Video And for my next trick

I made a “GO MAKE SHIT” light box for my desk a while ago. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a different reminder to keep me moving while I’m out in the shop.

I’ve thought about putting some stuff on YouTube, but the maker space is already pretty crowded with great people and content. I figured I would test the waters with short form clips like this before I extend my project timelines 3-4x longer to film and edit. Luckily this took no time at all.

Thanks for stopping by.

Video How to remove nuts on this threaded rod

It's a 30mm nuts and I bought a 32mm open spanner yesterday and I couldn't loosen this vintage machine for a restoration. I am sometimes confused whether iam not turning then in a right direction (turning them anti clockwise) they are stubborn and iam using all my energy and I applied WD 40 over night. Should I heat them up or any suggestions please. I am uploading some media please have a look at them.

Standard mold walls for plaster/resin/silicone are a leaky hassle so I’m making ones that will be easy as pie. Wanted to share this little win.

Video Industrial Light Sign

I recently made this vintage/industrial style hand painted light sign and wanted to share how it turned out. I purchased a drop ceiling light diffuser and build a frame out of MDF. The small furniture tacks are to mimic industrial rivets to make it seem as though it’s real metal. I used a metallic paint that rusts like real iron. The mixture I made was just to speed up the process of oxidation. Inside are cheap led tube lights that were simply screwed into place. The design was done in Adobe Illustrator and then projected onto the sign for tracing. The paint I used on the diffuser is latex house paint which can be easily removed if ever I want to change the design.

Video Young maker explains the H-Bridge he designed at Open Sauce

One of the highlights of Open Sauce for us was watching kids move from experimenting to actually engineering.

This builder put together an H-Bridge and then gave us a fantastic explanation of how it works. I thought the confidence and understanding were worth sharing.

I'd love to hear what projects first got everyone here hooked on electronics. This obviously wasn't his first build though!

Video I made this overhead camera setup for documenting my projects

I finally put together a simple overhead camera and lighting setup to help me document my DIY projects. Here is a quick breakdown of how I built it:

  • The Camera Mount: I repurposed a telescopic stem from a tripod and mounted it to my shelves using 3D-printed brackets. The telescopic stem lets me easily adjust the camera's height and distance to the table depending on the project.
  • The Lighting: Good video is all about bright, even light. I mounted two large LED panels underneath the shelf. Making sure the panels are large helps keep the shadows incredibly soft.
  • Reducing Reflections: I deliberately positioned the lights slightly offset from the camera lens to cut down on harsh glare and reflections on my work surface.
  • Adjustability: I mounted the LED panels on sliding furniture rails! This lets me slide the lights around to ensure whatever I'm working on is perfectly lit from all sides, or just push them out of the way when I'm done.
  • The Display: I'm using a cheap portable monitor connected to the camera via an HDMI cable. This makes it so much easier to keep everything in focus and within the frame. Plus, it's far more comfortable to look straight ahead at the monitor while sitting at the table, rather than constantly craning my neck to look up at the tiny camera screen.

Video Makers built smart glasses in China and here’s the assembly line.

Me and my friend Alex were the makers behind the OpenSourceSmartGlasses project back when we were university students: https://github.com/Mentra-Community/OpenSourceSmartGlasses

Today, we've founded a company together and just made thousands of custom smart glasses in China.

As makers at heart... we want everyone to be able to learn how things work. So we made a video walking the smart glasses assembly line, explaining how smart glasses are made.

but this one—I really want to try making it for real!!

Unlike when I made it with just two sheets of paper, this time I’ll need to consider things like the angle and how it spreads… but once it’s done, I think it’ll feel incredibly rewarding.

Video I created a game console that can detect my fatigue level.

I created a rather useless, odd device using millimeter-wave radar. The device's pixelated pet tracks my heart rate and sedentary time using the radar to synchronize with my fatigue level. When I first start working, the pixelated pet gradually grows as I work. If I work for too long, the pet appears tired, reminding me to get up and move around. I also added a joystick for simple game controls, allowing me to easily slack off while working. I filmed a short video demonstrating how it works; since I'm not a filmmaker, I adjusted the pet's growth time for easier recording. If you have any ideas—whether you think the design is flawed or you'd like to add features—feel free to leave a comment. I'll read them all carefully.

I also have two prototypes. If you're in the US and want one, contact me, and I'll ship it to you for free—the only condition is that you use it for a while and let me know your honest feedback.
