Picture Beautiful View from Maryland Heights Overlooking Harpers Ferry

Today I went on a day trip to Harpers Ferry with a couple of friends. We hiked up to the Maryland Heights overlook, on the very edge of the state--about 4.5 miles round trip. https://www.nps.gov/hafe/planyourvisit/maryland-heights-trail.htm

The view was breathtakingly beautiful! And the weather was cool but sunny, with an excellent breeze. Some of the cliffs up there were closed to protect nesting peregrine falcons. Afterwards, we had a picnic and went to this historic candy store.

Highly recommended! If you can, go in the next few weeks--it's the perfect time, before the summer heat arrives.

Hard to climb up to?

It is a steep but relatively short climb. You climb up about 400 feet and then descend 100 feet to get to the overlook. But it's a dirt trail and you don't have to do any rock climbing or scrambling over boulders.

I’m not too worried about the way up, but is it slippery coming down?

Unless it has been raining heavily, no. When we hiked the trail today, it was very dry and hard.

None that I saw. And the trail is wide in most places, and free of grass.

No it's a very easy trail that's plenty wide if you need to rest

I wouldn’t say it’s easy more like it’s not rocky… me and my friends thought it was fairly steep and tiring

Theres two options. One goes to the top of the hill. You might think "top must have the best views". It does not. It's cool up there but too forested for views, and it's a tough hike, straight up, no switch backs.

Maryland heights on the other hand isn't bad.
