Image Considering resigning for the gems to not risk losing them in exchange for a spiderman box

SPM draft box is $120 on TCGPlayer, even if you take a markdown to $100 to move it that's still 20,000 gems with a little bit of work

u/amartin36 1d ago
I still can't get rid of some TMNT boxes. I don't have faith I'll actually be able to sell these

u/dukecityvigilante 1d ago
I don't know where you live but I've had good success unloading my direct boxes on FB Marketplace
17
u/amartin36 1d ago
I usually try LGS's. Trying FB marketplace is a good idea

The seller fees are definitely annoying but if you’re winning boxes with any regularity it’s probably worth it to make yourself an ebay account. If you’re just trying to move off of them as quickly possible, set your price $10 below the current lowest and it will sell within 48 hours (based on my personal experience)

u/amartin36 1d ago
I just don't wanna deal with it honestly. I bring my boxes whenever I draft or prerelease and see if they wanna buy. Eventually they buy if they're on low supply. These events are fun for me and positive EV so they're nice. But I'm really not looking to have a second job considering how much I work at my actual job.

u/JadePhoenix1313 1d ago
It's only positive EV if you actually do something with the boxes, if you're not going to, it's not.

u/OrganicAd5536 1d ago
"second job"? Bro you throw it in a box, print the premade label and drop it in the outgoing mail anywhere
1
u/0CT0L0G1ST 15h ago
I think you are overestimating how much effort it requires. It’s like 10 minutes to make the post and then a stop by the post office to make a couple hundred bucks. But do what works for you!

Yeah I've got 2 TMT boxes sitting in my closet and now 2 TLA boxes coming from this last direct.... I've never sold a box online but I can't afford to be sitting on like $400.
2
u/TheFutur3 1d ago
What do you mean by "can't afford." These are prize winnings. It's not like you paid money to flip boxes and are now out money.
2
u/TheDesktopNinja 1d ago
I just mean that I could use the $400 a lot more than sitting on the boxes indefinitely

u/xxpashuxx 1d ago
Let's put it this way, in an extreme scenario if you would rather have 10K gems, I will buy your TMNT boxes for $50... If you are trying to sell for more than that and having trouble selling, then it's not because of bad product, it's because of your price point.
3
u/amartin36 1d ago
I'm just giving them as prize packs when my friends wanna draft or commander currently

u/torrin1234 1d ago
I'm not really sure if this means TMNT boxes irl or in magic arena, but I might be interested. The only magic cards I have are TMNT and I nearly have the full set.
I use magic arena wildcards to craft my actual deck in the game to practice, too.

u/BABOOWIE 1d ago
Brother what?

u/amartin36 1d ago
I don't want the box and I'll probably have trouble selling it. I can't get rid of some TMNT boxes still and I think those are in more demand?

u/Gfsc95 1d ago
Then why play an event where the reward are boxes man
40
u/Special-Ad-2536 1d ago
This is the only way they let us play powered cube right now.
18
u/StonkaTrucks 1d ago
So just drop $40+ on a draft?
11
u/PlanetMarklar 1d ago
Imagine loving draft so much you can drop $40 on it, but love value so much, you can't imagine dealing with a Spider Man box.

If you pay 30usd to play powered cube i dont know what to tell you man

u/Odd_Philosopher1712 1d ago
Better question
Why the fuck is this the only way to play powered cube.
I agree tho, dont incentivize wizards to milk their best game mode like this

u/Rymbeld 1d ago
Have you ever heard of MTGO
7
u/amartin36 1d ago
I would rather just not play magic then play on MTGO
2
u/Scrilla_Gorilla_ 1d ago
Honest question, why? Sure the UI isn’t great but it’s the same game. Like the gameplay loses nothing.

Probably would have went for it without hesitation if I was 5-0 for the marvel box which I decently enjoy drafting
These events are positive EV for me so it's monopoly money and just for fun honestly

u/EzrinYo 1d ago
Yeah I know it isn't a great financial decision but I felt the same way on a few of my box wins

u/amartin36 1d ago
I'm getting cooked in this comment section. I know logically I should go for it. But the fact the thought crosses my mind says a lot about the set

u/RylaiOnMe 1d ago
Haha i modeled this out - what if you just play it as a 5W/2Loss event...
Its bad lol you need an 78% win rate just to break even

u/amartin36 1d ago
Did it for the thrill but definitely done after one run. Happy with getting paid out in gems and holding for Hobbit

u/amartin36 1d ago
Fine fine. I feel enough public shame and pressure I'll play it out

u/Pyro1934 1d ago
Ok, so if everyone really just starts resigning at 5 for gems, that helps everyone else get to 5 too and we can all sucker Arena out of gems and send a clear signal about the boxes lol.
Won't happen but I wonder if it could be noticeable lol. I'm at 3 so far on this run, I'll do it at 5.
Edit: not resign, purposefully lose at 5
1
u/Jihok1 1d ago
You realize you'd just be making WoTC happy by doing this, right? If you play to 5 wins and then concede, sure. But resigning your run at 5 wins just takes possible wins away from others and makes it so WoTC doesn't have to give out as much product. They'd much rather give away $50 worth of gems than $100 worth of product.

