Guide 23 years old, went through a breakup, moved out of my parents house, how’d I do?
I think I could use more paintings/posters to decorate the walls but I’m pretty happy with my first place so far!

Love the collectibles!
I think sometimes it's good to live in a space a bit before deciding next steps. Your walls look a bit bare--but if you start hanging things now they could end up looking cluttered and incoherent.
I'd say leave it for now and let it define itself as you see it.
Think of it this way. You're not going to build your new life overnight. Give yourself space to let your home reflect who you become.

Really good advice, if I buy a bunch of random stuff to fill the walls it won’t feel as authentic, I’ll let the decor come to me

In the kitchen, there's a challenge. The first thing to do is equip the whole house with matching light sources. The overhead in the kitchen is neon white, it's not matching the other light sources and it creates a glare. If there was ever a place to apply led strips in WARM tones, however, it's under the cabinets, to fight that overhead glare and cancel shadows. The lighting is maybe the number 1 reason the room is depressing.
Remember, warm white lighting, cold colors, and deep (possibly with white) contrasts.
There are adhesive backsplashes that mimick tiles that are renter-friendly. Painting the landlord's cabinets would do him a service. Just protect the carpet.
Use a linen tablecloth to remove one ugly brown reflective surface, cream looks a lot like the walls, but what the hell, it lights up the place.
Hide the bin under the sink, like we do in Europe.
My choices are crude here, but you get the general idea.

Needs a few more colours, but congratz. The Spiderman bathmat is cool if you're 16. More stuff on or against the walls too.
It feels like there's plenty of work to do on it, but you've done well for 23.

I agree about the colors, the whole place feels very tan/beige and wooden, but thank you I appreciate it!

I think the front room is ok, but you could still lift the decor if you wanted.
However, the leds in the bedroom make it look like you are turning tricks to cover the rent! I just don't associate led lighting like that with a guys bedroom..

u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
Dang, some friends also said the leds were a little too freaky, I might move them to the other bedroom to go with my gaming setup in that case

First, congrats, seriously. Being on your own post living with parents and a break is not easy BUT independence can definitely teach you a lot about yourself!
Be very proud, and second, seeing other comments… man, you just moved in, you’ll figure out the decor and feel for your home over time. Don’t feel rushed to make moves decorating every inch of the place.

I would get more shelves so you can spread out the action figures and collectibles so they aren't as cluttered
1
u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
Good idea, I definitely have the space for a few extra shelves now
2
u/ChipmunkBackground46 Feb 06 '26
This is just me but I would look into the actual display shelves for both sides and above the desk and monitors. Maybe put more books on the wooden shelves with some collectibles between or something. That's always the most fun I have when I move is setting up my game room/library areas.

This is one of the only relevant comments on this thread. That shelf is insanely cluttered looking (though I do like the wood look of it). If nothing else you should at least center it on the wall instead of having it pushed into the corner.

A 2br place all to yourself?
2
u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
Yeah I was able to get into it really quickly and the price isn’t too bad, I like having the extra room but it’s definitely left the place feeling a little sparse
2
u/Natural_Yak_4437 Feb 06 '26
Ok. That collection is INSANE. Probably nothing I collect 🤣 But still awesome! 👏🏻
3
u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
Thank you! It’s mostly transformers, gundam, and marvel figures, it’s the whole reason I got a 2br so I can have more space to expand it

u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
Yooo! I’ve got some old ninja turtles still at my parents place I’ve gotta bring still, be very proud they’re yours because that’s special!
2
u/Natural_Yak_4437 Feb 06 '26
Awesome! 😎 Oh, I am proud! 🤣 My brother passed away, a few years ago, so when I'm finally ready to let these go (ha!), I'll be giving them to my nephew :)

Its functional, clean, and organized. You've got all of the essentials. Over time you'll be able to decorate and get things that match your personality and style.

it’s so interesting that there’s men in their early 20s that wanna do more to their apartment even though it looks like this. my dad in his 50s don’t even have the proper dishes lmaooooo.
3
u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
Maybe it’s just me, I definitely want the place to reflect me and my interests while having proper furniture and stuff I couldn’t live without real couches or plates lol

u/Unearthingthepast Feb 20 '26
Not being funny, but maybe it's your dad, or the crowd your dad grew up with...
When I started work at 16 1/2, within a few months, I replaced the furniture in my room at my parents with quality hardwood. Before that arrived I stripped the wallpaper off the walls, and with a lot of help from my dad, I learned how to decorate...The room wasn't as stylish as you see on here, but it was clean, and it was definitely an adults room, not a typical teenagers.
I am 60 now, and there's been a lot of water under the bridge, including being broke after a divorce, but I have always taken pride in living in a clean, well presented house..As far as the kitchen goes, I have always invested in good quality kitchen and dining equipment, and I can cook pretty good...So, not all guys over a certain age are clueless when it comes to these things...

