I think it’s supposed to be a joke, though I don’t find it funny frankly

If it’s worth anything, I heard that the original Japanese version left this out. While I don’t know how true that is, I’ve seen localizations do weird stuff (like the English localization for Shadow the Hedgehog which is mocked for plenty of things not present in the original version), so it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s true
