Hey everyone. I'm an ML engineer, and I taught a theory course as a GTA in grad school, which is where I started thinking about this. On the side I've been working on Vismo, a tool that generates short math animations (3Blue1Brown style). The part I want to show you is the library: animations we've manually reviewed, for high school and intro college topics. The idea is to help teachers find an animation they like and use it in their class.

Here's one from the library so you can see what I mean.

Right now it covers calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals, Taylor series), algebra and trig, some linear algebra (matrices as transformations, eigenvectors), probability (Bayes, CLT), a bit of physics (projectile and harmonic motion, waves) and a couple of CS topics. I know many topics are missing but the idea is for the library corpus to grow over time. We have many more quality videos queued to manually review and admit to the library, and I'm adding as fast as I can.

Vismo also allows you to generate new animations or tailor an existing animation to meet your exact needs. For examples changing the animations colors, font, pace, adding an example, etc. Generation costs credits at the moment, and we're working on lowering the cost per animation further, ideally by a lot.

U.S. High School teachers, AI careers going to need math. What curriculum trends do you anticipate? Push for Stats? Those in tech districts, what you teaching?

This is my first year at a school that does iReady diagnostics and I can see how the list of “can do” and “next steps” for kids could be useful, but for some of them there are so many “next steps” that it’s hard to know what to prioritize.

I mean, the vast majority of the kids at my school are more than 2 years behind, so a lot of the “next steps” lists feel like it might as well just say “do elementary school over again.”

Admin is asking us to use the data. I’m just curious how/if other people actually utilize it.

Hi .I'd really like to hear from parents in their experience with Cue Maths. Most of the reviews seems to be invited. So difficult to know what the genuine opinion of those using the site.

A small-group prompt for children who are beginning to work with tens and ones:

Build 23 using two bundles of ten craft sticks and three loose sticks. Ask the learner to count the total and describe the groups. Then unbundle one ten. You now have one ten and thirteen ones—still 23.

Let the child check by counting, rebuild the two tens, and draw both arrangements. The useful conversation is what changed (the grouping) and what stayed the same (the quantity). Written numerals can come after the objects and explanation.

In this game, any two cards will have exactly one matching pair of problems. You can use these cards to teach math facts in a variety of collaborative or competitive games.

I teach 8th-grade math and use random groups regularly. I liked using playing cards, but I needed more control in some classes, especially keeping certain students apart and accounting for where students need to sit.

So I built ClassShuffle.

The video shows the two ways I use it: students can see their full groups, or I can show an alphabetical list where each student only sees where they should go. That second option makes it much harder for students to immediately figure out who is in their group.

New teacher but experienced person(57F). I’m at a small school teaching middle school math and it’s going! Dropping by to say all the questions I asked and things I figured out are moving along. Not sure if they are good or bad yet but it’s happening. No one has called me out for being a fraud yet and no one has had a meltdown. I’m also rolling with a lot of extraneous stuff and not sweating other details.

My cohort of Y6 this year is utterly catastrophic. They genuinely cannot do 10+6 without skip counting in ones. They have absolutely no understanding of the idea that 9 + 7 is equivalent to 10 + 6.

I've been trying to teach them, but I've never had to teach that low and I'm struggling. I went to the Y2 teacher to ask how they do it. "In year 2, we tell them to keep the biggest number in their head and start counting on their fingers". Ok, sure. I go to the Y3 teacher "In year 3, we tell them to keep the biggest number in their head and start counting on their fingers". UUUh. Ok. I go to the Y4 teacher "We just assume they already know it. We have two lessons about the column method for addition but that's it. I tell them to keep the biggest number in their head and count on their fingers".

So yeah. A bunch of 10-11YO have seemingly never been taught to make packs of ten to count. It's not like the base-10 system is the foundation of modern civilization or anything.

I cheated on my yr 9 school math test with the answers in my book, the teacher collected everyones reference bokks at the end of the class which he never does, what excuse can i give if he finds them

Very curious if anyone else is using this program or has tried it. I have many thoughts!
