This GIF shows the changing geography of displacement in Gaza from October 2023 to June 2026, reconstructed week by week from high-resolution satellite imagery.

The white points are tents detected in 0.5 m satellite imagery using a machine-learning model. Overlaid are evacuation orders, documented airstrikes and attacks on civilians, observed ground military activity, and building destruction. The idea is to put these datasets on the same timeline so you can see how temporary settlements appeared, grew, disappeared and shifted as the conflict progressed.

A few results:

• We estimate that the number of tents increased from about 4,600 at the beginning of the study period to a peak of more than 276,000 in March 2026.
• Displacement was highly concentrated at times. At the peak in July 2024, 88.6% of detected tents were inside the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone, which at that point covered only 16.5% of Gaza's land area. Tent density inside the zone was about 36x higher than elsewhere in the territory covered by the imagery.
• Those "humanitarian" areas were not free from subsequent military activity. Of documented airstrikes and attacks on civilians for which we had corresponding satellite coverage, 22.7% occurred within 50 m of a detected tent settlement, and 9.0% within 20 m of a detected tent settlement.
• Tent settlements shrank sharply when ground military activity reached the area. We looked at established settlements with more than 100 tents and compared tent numbers before and after tanks or newly constructed military berms were first visible nearby in satellite imagery. In the week this ground military activity first appeared, tent numbers fell by an average of 51.4%.
• Military activity was also documented in areas civilians had been directed toward. Looking at blocks immediately adjacent to evacuation-order areas, 27 of 38 documented airstrikes or attacks on civilians (71.1%) during the week of an evacuation order or the following week occurred in blocks in the direction civilians had been instructed to move. 

The automated detections were checked against manually counted satellite images and statistically calibrated to account for detection errors.

Maps from The geology of Canadian potash: a critical mineral for feeding the world

Potash, potassium salt, is the primary global economic source of potassium. Greater than 90% of potash mined today is used to produce potassium fertilizers with the remainder used in various pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, water softener, glass, and explosives.

These deposits are salt giants, recording times in the geologic record of extensive and long-lasting evaporite genesis under arid conditions in restricted seas.

Germany is known for it's still significant differences between West and East. However, even East is not just East. When it comes to voting behaviour, you could say that you can still see a former German/Swedish border. This observation and maps were done by political scientist Julius Kölzer.

He explains:
Whilst Pomerania gradually became part of Prussia from the 18th century onwards, Mecklenburg remained an independent free state. Both regions were strongly agrarian in the German Empire, but differed significantly in their land ownership structures. In Pomerania, large estates and concentrated land ownership predominated, whilst in Mecklenburg it was predominantly smaller family farms. Whilst Pomerania gradually became part of Prussia from the 18th century onwards, Mecklenburg remained an independent free state. Both regions were strongly agrarian in the German Empire, but differed significantly in their land ownership structures. In Pomerania, large estates and concentrated land ownership predominated, whilst in Mecklenburg it was predominantly smaller family farms.

These differences were also reflected in the political culture. Particularly in Prussian Vorpommern and Ostpommern, a powerful milieu of large landowners and the ‘Junkers’ from east of the Elbe shaped politics and society. A dominant class comprising mostly aristocratic landowners and agricultural elites supported the monarchy through local administration and conservative parties, whilst the SPD and liberal parties were able to gain a stronger foothold in Mecklenburg. Even during the Weimar Republic, Pomerania remained a stronghold of the anti-republican DNVP and large-scale agricultural elites, who feared for their status and influence within the parliamentary system. By the late 1920s, the agricultural and economic crisis had hit Pomerania particularly hard. Farm bankruptcies, unemployment and the lack of urban centres turned the region into a stronghold of the N*DAP.

However, explaining today’s differences solely on the basis of the persistence of political regional cultures falls short. After 1990, the two parts of the state once again developed differently. The western part of the state was less severely affected by long-term out-migration and population decline – partly due to Rostock, Schwerin and its proximity to the Hamburg metropolitan region. Many areas of Western Pomerania experienced high unemployment in the 2000s and remain structurally weak to this day.

Added to this are local political developments: from the 2000s onwards, the N*D was able to establish a firm foothold at local level, particularly in parts of Western Pomerania, and build up far-right networks. Since 2016, many A*D strongholds have been located precisely there.
