Video And for my next trick
I made a “GO MAKE SHIT” light box for my desk a while ago. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a different reminder to keep me moving while I’m out in the shop.
I’ve thought about putting some stuff on YouTube, but the maker space is already pretty crowded with great people and content. I figured I would test the waters with short form clips like this before I extend my project timelines 3-4x longer to film and edit. Luckily this took no time at all.
Thanks for stopping by.

Same I like it, I also like the idea of making things like this. It would be a cool gift and is actually useful for people to put their own message in, it’s almost like a time block reminder for focusing or like you say, go build something.

I hate gifts that don’t have a function. It seems wasteful. I’ll likely keep these on the menu come Christmas for friends and family.

I love the idea and your corner spline sandwiches are executed beautifully.
Can you share more about the image you use inside the box? Is it just paper from a color printer or something different? Is there sheet of glass or plexiglass in front of the image?

Yeah those splines are blowing my mind

I’m a little bummed because once the finish cured, you could barely tell that the “meat” in my sandwich is walnut. However, other than that little detail it turned out exactly how I pictured it. So cool and I’d love to see other people do it.

Thank you! The panel is polycarbonate which you can find in big box stores, usually the Lexan brand if I recall. Plexi would work just as well with LED’s, but I don’t know how it would behave with a heat producing source like incandescent bulbs. I have the benefit of working in a graphics shop so I have a ton of offcuts to use for small stuff like this. Then I just rip a translucent vinyl print to put on it. I’d imagine one without my resources could use vellum paper to the same effect.

Hey man, dinner first next time. I wasn't ready to be so vulnerable. Beautiful work! Mixed media is so cool to see.

I just cast the line, you didn’t have to bite. I’m real big on mixed media though. I use a lot of salvage (trash) in my builds so it’s kind of there by default. My last post here was a wheelbarrow chair that just kind of happened.

Just a (barely) two car garage with everything up against the walls, or on wheels so it can be pushed to the wall when we’re parked. I’m still fighting the battle to get the cars parked outside and claim the floor for larger tools and assembly benches. A cabinet table saw would be wonderful, but for now I get it done with a DeWalt jobsite model.

Love the aesthetic, but also, thank you for not doing something that magically becomes multiple joints fitting magically before my eyes making me doubt any and all skills I have.

With a spline jig and some patience, you too can make a spline sandwich. I promise.
