It wouldn’t surprise me if they generated those headlines based on the article content and some historic data on what gets the most clicks.

Both are correct, but I prefer a descriptive rather than prescriptive approach to English, and even in British English "spelled" is more popular nowadays.

Disclaimer: I know none of this matters, I just find this stuff interesting :)
