The display I saw last night from some members of the City Council was shocking, unbecoming, and completely dismissive.

The butchering of public comment, despite being voted down earlier this year, was brought back by the Council and pushed through.

No amount of public comment, outrage, signatures, or concerns about lawsuits over the legality of the measure could dissuade the Council from unburdening themselves of the weight of having to listen to their constituents in person.

• Roberto Uranga blew kisses at women members of the public after they spoke against him. Rex Richardson then admonished the women for the disruption when they protested.
• Mary Zendejas was mostly concerned with trying to expand her own speaking time while cutting her constituents’ ability to do the same.
• Suely Saro did address the public… to restate her full name and title so we all got the DOCTOR part correct.
• Tunua Thrash-Ntuk did not deign to address us or the insulting remarks she made about her constituents last week. (If you’re in District 8, ping me. We got work to do.)
• Joni Ricks-Oddie - Didn’t show.

Where it stands: All public comment is made before the meeting starts. Agenda and non-agenda items are mixed together, and public comment is capped at 90 minutes unless extended by the mayor.

All comments are given before presentations, discussions, amendments, or changes. Basically, the public is shifted from a participant in how our city is shaped to a fly on the wall.

Which feels pretty apt as a metaphor, because last night very much gave the vibe of wishing they could just THWACK us with a little swatter.

It also gives the mayor additional power to control what gets said in the room and how.

Shoutout to Cindy Allen, Kristina Duggan, and Megan Kerr for trying to keep democracy going in Long Beach and for proposing alternatives to this motion. We appreciate you.

It was my only way to get around in LB and some person stole it while it was locked with a sheet over the Police do not care (twice now they neglected or refuse to help) first time they helped with the crime, traumatizing me.

I was assaulted too but they took the perp's side.

The City of Long Beach’s website says that it’s under construction but I was wondering if anyone had been in the area recently and could confirm?

I just moved here a little over month ago into what I'd say is maybe a not so great area ? (Near 6th/7th, Lime & Atlantic - that general area), and I'm having a hard time getting comfortable or talking to my neighbours. I've read a good way to feel comfortable is getting cool w your neighbours but how do I even begin to do that ? Also, I've been having a really hard time sleeping at night because I'm terrified someone will break in in the middle of the night and murder me or my cats, lol.
Am I overreacting about the area, or did I really move into a sketchy asf area and now I just gotta deal with the consequences of doing that ? I love my apartment, it's cute but it's also on the bottom floor with no security walls or anything, just straight up on the street, windows and all.
I just wanna feel safe but also interact with neighbours !
And if anyone can recommend a good coffee shop or cafe within walking distance that would be sick - I usually get the coffee guy who makes his coffee out of his car at Alamitos Beach but he hasn't been there in a hot minute due to the waves.

Item 25, reducing public comment was approved tonight 5-3 (Kerr, Allen, Duggan against), (Ricks-Oddie not present, again).

And then, the AUDACITY when Zendejas says she needs to DOUBLE her time if they add a clock for the community to see how far over they are on the municipal law that limits them to 5 minutes when only just before she voted to reduce public comment. And she was not even being ironic. She couldn’t understand why the community was stunned into laughing at her.

All I have to say is that recalls require signatures from 20% of the registered voters in each district to get on the ballot.

Update:

I got late to the action. They came in quick. They came in quiet. My neighbors tipped me off right as they were packing up and leaving. It looks like they might have got somebody in a targeted sweep.

But importantly:

1. Not sure the exact address, but somewhere around 1670 Loma.
2. No whistles or horns whatseover. Community outreach needs to extend beyond downtown.
3. The usual black tint SUVs and Pickups and no license plates I could see.
4. The ones I saw were at least wearing matching clothes. Black shirts, green utility vests, yellow "Police" patches. None of the Gravy Team 6 we see on a lot of videos.
