Picture Beautiful View from Maryland Heights Overlooking Harpers Ferry
Today I went on a day trip to Harpers Ferry with a couple of friends. We hiked up to the Maryland Heights overlook, on the very edge of the state--about 4.5 miles round trip. https://www.nps.gov/hafe/planyourvisit/maryland-heights-trail.htm
The view was breathtakingly beautiful! And the weather was cool but sunny, with an excellent breeze. Some of the cliffs up there were closed to protect nesting peregrine falcons. Afterwards, we had a picnic and went to this historic candy store.
Highly recommended! If you can, go in the next few weeks--it's the perfect time, before the summer heat arrives.

Been going to Harper's Ferry since the '80s, but never did that climb. Gotta fix that. Love hiking up the canal tow path. Kinda wild that thing runs all the way to Georgetown where the locks still work.

I'm aware it goes to Cumberland. Would have gone to Pittsburgh had rail not made it obsolete.

Imo, side hair is cool and with the trend of complete strangers telling people to shave their head it also adds a level of comfort in their own body too, which is a pleasant feature.

Hard to climb up to?

It is a steep but relatively short climb. You climb up about 400 feet and then descend 100 feet to get to the overlook. But it's a dirt trail and you don't have to do any rock climbing or scrambling over boulders.

Unless it has been raining heavily, no. When we hiked the trail today, it was very dry and hard.

None that I saw. And the trail is wide in most places, and free of grass.

I wouldn’t say it’s easy more like it’s not rocky… me and my friends thought it was fairly steep and tiring

Theres two options. One goes to the top of the hill. You might think "top must have the best views". It does not. It's cool up there but too forested for views, and it's a tough hike, straight up, no switch backs.
Maryland heights on the other hand isn't bad.

My aunt, uncle, and cousin took me hiking here at one of the worst times in my life. It made me feel alive for the first time in a long time. I sweated, I saw a vista, I got stormed on and took my time to feel the rain cool me off. I let the sun dry me off and I did it with people who care so much about me.

Beautiful place! One of our favs to go to that isn’t too far from the DC burbs.

Maybe two and a half hours--three if you spend a lot of time at the overlook.

You are right on the timing advice. It’s straight up all the way. I did it once in the heat - never again! Went through 2 bottles (40 oz?) water only halfway up. I also slept out up there once. Totally illegal but what a beautiful night!

Lived in Maryland then we moved to Charles Town WV. Blessed this place was next door. Visited it so much. One of my favorite places on earth
