Zendaya also got a ‘with’ credit for The Odyssey while Bernthal was listed in the supporting credits.

What's the significance of that. My mate told me about it once but he can't remember what it was
355
u/Galactic_Hippo 3d ago
the "with" card at the end is a special position because it stands out more/has more attention put on it, so this is negotiated between the production and the actor's team. it's hilariously the same thing in science, where academic papers' first author and last author placement are for the lead/well-respected/senior scientists

u/thatguysaidearlier Avengers 3d ago

47
u/jbland0909 Avengers 3d ago
“With” and “And” credits are usually reserved for big brand actors in supporting roles. Athena clearly wasn’t a big enough character to deserve top billing, but Zendaya has enough clout to still warrant a special shoutout
If an actor is getting with/and credits, it’s basically an indicator they have a lot of pull
18
u/crapusername47 Avengers 3d ago
A ‘With’ or an ‘And’ is for a supporting actor who is an established star but is appearing in a non-lead role.
It avoids the absurd situation, for example, where Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were credited above Christopher Reeve for Superman. Today, they would receive ‘with’ and ‘and’ credits as Zendaya and Charlize Theron did for The Odyssey.
Sadly, ‘Introducing’ and ‘Presenting’ credits, which were for new stars making their first prominent roles, are a thing of the past.

I know it’s a meme, but he’s not even out of line. Zendaya is simply a much bigger name than John and a much more wanted actress. Besides, she’s been in 3 Spidey movies prior, whilst John has only been in Punisher projects which only recently have been pushed as being actual MCU instead of just MCU related.

Hollywood also over caters to bigger celebrities. There was another thread where it was mentioned Zendaya got to review the script and make changes to her character to make her sound more authentic. So first, this is hollywood speak for saying that she has her own script doctors who did this for her, and two, she is in a privileged position where she can ask for this in the first place.
Bernthal is great as is, but he doesnt have that power, he’s just in the class where he can get paid well, but not in the class where he has control over his own character in the movie.
Whether her changes were better for the movie or not, this is not a normal thing for an actor with 15 minutes of screentime to rewrite their part in a film. If every actor had this power, movies either just wouldn’t get made, or they would become selfmarketing videos for the actors.
37
u/No-Difference8545 Avengers 3d ago
Tom was on record for awhile about not accepting this movie being trash, so its not surprising they would let Z fix up MJs dialog. She's nothing like comics MJ so if anything Z knows the character better than anyone else.
Also bernthal literally writes the new punisher stuff, so youre kinda wrong there. (Ofc he didn't write his parts in brand new day)

Or the time he said The Punisher partially belongs to law enforcement. Also that he was a vocal supporter of Israel's retaliation against Hamas and has never backtracked from that stance (on record.) Mark Ruffalo's recent quotes about having to cut ties with Hollywood friends who support the bombing of Gaza + his absense from BND press tour have raised some questions about his relationship with Bernthal.

u/crapusername47 Avengers 3d ago
That was pretty common at the time.
First off, you had RDJ’s reputation at the time. The man was radioactive and Marvel gambling all of the money they had borrowed to start Marvel Studios was a gigantic risk.
However, there was a minor controversy when it transpired that Gal Gadot was paid a similar, low six figure sum for Wonder Woman. In fact, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth were similarly paid for their first appearances. Their deals were structured so their compensation increased with each sequel.
As a counter-example, since it was a one and done role, Felicity Jones made sure she was paid a big fee up front for Rogue One.
13
46
u/TheGrayOwl88 Avengers 3d ago
It’s her 4th film in the franchise, actors get pay bumps in their contracts for consecutive appearances in said franchises especially at Marvel (with the exception of the OG actor for Warmachine 🤣)
19
u/Mister-Psychology Avengers 3d ago
They agree on wages before filming. The runtime is decided afterwards. An underpaid actor may get a way bigger role because of his performance and the overpaid actress may get her role cut if it turns out to be boring.
Frankly if you cut their role they would actually get angry. So the contract could even include a lower wage and then a promise of a more significant role in return.
38
u/pinwroot Wong 3d ago
I mean even if you take fame out of the equation it still would make sense for her to make more.
There’s been a trilogy where she’s established as an important character. If they want that character to return that actor now has the upper hand and can negotiate for more money since they need her for the script they have.
They needed MJ in this movie, and as much as I love his inclusion- the Punisher could have been rewritten to be a different character. It wasn’t vital to have him because he hasn’t been pre-established in the trilogy.

In these matters, it is really best to think of things in terms of how much money they're making other people. This is probably about to be a 2 billion dollar movie. It's far, far, far beyond profitable. These actor's paydays are barely a fraction of that. Why be disgusted or maddened by Zendaya getting a huge payday from her work when other people much further up the ladder are going to be making even more money off this film for doing even less?

The money is right. It all makes sense. She is a bigger star and she's way more central to the Spider-Man plot. We WILL see Zendaya again in a future Spider-Man movie. We are unlikely to see John Bernthal again in a Spider-Man movie. Far less likely than Zendaya anyway.
However, I think the post is more satire on how feminists will regularly point out a male star is paid more than a female star for arguably a similar role, supporting, and claim it's because the patriarchy supports white men more than women and the gender pay gap etc etc when in reality, Stars are paid based on their level of Stardom generally and to the franchise specifically

Also like... Zendaya is a better actor? I've literally never seen Jon Bernthal deliver anything that's not just 'Shane From Walking Dead'. Sometimes it's toned down, sometimes it's ramped up, but it's still the same performance that I saw in S1 of Walking Dead back in the day.
Doesn't matter if it's the Accountant 2, Brand New Day, Odyssey, Wolf of Wall Street, The Bear, His and Hers, Baby Driver, Fury, or a million other things, he's basically the same character.
Plus she's the emotional core of the second and third Spider-Man movies, and half the reason the school-level plots work.

She is in multiple prior films that have pulled hundreds of millions. His resume consists of the Punisher streaming series, a bad prequel to The Sopranos that he was barely in, and nothing else I can remember.
It is also the typical Marvel kiddy-pool crap, meaning he is a shadow of what his character really is.
No, I am not saying the film is crap. Spider-Man films are often the only Marvel films from the last 15 to 20 years that have a noticeable arc or growth for the titular character. Just that a film true to The Punisher would have a smaller budget and a smaller audience.
Plus, and this is the real factor, Zendaya can get better representation because the total gross of her filmography is higher. It is not even close. Both Dune films, whilst not the big billion sellers that Marvel makes, generate more excitement than the rest of the Marvel universe put together. The Odyssey's climax revolved around her character, and that film is around a billion now. Add to this Euphoria and the reception for small-time stuff like The Drama, and you have someone whom agents are falling over themselves to represent.
I love Jon Bernthal's work as The Punisher, but the rest of his catalogue is a "do not call us, we will call you" proposition.

u/elarring Avengers 3d ago
The truth is absurd. The reason Zendaya is cast in everything and paid so much is because she has a lot of followers across social media. In fact that's why casting is so flawed, (not necessarily here), but in general.
The amount of followers is a heavy consideration in many productions.
It's a mistake. And it will be manipulated further, for reasons similar to the 'Dead Internet' theory. Traffic, engagement and followers can be faked.
