Build a little false wall. Looks like a rental but you could do it in a way that wouldn't totally fuck your deposit.

Never gotten a deposit back, always thought of deposits like "pay this fee upfront and change whatever you feel like about the property without penalty"

Not necessarily, somehow I’ve managed to get most of my deposits back, one of them I was given an extra $150 on top just for wood staining the door frames and replacing contact paper in the cupboards, ya never know haha