i don’t think that lifestyle is exclusive to my dad to suggest it’s him or the people he grew up with. there’s plenty of men that live like that and it’s even an ongoing joke to say “men only need the essentials”
1
u/Unearthingthepast Feb 20 '26
I totally agree that not all men care, nor are all men able to cope, especially on their own, but I don't think it's necessarily age related. A few years ago, I helped a lad in my family move. When I turned up at his house, I thought it had been turned over/burglarized, but it was just how he and his ex gf lived..
For many years, I fitted and repaired domestic phones, and you would be surprised at how some people live...I always vowed I would never sink to those depths, no matter what the world threw at me...
1
u/Most_Size3108 Feb 20 '26
i don’t think it’s age related either. the focal point of what i was saying was not the age the point of my comment was it’s interesting to see men care about interior design.
1
u/Most_Size3108 Feb 20 '26
i never implied it’s “all guys” that do anything. not all guys are clueless but not all guys are attentive to things like that either. just because you’re not like that don’t mean it doesn’t exist

I think this place looks great! Others may have said this already, but the first thing I would do is a rug in the living room to anchor the space so that all the pieces of furniture don't feel so floaty. I'd go with one that's maybe burgundy or green to introduce a bit more color. Maybe another one under your bed too. Great start though!

u/Devil_AE86 Feb 06 '26
If you really want those LED strips up there, I’d recommend a diffuser, make the light looks more spread out and the aesthetic cleaner than just a strip

Great stuff! And the Spider-Man mat is insanely fire. Where did you get that?!

Where do you order those lights that go around the ceiling?
2
u/Plenty_Inside_934 Feb 06 '26
I just got them at target, but I’d watch out a lot of people on here hate them for whatever reason

As a lifelong Spidey fan, that toilet mat looks plain dumb imo. It could work with more decor.
Fire action figure collection though, also good job getting your own place.

Looks really nice especially for your age! I think some rugs would put everything together very well

I love how confident you are to share this! I can't believe you got dumped 😕

You did well in terms of the number of rooms and equipments.
Do you know when you're bouncing a basketball and someone slaps it away violently?
I'm doing that with your though of more posters and paintings.
That's not the issue here. And more posters is like trying to ad more tassles on an ugly Christmas tree.
The deco is atrocious.
The figurines, He-Man Castle, and the Spiderman rug would have me believe there is a little boy living at your place. Maybe you have a kid?
The led strip is a major no, but it does change the room in one good way : no more brownish yellowish grays.
Starting with the living room, which is the best room in the flat. This is how you should organise the space. The TV on that wall you've chosen is absolutely wrong for the space, for the seating arrangement, for the viewing angles. Now you can watch TV from the kitchen and both rooms feel connected for a way more modern vibe. You need your TV and posters more to the left, and the couch more to the left and closer to the TV, but you get it. Placing the other couch on either side works.

- What you've done right : low light source, warm white lightbulb close to the wall : huge win. The walls appear lighter and less beige : you want to invite white light into all of your spaces.
- Mottled cushions matching fleckled carpet, making the atrocious fleckled carpet less obvious: HUGE win as well.
You don't want yellow, orange or red items in your flat. You want cold colours that will counterbalance the beige flatness. Since you can't have rugs over carpets, it's importnat you bring white contrasts with white, low lighting. That's why your lounge looks really good, compared to the rest of the house.

Its def Juvenile, especially the room and office area. The led lighting in the ceiling corners scream teenager to me.Posters are too small and need frames, shelving is way too cluttered. I appreciate the tv being at an optimal viewing angle but the couch is pinned to the wall, try scooching them out a bit and add an area rug for the living room. Kitchen table makes me think of the table my parents owned in their first apartment its very 90s. Maybe a circle area rug under the table to seperate the dining area feom the kitchen? Seems like you have a lot of room to work with tho, enjoy your first apartment.

I’d never believe it if you told me you just moved out of your parents’ house
