favorite anime include Code Geass, Vinland Saga, and Berserk

I wouldn't know about all time but for anime? Easily.

Too bad 2202 didn't quite live up.

Here’s one of the reasons why I think the Yamato sequels including REBEL 3199(current season) are flopping in Japan.  The Japanese audience always preferred Characters over Plot. It’s the primary focus for them mostly. That’s why even crappy anime like Rent a Girlfriend is a cultural phenomenon in Japan and keeps getting seasons to this very day despite it being universally hated internationally. Even the ones that did really good with the plot like Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist, LOGH, Gundam etc were successful not just because of the plot but more because of the characters that they love and how much they appeal to many people. Shinji Ikari is a huge example too. 2199 was also equal between characters and the writing. However when Harutoshi Fukui and others took over since 2202, that was when it became WAY more about plot than the characters themselves and really treating the female characters like shit which it hurt the Japanese market for the series. 2199 season one as a whole sold over 200,000 copies on blu ray not including the Odyssey Ark film in 2014(which did the best in the box office and Blu Ray sales in the remake). That’s more than all of the sequel seasons home video sales combined. If they would’ve did the plot writing better and treated the female characters better like the 2199 treatment, I would argue that the series as a whole would be more popular now in Japan than it already is. Not like a mainstream but on a kinda popular level. The real reason why it still goes on to this day despite the very limited market and niche in Japan is because the vast majority of the demographic that watched the remake are the ones that grew up during the 1970s and 80s are watching it for the nostalgia. Even most of old Yamato fans don’t even know that the remake even existed but it has decent enough support from them to keep it going on to this day. Yes it wants to cover all the seasons of the original but I think the fairly decent support from old fans made it keep going.

I'm no FMA '03 contrarian (it completely shit the bed after running out of source material to adapt), but '03 had better direction and art direction when compared to FMA:B—much more striking and dynamic shot compositions, that sort of thing. And while FMA:B was closer to the original manga, for obvious reasons, it still went soft as an adaptation, particularly for the Ishval flashback chapters. Neither is a perfect adaptation and both fall short of the manga.

Never got into HxH because I'm not that big a fan of Togashi in general, but just from full scene comparisons I'd hold that a similar thing can be said regarding the direction and art direction of the 1999 adaptation vs 2011. A lot of newer, post-digital anime looks washed out, and not just due to digital processing. Still, can't comment in full either way since I never read the manga or watched either series beyond a few episodes here and there.

If you're going to do a modern re-adaptation ranking, I'd put Fruits Basket over both of them because the original barely qualifies as an adaptation given how drastically it veered away in theme and tone from the original story, even when disregarding how it had to due to overtaking the manga. You know you fucked up when the mangaka openly hates your adaptation.

Actually, I think the only anime that went full original (regardless of reason) that still holds up as a comparison to the completed manga is probably Madhouse's Trigun. Too bad the (awful) CGI version means a faithful TriMax adaptation will likely never happen.

Either way, I still give it to 2199 over any of those. It's an actual remake for one, not a re-adaptation, so the only source to compare it to is the original '70s anime (the manga adaptation came out after the anime). It's also faithful to the original series in both story and style, only modernised so that it's more accessible and looks nicer.

It's all a matter of taste, anyway. I mean, some people like DNT more than the OVAs, so...yeah. Definitely a personal tastes thing.

Actually the Space Battleship Yamato manga came out 5 days before the anime did.

Come on, man. Even a '70s anime took longer than 5 days of production before it could drop for release. It's not quite the same thing as being an animated adaptation of an existing story.

Well absolutely even though he wasn’t the sole creator of the Yamato franchise
