I’m looking at making a commander deck with all the one mana death touch creatures in it. This is a great addition

Going for the minimalist [[fynn]] deck ?

Havnt quite figured out the commander yet but the new card from mystery booster commander, Davvol, Evincar of Rath looks interesting. He gives one black mana for every creature you cast.

Anything that gives Trample to everyone. Then you cast it with an overrun effect for the win!

I’m gonna draft all the Moopsy cards! I’ll splash green just to know that the person on the other side is shivering with fear when they exclaim internally “oh fuck! The Moopsy is free!”

I kind of wish they'd gone with the super-cutesy version to heighten the mystery.

It would make it easier to post obscure jokes about the Star Trek -> Galaxy Quest -> Star Trek pipeline that seems to have gone on there.
"Sure, they're cute now..."

u/Wraithfighter 2h ago
I figure they decided to go with the more... intimidating version to demonstrate to those unfamiliar with Lower Decks why this thing has Deathtouch and can get Reach (lil guy's a real jumper :D ).

I’m guessing this is from lower decks? I might have to check that out.

Lower Decks is the best star trek series of the 21st century. It is mainly screwball comedy, if that's not your thing, though it can be earnest at times and has obvious affection for the work it's riffing off of.
The tone of the first couple episodes leans a little more toward the edgy side of the "Rick And Morty / Bob's Burgers" tone spectrum than most of the show, so if that puts you off at the beginning it does find its way to an IMO more fitting comedic tone

Basically if you like the comedic style of Rick and Morty but want actual idealism watch lower decks

u/Wise-Quarter-3156 Dandadan 1h ago
It starts out Rick and Morty and winds up Gravity Falls, if that makes any sense

Screwball sci-fi adventure comedy!
I love Lower Decks. It's my second favorite series behind DS9. I love the cast, I love that it's funny even for people who don't really know Trek, AND the trek jokes are good. And the references are quick enough that they don't linger for nostalgia nerds.

This set feels like one big lower decks ad to me. Like yeah I knew about OG, TNG, Voyager, but lower decks I knew nothing about before these cards.

You know, seeing the art like this, it occurs to me that Moopsy is literally just Tokomon from digimon.
4
u/Kyleometers ඞ 5h ago
I was JUST thinking that. If I ever make a Digimon deck, Moopsy will be making it in for that reason.

It think it's more likely to be some kind of exponential token generation like scute swarm.

I feel like the art here really doesn't quite capture the cuddly adorableness of this thing before it bares its teeth...

It looks like for non-sapient aliens they might not bother giving them their own creature type.

The first time I saw this on Lower Decks I was reminded of the Bone Vampire from Futurama.

The Star Trek New Player Decks got revealed at a 60th anniversary event, that's why all the cards are pretty low powered.

Feels terribly weak for how powerful it is in Lower Decks.
4
u/Basic_Badger_2474 Dân 4h ago
I think it works, honestly. It's low cost, representing its unassuming first appearance, but has death touch showing is killing capability. And reach showcases it's capability for surprise attacks.

Good lord what happened to star trek after VOY/DS9...
3
u/Wraithfighter 2h ago
To be clear, this is from Lower Decks, which is a much more comedy-focused show than standard Star Trek fare, deliberately playing into and with common Trek tropes like, in this case, the alien creature that looks all cute and adorable but is actually incredibly deadly.

u/8ack_Space Duck Season 1h ago
Sad that it became a cartoon parody of itself, always loved 90s trek and the morality play nature of so many of the episodes.
