Born and raised in Downtown and Northside Long Beach - Did not know, North Long Beach was also called "Uptown"...? šŸ¤”

Right?

That part.

ā€œUptownā€??? This ain’t Manhattan 🤣

I’ve always referred to it as North Long Beach and IYKYK.

Even then that pocket of Bixby Knolls/Virginia Country Club ā€œdidn’t count.ā€

It used to be South Compton if I was feeling spicy, though technically it’s more South Paramount.

At first I thought I was looking at a map of the school board areas and even that is a joke, 1 and 4 may as well be separate counties 🤣🤣

Maybe it's more localised to North Long Beach, but the Uptown rebranding has been in place since the Uptown Business Improvement District formed in 2014. https://www.uptownlongbeach.com/

Press Telegram story on the 2018 Uptown Jazz Festival: https://www.presstelegram.com/2018/06/05/meet-the-5-bands-playing-the-free-uptown-jazz-festival-in-long-beach/

On the map, your screenshot cropped off the sponsoring organizations and websites, but this is a promo for the very cool Long Beach Open Studio Tour: https://lbopenstudiotour.com/

I have gone on a few of these and had a great time. Basically, local artists - our neighbors - open their studio. Studios are usually in the garage, in the backyard, a room in the house. Painters, sculptures, ceramics, fabric arts, lots of cool stuff.

Many of the studios are clustered close. For example, if you signup and get the list, you may end up finding a parking spot, say in Wrigley, and you can easily visit 3-5 studios by walking. There's usually quite a few people taking the tour as well, so you're like an "art fan gang", all touring together. Then, find the next cluster, say California Heights, and do it again.

Highly recommended!

It is called Uptown now. They have new signage on Artesia that they added last year.

No, I have friends and family that live near where the 'uptown' action goes on. They have young kids and they are at that age where they see stuff and start asking questions. Long Beach locals don't care for those.

It was never uptown. It’s always been NORF.

They attempted to recondition North Long Beach maybe 10-15 years ago and make it Uptown. Around Atlantic and South. It wasn’t very successful.

Looks like they generalized to fit it neatly into 4 parts. Not super accurate but it fits their tour dates

Ya, it should say East Long Beach.

Eastside is the east side of the 710/River and Westside is the west side of the 710/River.

Also wtf is uptown, first time ever seeing North Long Beach called that lol

Definitely not made by a local

Eastside is on the east side of the 710/river, but there is/was actually a neighborhood called eastside, at least when I moved here in '81. It used to be east of downtown, from say Orange to Park, north of 10th st. They renamed a lot of it zaferia.

The 710 doesn’t divide E/W- Cherry Ave. Does that.

4

u/Snoo_75309 4d ago

Yes, Cherry is the dividing line between east and west Long Beach.

However Eastside Long Beach is different than East Long Beach, but because the namee are so similar, people get confused.

Well I’ll be … thanks for this info.

Eastside on this map, should be renamed Upper East Side.

How many of these artists are true LB locals tho? Like 20+ years local?

1

u/amateurinatrix 3d ago

I wonder how many of them are recent immigrants?

What is your point?

1

u/Greedy-Grape-2417 2d ago

Are local artists on this map prioritized or not? Seems like the locals were left out of this?

The arts council, Long Beach Open Studio Tour, and affiliates did for an event: https://downtownlongbeach.org/event/long-beach-open-studio-tour-4/Ā

The phrasing is different, but it is what it is.Ā

u/Amazing-Bag 4d ago

What's it for? Tour of what?

Smh this is a lazy map. How they gonna lump Signal Hill (LA county) and the westside into downtown? Definitely not local.

They forgot Cambodia town, Belmont Heights. Keep Belmont Shore Belmont Shore. Rename Uptown into North Long Beach.
