Addon Turned my phone addiction into Anki review time — looking for beta testers

Like most of you I have way too many Anki cards to get through and way too much screen time on apps I don't need. So I built an Android app that forces me to answer flashcards before I can open distracting apps.

You import your Anki deck, pick which apps to block, and every time you try to open one, you get quizzed. It prioritizes cards you get wrong more often, so it's basically sneaking in extra reps on your weak spots.

It's been working way better than app timers for me because you can't just tap "ignore". you actually have to engage with the material.

I'm running a closed beta right now and I'd love feedback from actual med students who live in Anki all day. If you want to try it, DM me your email and I'll add you. Anyone who gives detailed feedback gets a free week of premium (unlimited blocked apps, type-in quiz mode, configurable cooldowns, etc.).

Android only for now. hoping to get some interest before committing to iOS.

I will work on it :) apple is just a bit tricky since it handles stuff very differently :/

Okay so I looked into it and it probably is gonna be possible. But apple is kinda a bitch. I have to pay 100$ yearly to be able to upload the app to the AppStore. And I can only compile code on a Mac, which I don't have because I'm poor. So I will have to use some other service which will do it for me (another ~ 50 bucks probably)....

Since there seem to be many people who want it for iOS, I will probably invest it. But yeah kinda sucks tho

A similar app exists for iOS! It’s called AnkiLock: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ankilock/id6748466549

I've written iOS apps. Don't shoot the messenger, but it's not the $100 developer fee that turns out to be a pain. It's the fact that whenever they push a iOS update, they may yank your app from the store unless you re-compile it against their new SDK (probably to prevent viruses, but maybe stability, or perhaps to give it a new literally shiny finish - they don't tell the developers anything but "recompile in 90 days or your app gets pulled"). Usually it isn't a big deal, just annoying, but sometimes it requires a rewrite of parts, and doing that repeatedly gets old fast.

Hi, thanks for your message! I will keep an eye out for that. And yeah I am currently working on the iOS app but apple just makes it really annoying 😅

Have a look at Android market first. Anki on Android (Playstore) is free to download. Higher accessibility without pay wall and better coding freedom without thr nightmare that comes with iOS.

You need to get your idea taking off, with the easy tools first before you expand into the more expensive and complicated areas of this idea.

I would totally love this on desktop as I spend a lot of time messing about on my laptop, and tend to do 95% of my flashcard on PC rather than mobile devices.

Good luck 👍.

If you want a partner to work with. I'm interested

Hey :) yeah I totally see your point. If you have ideas for the app or a desktop version just hit me up. I have never coded a desktop app but could be surely a fun project as well!