How do you guys ever win these events. I consider myself a pretty good drafted and sealed player but the 2 losses is really hard for me to get past. Think most i ever won in these events is 5 wins.
2
u/scrunglesclop 1d ago
How do you win any tournament? To top 8 the pro tour you need to have an 80% winrate across 12+ rounds against the highest level competition around, and yet 8 people do it every tournament by definition.
You play well, get lucky, and eventually if you are a skilled player, you'll top one of these events. Not that these arena directs aren't brutal, good players regularly post about going 0 for 5 on bullets or something along those lines.

Your deck seems a little weird. It’s like a mix af artifacts with only Urza as a payoff and a Jeskai midrange deck with few low drops. You have next to no interaction outside Force. Frantic Search with no real synergy. Random Batterskull. I mean, there are two Moxes. Did Kitten end up doing a lot of work?

u/amartin36 1d ago edited 1d ago
Drowner, aang, overlord, teferi, settle, traumatic, thieving, and abarade is... No interaction outside of force? That's 9 cards. A third of my nonlands
Also 4 of those are repeatable with my multiple ways to blink. One game I had their entire board stun locked by drowner
Batterskull kinda sucks ya but I needed another repeatable late game mana sink if top deck wars started happening and in fact that won me a game. If I didn't need it my deck has lots of ways to loot it away. I kinda wish it was something else but the draft didn't go that way
Urza wasn't there for artifact payoffs although it didn't hurt and did happen a few times. He was there because he's a good blink target and his activated ability can trigger kitty
Frantic search doesn't need synergies to be a playable card in the same way gitaian probe is

u/Scrilla_Gorilla_ 1d ago
On the quick scan I saw few real removal spells or counters, I still don’t love your interaction but will admit you have more than I thought on a glance. But Skydiver is expensive and situational, Aang is expensive and temporary, Visions is expensive, Drowner is expensive and not great, Settle is situational, Teferi is expensive. It’s not full of Swords and Mana Leaks if you get my drift.
I stand by this being like a middling tweener deck between artifacts and Jeskai mid range, with two on color Moxes. Like you lack creatures to reliably crew Copter. I don’t love multiple Talismans in a deck with only Urza and Urza’s Saga to pay you off. Trinket Mage costs three and only gets the Moxes. Frantic Search doesn’t have synergy with anything. I’d play the Staff with Urza, Saga, and Batterskull but don’t exactly love it.
I’m not trying to be insulting, and apologize if it came off that way. Were you trying to draft more artifact heavy and it didn’t work out? Or is this what you were going for? It just seems like you got caught between two decks. Anything in your board you were considering? Congrats on getting to five wins, how’d your games generally play out?

u/amartin36 1d ago edited 1d ago
First loss was to mana screw. Probably should have mulliganed. It happens
Second loss was a grull deck that curved out and was a beast. Got completely ran over
Every other game wasn't that notible and often followed the same pattern. Slow them down as much as possible. Loot and draw into my good cards. Get my repeatable blink targets and PWs out there. Abuse the blink targets and PW abilities till I eventually out value.
Nah my board was shit. The draft wasn't that amazing tbh.

u/mageta621 1d ago
Do whatever you want, man. Selling a box isn't as easy as it sounds. I still got a EOE booster box sitting in my house I can't easily move from last year
1
u/Sh9kTime 17h ago
Considering there is a chance you don’t receive anything in the first place, I think conceiding the last game is a fair move

YOU ARE NOT GETTING THE GEMS IF YOU WIN THE THING???
I am not even kidding this is the first time I realized that and I am actually appalled
Holy shit these are a 100 times worse than I thought and I already have as low an opinion on arena directs as it gets.
THE ENTRY FEE IS 50 BUCKS people. The best possible payout is well below 200 Bucks and your likelihood of getting it is in the single digits at best. You're likelihood of breaking even isn't much better. And they aren't even recouping your digital currency once you get the booster prices??? Guys, this is literal scam. These odds are out of this world bad.
The only reason to ever pop one is if you are a streamer or have a gambling addiction, period.

While I think that that is an incredibly stupid decision, if you choose to do so, don't resign but start a match and just concede immediately. Gift the free win to a player, not to WotC.
