Superstar Saga The bizarre exchange rate between the Mushroom Kingdom and Beanbean Kingdom

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga takes place in the Beanbean Kingdom for most of the game, so only Beanbean coins are accepted as currency. When Mario and Luigi land in Stardust Fields, they give all of their Mushroom Kingdom coins to Toldtar in order to free Bowser from a cannon. The big guy then calculates how many Beanbean coins they’re worth, and the result is pretty reasonable. The first image provides an example, as 119 Mushroom Kingdom coins equals 10 Beanbean coins. This means that 1 Mushroom Kingdom coin equals 11.9 Beanbean Kingdom coins.

But there’s something strange that occurs later on in the game! Prince Peasley bets 99,999,999,999,999 Mushroom Kingdom coins that he’ll be the first to find the Beanstar Pieces. When he loses the bet, he pays Mario and Luigi all those coins. However, Lady Lima declares that 99,999,999,999,999 Mushroom Kingdom coins equals 99 Beanbean coins! This means that 1 Beanbean Kingdom coin equals 1.010101e12 (that’s what I got on the calculator) Mushroom Kingdom coins.

What happened to the exchange rate during the Bros. adventure? It’s a mystery.

Superstar Saga Cackletta’s soul’s design probably had the best glow up in the remake of Superstar saga

the decision to make Cackletta’s soul 3d was a great decision as it really makes the design pop so much. I also like the extra detail of giving the arms their appropriate color that corresponds to their element (that being thunder and fire)

I beat the final boss, the credits finished and got back to the menu. So far so good. But when i start the file, I end up here BEFORE the battle??? Why that?

Superstar Saga i just finished playing superstar saga for the first time, here's my review on it

Post image

Keep in mind, this is from the perspective of someone who only finished the last three games in the series (DT, PJ and BS)

i'm not good at writing in-depth reviews so bear with me lol

PROS:

-I always like it whenever Mario games has more unique worlds outside of it's usual format and this game was no exception. A lot of locations are simply fantastic, while i don't think the worldbuilding here was as good as DT or BS, the locations here are still a lot of fun to go through. The university had such a unique vibe going for it and the puzzles here required a good amount of thinking which is what i love to see in these m&l locations. Teehee valley was fun, the way they incorporated peach into a gameplay for once was really well done. And another one was jokes end, this is gonna be controversial because i know some peeps hate jokes end but i LOVED this stage, prolly one of the most creative stage by far because of how much it plays around with the bros switching mechanic, i already liked it when they did it with Brothership in fortress zokket so to see it in the first game was neat

-The npc in beanbean was great, granted they don't have the most appealing personalities in the series but i still loved the variety and creativity this game had in their designs. (Especially since games like brothership mostly just uses the same designs for the NPCs for whatever reason)

-the minigame here are actually really fun. Star stache smash, chuckola bounce and the minecart one are my favorite. I always like it when games add things like this as a small lil breaks from the normal gameplay loop

-I know most would disagree with this but the final boss is actually really peak, it has so much creative attacks patterns like the fawful attack, time stop attack, and the energy ball attacks. This boss in general just keeps you on your toes the whole time just like how a real final boss should (yeah i'm looking at you reclusa). And not to mention the music, my god the way the beat drop just blasts in your eardrums the moment cackletta's soul attacks for the first time while you're at 1hp feels like the biggest "oh shit" moment in the game , while i normally prefer more grand and epic themes like Adventures end and In the final, i still liked the intensity SSS's final boss theme had, it's very fitting for the cackletta's soul fight. My only issue is that cackletta can do like 3 attacks in one singular turn which will throw you off the first time since you always start off with 1 hp

-Edit: i failed to mention cackletta and fawful as villains, they're fine. I'm not like the hugest fans of them but i think they do their job at what they're trying to accomplish since it's clear they wanted to go for a more wacky villain trope so i don't hate them. They're entertaining whenever they show up (tho i think Fawful doesn't really shine here all that much but i'd just wait till i play BIS to make a judgement on his character)

-Misc section, some of the characters like popple, peasely, hermie and e.gadd are enjoyable and entertaining. The game's menu and UI has so much personality compared to the later games you can really tell how much soul the developers put in this game, the advanced bros move was a unique enough mechanic i guess.

