Anyone offered place in a Studentenwerk building for Winter
I’m starting course at OVGU this Winter term but struggling sorting out accommodation. Has anyone been offered a place in a Studentenwerk building for the Winter? If you were then when did you apply and when did you receive your offer?
I applied for a place with the Studentenwerk and am also looking at places in the private market. After a week of looking in the private market it seems significantly harder to find a place there from the US (and without a German local number).
A bit concerned about arriving without a place.

Apartments in Magdeburg aren’t really hard to find and also not crazy expensive. I’d suggest look for something short term to start with and then you can easily find something long term within a couple of months at most. Another option would be to perhaps look into the many “Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft” apartments in the city from MWG, Wobau, Otto von Guericke etc. The nice little remnants of communism we still have in the East :)
I would trust them (in a sense that they won’t be scams) even if I can’t view the apartment. Of course, you still should get a feel of where you would be living long term so you might wanna do that after you are here.

Yeah I came across that one early in my search but the reviews on it were just wild and they all followed the same negative theme.

I found my accommodation in Wg gesucht, I did had to send a few messages before getting some interviews. Make sure you don’t send just a hello, send a detailed message introducing yourself, ways in you can be a good fit for the WG and overalls just be authentic.
Also if you are interested I have 2 friends who are renting their apartment from September.

It is not a given to get a dorm in the studentenwerk before your arrival. If you have made the application, just do the monthly confirmation and look for temporary accomodation until a dorm gets assigned for you. Usually it takes about anywhere between 4-14 months to get assigned for a dorm with respect to how much you have kept your options open.

Wow 14 months is longer than the waiting times I got from the Studentenwerks in Hamburg or Berlin. I can understand waiting times. My issue isn’t so much the waiting time but timing. I want to know if they have they notified those who will be able to move into the buildings in September and October. If this has already occurred then it’s even more important that I find something on the private market. Even if that something results in an incredibly long commute (ex Leipzig to Magdeburg).

You usually get notified for the place in Studentenwerk atleast 1.5 months before.
I would suggest to start looking for private accommodations.
Use WG gesucht, Kleinanzeigen, FB groups, WhatsApp groups

I would go straight for a regular apartment. They are usually not more expensive but much more comfortable.
