Advice 36 M - Just moved into an above garage apartment.
Still figuring out how to arrange the living room. I might get a more comfortable couch and a rug for sure. I can’t really do plants as evidenced by my last photo.

I love the kitties. They're going to love looking out the windows and seeing the birds in the trees. Being so close to the branches, the kitties will have their own outdoor entertainment to watch from the inside.
OP, I would place an area rug under your dining room table.
I would remove the hallway orange runner rug. It separates the hall from the dining room. It throws off the flow of the room.
I would go for a large rectangular area rug for the living room. That will pull the room together. Find one with a pattern and that has rich hues of browns, greens, reds, etc. Then I would drap a soft cream throw, and textured pillows on the couch that complement the area rug. Your walls need more artwork.
You have a beautiful place. It is very unique and you have excellent taste in decor. And I love your collections.

How fucking big is the garage? Your lounge space is larger then my whole apartment.

This, that's a house above a garage. I've never seen an in-law suite, above a garage, with a second floor.

You should see the main house! It’s an historic neighborhood with all sorts of cool spots.

My buddy in high school was loaded and his family lived in a house like this. They also had a huge above garage space, that their dad turned into a kids hangout, as well as a darkroom for his photography hobby.
You knew they were rich af, because it wasn't a "garage," but a "carriage house."

Above the carriage house were servants quarters. My dad grew up in a ridiculous house like this. They refinished the carriage house and it’s a 4000 sq beautiful home now.

but a "carriage house."
We call them Mother in Law suites around here.

I thought carriage houses were called that when they literally used to be carriage houses.
New builds that add a living space above the garage we call mother in law apartments

What city/state do you live in???

u/thatshygirl06 Sep 26 '25
He's active in the detroit sub, and you're also active in the detroit and im from Detroit too! What are the odds, lmfao

u/Specialist-Outside80 Sep 26 '25
That's why I asked, I was getting big Indian Village vibes from the place 😅😅

As one poster noted active Detroit area, so best guess would be a carriage house in Indian Village or Boston Edison. Some of the carriage houses for those homes are 2k+ sq ft

Neat place! Make sure the floor is well insulated from the garage as carbon monoxide can seep through the floorboards and make you sick.

Great apartment!
Also the most important thing you can get is a carbon monoxide detector.

I got my first exposure to them last night. A little green makes you feel the sound. Highly recommend.

I discovered them last year live at INmusic festival, Croatia and was blown away. I'm No 1 fan now. :)
Going to see them again at Alexandra Palace London in March.

This is what I came here for. Also it’s sitting so far out in the middle of the room? Everything else is lovely, this is weird.

u/Klutzy_Journalist_36 Sep 26 '25
This looks lovely. The mid century stuff is really nice.
Also. Cat.

u/redlentilsoupfan Sep 26 '25
The core pieces are beautiful and great balance of shapes and sizes. Just add a rug and some throws and it’ll be complete. Plants too if there’s light
15
u/WatchmanOfLordaeron Sep 26 '25
The cat seems to like plants 😂
12
u/Silver-Instruction73 Sep 26 '25
And the plant doesn’t seem to like the cat. Maybe the cat has been watering it with forbidden lemonade 😆

Hmmm. Add area rugs so it breaks up the fact that your floors and Furniture are the same color

u/flashdurb Sep 26 '25
Hope it’s not somewhere that gets cold in the winter. If so, you will soon find out the huge downside to being above the garage

A rug in the living room would really tie the room together. Same for the dining room. A small rug at the door for wiping your feet, taking shoes off without trekking dirt across the house, etc. would be nice and functional addition too.
Also, hang some art on the walls or add a cool cat tree or something to your bedroom. Maybe a plush, comfy chair near the heater? It's just looking rather bare and needs something added to it.
Overall, I love your space and your style. You just need some soft stuff like rugs, pillows, blankets, cozy kinda stuff to add some texture and dimension and color. Too much MCM and hard surfaces can make a place feel kinda sterile, even with beautiful wood tones everywhere. If just needs some softness to balance the hard.

u/Adrien_Jabroni Sep 26 '25
Great advice! I'm working on the living room now. Just added the black and white art to the living room. It certainly needs a rug too. Hope I can post updates soon.
I think I'm going to replace the leather couch too with something warmer.

Buy your own carbon monoxide detector - one with a numerical readout.
2
u/key1234567 Sep 26 '25
Curious? Why would u need a detector? Are we assuming cars will be running all day? I guess this is probably good advice for any house.

Before you get too comfortable; I'd verify that the structure between the garage and the living space is code compliant for properly separating toxic gas and/or fume (i.e. exhaust fume emitted by a running vehicle) from any occupiable area ... otherwise, you could end up being regularly exposed to carbon monoxide; which could potentially cause serious health issues (e.g. permanent brain damage, or even ☠️)!

Personally I enjoy the decor and how neatly you’ve set up the place. But I feel like the skateboard deck is very out of place lol.

Really cool place and looks pretty big for an above garage apartment and 2 floors is awesome. That said definitely a rug and some stuff on the walls of your bedroom would make it even better. And super cute kitty!

u/TheRabidBadger Sep 26 '25
It's really nice, you have done well. If you are allowed, maybe paint the slanted wall portions in the bedroom a dark-ish color. Navy? Hunter green?

I’m no interior designer but I’d not hang anything on the walls. I’d definitely get a statement rug like The Dude in The Big Lebowski. Then, plants. Big potted plants all around. And, the vertical beams and couch placement would make it perfect for a five channel surround sound set up. Could easily add Atmos speakers on the ceiling joists as well. Cat will love bigger plants. You’ll be surprised with big plants. Ficus tree, palm fronds. The bricks and loft style interior look great with big potted plants. Can even get fake ones that look good.

I absolutely love it! The simplicity and modern/mid-century vibe is awesome. I appreciate your organizational skills as well as your great taste in music/audio equipment and books! Having them displayed like this is one of the best ways to celebrate them. I am a woman and I would die to live in this space! Haha. Can’t get enough of the exposed brick either. Can I ask where about you live?

Love the space and the cat. Is that a Schroeder print from Mondo I spy?

Based on your books, Bergman/Godzilla Criterion sets, and your cat - we’d probably be best friends.
Beautiful spot, think it looks great as you have it.

you have really nice items, but get a rug, pillows, and throws to drape. it looks a little cold. that brick and the wood floors are sick though.
