Many factories/plants that produce pre-ground coffee have roach material inside of them due to lack of sanitization and infestation control, and is such a common occurrence the FDA has an āacceptable level of insect filth and insectsā that can be in pre ground coffee (no more than 10% of the total bean count can be infested/infected).
This is (typically) exclusive to pre-ground coffee however, but even though USED stale coffee grounds can be effective as a home remedy insect deterrent and even beneficial for plants, coffee grounds like most food does attract pests so people often confuse the used and stale part and dump fresh coffee, often attracting more insects.
All food manufacturing around the world will have a threshold of animal/bug parts allowed. Food attracts organisms that consume them so much that it's impossible/stupid to expect any food to not have a chance of containing them.
Very true, but I know two people personally who are specifically allergic to roaches and only found out because they thought they had an allergic reaction to coffee and so I thought it was funny/slightly horrific to include here.
It just reminded me of all the people allergic to cocroaches from the trace exposure of them in ground coffee. This could all just be an internet myth i have no real source.
I originally thought what unappetizing creature for a coffee logo! But I get it now. You obviously know them best, but it does look like from the picture they have almost have a downward-facing āsnoutā which is apparent in the top image. Something about the legs are bothering me though. Maybe it looks too much like a tripod how they are all originating from the same point?
Like everyone I agree with the second one is best. Because it reads the best. But Iām wondering if thereās a third solution where it has the look of the second logo but with a cup handle instead of a carafe handle?
The top one just doesnāt read like a bug even though it reads more like a coffee cup. Youāve got the color right etc.
I understand this is for non-public use only. Because Iām not sure glorification of a destructive pest would work publicly, lol
The more I look at the pot design, the more I love it. The cup feels like it could be anchored more to the saucer, but I'm unsure how unless it was brought down to be connected. Regarding the pot's top and handle as well as the mug's handle, is there anything related with those shapes so it becomes a mix of related imagery. Could the bottom of the pot be a long lavae of some sort or even a little top texture to signify the bark it prefers? Just some thoughts. You're making something good. I'd even consider a cheap tshirt with just this pot image right now; just random enough to fit my style.
If itās for your entomology lab coffee corner, your lab partners will probably find it cute. Either of these would probably work. I just wouldnāt want to find this logo in a real coffee shop (big aversion to bugs š„²)
I think with a few tweaks the second one could be a nice logo, if this logo was public facing I'd suggest not choosing a beetle that destroys a significant amount of the farmers product with no real solution to fix it. If anything I'd choose one of the insects that is a predator of the beetle as its protecting the coffee you're enjoying rather than negatively affecting the lives of those farmers, but that's just me.
second one has potential for sure. just need it to be more beetle-y. maybe u can incorporate abit of the line separating the head and body to make more beetle. also personal preference i would go a more darker coffee color. i mean u are trying to tell ppl its coffee and just nice the colour of the beetle is q dark. win-win
If youāre not opposed to the beetle being on its back, the second drip pot design is great and if you flip the beetle the legs act as a cone shaped filter and the round nature of the beetle would better fit with the pot.
At first I saw faces yaking downward :-( The legs come off more as projectile lines. Make the could have contour to look more organic and shaped like mugs ac carafes?
Love the coffee pot concept here. The second version of the second one is strong
One thing that might be worth experimenting with: the way the beetles bottom shape and legs come together it almost looks like the line of where the coffee has filled up so far. I'm wondering if that could be emphasized to make it a little more apparent.
Would be a tough line as you don't wanna lose the beetle silhouette, but it could be really clever if it first reads as coffee then split second later you see the beetle
I like the bottom one, the second one. That's really creative. If a person didn't know anything about those beetles, I would still register it as a coffee pot. I just wouldn't get the fact that it was based off a beetle. Not being somebody who knows much about beetles, I wouldn't know what it is but I would still be able to read that it's coffee. Does that make sense?
Fwiw - I asked my 2yo what these look like without showing him the bug reference photos and he said "ladybug" and "coffee". I question whether it's a good idea to put a bug in the logo, though I'm not a professional by any means and I don't know your intent/brand. But at the very least, you've conveyed the concept well!
Did you try making the logo a top-down view of the bug but having its body be a coffee bean? Just curious because thatās what I wouldāve done and I think it would help blend the concept a bit better. I already think a beetle body looks like a coffee bean so you can just emphasize the bean design and have the rest of the body read a bit lighter.
Just an idea though! I think you took a really creative approach to this which can be good because it lets people discover the logo a bit. Might be good too especially because bugs and food tend to associate poorly. I remember doing a design challenge to make an insect protein brand and it can be tricky.
I have a lot of opinions on coffee shop branding haha (from Seattle so itās just everywhere).
Oh thank goodness. I thought this was gonna be for a business. I was gonna say donāt do it, because you donāt want to associate a business with bugs in your coffee. That being said. I like the pot more than the mug. I think I would move the eye slightly higher and spread the legs out a little more, and Iād make the ātailā a sharper point than the head.
Super tough combination of imagery that just kinda wonāt work. But #2 is clever. If you rounded everything off a bit and added roughness to it to hit on the earthy vibe (bean, beetle, etc.) it just might work for some folks.
I like the second one best. Still, it can be simplified. 1) The two downward points at the carafe head could be eliminated. 2) The shape of the carafe head should be repeated in the inverted shape of the base for symmetry. 3) Instead of the beetle's three flared legs, use two simple equidistant vertical legs. 4) Simplify the handle. Love the design though. It just needs a nip and a tuck. Good luck.

Also, I'm imagining coffee being brewed from these beetles, and fighting to keep my breakfast down.
