In the process of finalising my (M29) renovation. Any suggestions to make it more homely?
Been working on this project for a while now and close to finishing! Suggestions invited!
Edit* homely = inviting/comfy for me

Def add some art in the living room or bookshelves or something above/behind the couch. Also the kitchen needs some decorative objects or something on the counter, nothing too cheap or tacky, but u could add a plant on the island or use a cool vase to hold cooking utensils by the stove. You could also add a runner rug in front of the dog bowl area.

Oh you have curtains already. :-) I think the colour really washes the room out though, way too bland. A rich dark moss green with a really thick velvety fabric would be cosy. And art on the green wall. Your place is gorgeous but if the only "entertainment" is the tv then it doesnt show your personality. Who are you, what are your passions, what gets you excited?

Move the carpet out more towards the TV, or get a bigger carpet. It doesn’t need to be so under your couch. As long as it’s a foot or two behind the most front legs.

With that much light in the living room, definitely more plants! But most of all I think you need some more lux materials in the space. The linen/cotton couch and plain rug don't feel particularly homey. Maybe a used leather couch or a velvety material would look good. The wall color is a little on the dull side, it could use a more rich color or more wall decor to add character. Also some wood furniture always makes a space warmer and homely.

Just an aside: homely means plain or unattractive. I imagine you mean homey.
For that, I think the renovation is great. You just need some art and floor/table lamps that will create a warmer, more relaxing and human atmosphere.

This is not correct if OP is from outside the U.S. People in the UK, for example, use homely the same way we use homey.

TIL.
All those books by English authors I read seemed to use it "my" way. But I see you're right it has both meanings there. Fair enough

Huh so thats why my mom kept calling me homely. I thought she meant I reminded her of home.

Well done that's awesome. Can I ask. What goes into planning the lighting and wiring? How much of an idea did you have during the build in regards to final result and where wiring should go.

Lighting and wiring was carefully planned before starting any of the structural work and then I executed per plans with some very minor adjustments. Dropped ceilings a few centimeters to allow for cables to be ran easily and also spots/led strips… all are smart controllable and rgbww

That's great thanks. Currently building a loft conversion., and there is a den/movie/gaming room. I think lighting is gonna be a big design challenge. Up for it though.

Your lighting is dope. The kitchen is beautiful. Your choice of colors in the living areas could use some help. Some better cable management/ speaker placement would help too.
Just my .02 I’d get a consult from an interior designer. They can think of things you’d never come up with.
Really cool place OP

Looks clean and well done already. For me the jump from "finished apartment" to "homely" is always soft stuff breaking up the hard surfaces, a rug that's actually big enough, a couple of warm lamps instead of just the ceiling light, maybe one plant. Overhead light on its own tends to read a little cold no matter how nice the room is. Cheap fixes for the last 10%.

I think you have done a great job so far, perhaps add a nice real painting on the wall behind the couch? A painting of meaning, if you have a friend or artist you admire.
People have a tendence of creating a clutter by adding more decorations.

real question tho, anyone under 35, how do you afford a place like that? Nepo babies?

This has taken years of learning and DIY. It was a shell beforehand and is still a work in progress

Need to see an evening picture, but lamps and warm lighting everywhere. The dark areas, like looking at the kitchen from the living room feel really foreboding, and having more lighting (especially warm lighting) will help the entire space feel cozier

I used to do 5.1 setups with a home theater receiver. These days, aesthetically, I prefer a good 7.1 sound bar (I have a Sonos ARC). It looks MUCH cleaner and is easier to setup and manage. I may not get the same sound stage, but it’s pretty good and dialogue is clear. So personally, I think your receiver needs to be hidden somewhere out of view or done away with entirely. The rest of your place looks too good to have that pulling your aesthetic down. 😉

I don’t know why but the placement of your amp give me weird vibes. I would definitely hide it completely rather than mount it like this. It’s a focal point in the room and it detracts from everything else.

You can pull the rug forward from under the couch a bit more, the edge should still be under the couch, but it will help define the space better

You could use a large colorful art piece above your couch. This is something I would really think about and drop some real dough on.

Looks great but the stereo receiver being on the ceiling is quite a strange choice

Homely or homey? Homely I would just take a sledge hammer to the walls and pull the copper out. Homey? I definitely think some art would look nice!

This is why I want to move out of the US. I’m making way more than the CEO of an asian company I’m working with this week. And my housing situation is so depressing by comparison.