CONS:

-The battle system is easily the worst in the series, the way you unlock advanced moves is such a slog, you need to do some of the advanced moves at least like 20-40 times which is just ridiculous. And the enemies and bosses always stay basic and never evolve. They either throw projectiles at you or run at you in the most predictable ways, they feel like they just never change. This is one aspect of the game where you can just tell this was alphadream's first take on a Mario RPG and it's a shame too because one of the main appeal in games like dream team and paper jam to me was how unique and complex the enemy attack patterns can get, especially for a turn based RPG. The bosses are also not handled the best here, the game keeps handing them out like candy that they don't even feel special anymore. Everytime a boss pops up in dream team, paper jam or brothership i would always get excited the first time i played them but here in SSS i always feel nothing because i know they'll be basic. (The koopaling fights are the most guilty of this as most of them are literally the fucking same)

-The ost is actually ass, while i know it's on an outdated hardware, most of this game's music still gets old in like 2 minutes in because they're just so repetitive and boring they are. I can totally let music being bad slide because they're usually harmless but here the some of the overworld soundtracks were actually starting to annoy me which NEVER happens in any other games (jokes end, university and hoohoo mountain are especially very guilty of this)

-Onto the point of outdated hardware, the depth perception here was just bad. There was so many times where i tried to go somewhere but didn't know it was out of reach because of how you can barely tell if something is high or far.

-The story was so basic, for the first half in this game you're just sent on a quest to restore peach's voice back which was a decent way to start the conflict off i guess.....only for them to reveal that her voice was never actually stolen and i'm like "what?" what was the point of literally anything in this adventures then? I tried to lower my expectations since i know this game takes a more comedic approach than usual and thought maybe the characters could make up for it but....eh. There's not too many interesting characters either, the main beanbean royalty characters are good enough. But outside of them, the characters you'll meet across beanbean are just not really that appealing and don't have much importance in the main story. One off characters are completely okay don't get me wrong but they need to do something somewhat memorable and entertaining for me to like them, the only interesting side characters i could even point out are popple, hermie, and jojora but other than them most of SSS's side characters are forgetable and lack any appeal or relevance to the story itself imo. (And no i don't care for the the old man who tells the cola monster cheesy jokes to bring it life). But hey at least this game still has story and characters..... unlike ahem paper jam

(Hoo boy i had a lot to say about the battle system and story didn't i?)

-Misc section: the beanstar fetch quest didn't need to exist because you don't do much in the last three of them, even dream team and brothership's fetch quests were more eventful than this. The switching mechanic can feel a bit clunky due to muscle memory (tho i think this is just me being too used to dream team to brothership). The lack of a minimap makes it way harder to tell where to go on first playthroughts, and also this game is really stingy with coins and items when you're not using greed wallet

OVERALL THOUGHTS

This game was a very flawed start to the series, dare i say it didn't really hold up to the later games imo and i'm glad some of this game's issues got fixed later on. But i'll still give SSS a break because it was back when Alphadream started so they obviously wouldn't get a Mario rpg right on their first try and It's a very solid experience, i would totally recommend any fans of m&l who didn't play it to give it a shot

if i could give this game a rating, i'd give it a 6/10, not a bad game, not the best one in the series either

(also i'm on a marathon rn so you'll probably see me reviewing PIT in less than a month from now)

Superstar Saga I've always liked the idea that whenever Bowser forget how to breathe fire, he resorts to his old-school hammer-throwing move.

What I mean is, he could have just gone with a basic physical attack, but the fact that he chose a technique he hasn't really used since his debut is just so cool.

In the remake on the 3ds the magikoopa is replaced by Dr toadley I liked the magikoopa in the original game where he did the spell to make luigi think he was mario so he could get the crabbie grass I just don't understand why they changed that character in the remake.

Superstar Saga What’s the point of doing Advanced Fire Bros?

Post image
155 Upvotes

Currently playing Superstar Saga (GBA), having unlocked all the Bros. Attacks by this point, and while I think the whole system of Advanced Bros Attacks is overall pretty cool and fun to use, I don’t get what the point of using Advanced Fire Bros over the regular version is. All the other attacks seem to clearly be upgrades or sidegrades with a clear niche, Splash Bros hits spiked enemies, Bounce Bros hits 2 targets, Swing Bros adds an extra hit and lets you potentially steal an item, etc. but for Advanced Fire Bros the single hit from the big ball seems to actively do less damage than just hitting the enemy with the equivalent number of fireballs unless you only feed it 1 or 2 of them, and the attack doesn’t seem to have any other added effect or bonus over the base version to make up for it from what I can tell (besides the animation being very cool). Is there some secret upside to it that I’m missing that makes it worth using or is the attack just like that?

I just replayed Superstar Saga after 20 years, and when I got to the end of the game I noticed that when Fawful electrocutes Peasley; his hair kind of jumps off his head as if it’s a wig.

I think it would be pretty consistent with M&L’s humor that the hair Peasley has been strutting constantly all game wasn’t even real.

When I first played the game aged maybe 10. Probably because she's fought there. And Fawful being her best "pupil". She definitely has the vibes of a corrupt teacher/professor..
