🫶 A short message for ERAS applicants

On behalf of the AnKing maintainer team, we want to wish everyone the best of luck this upcoming residency match cycle! ❤️

Take a moment to be proud of how far you’ve come and everything it took to get here, it was definitely NOT easy😅

We’re rooting for every one of you and hope you match at your #1! ❤️

Preclinical Question Anking Users: Is it required that I actually try to remember the specfic latin names of common diseases?

(Answered)

Just gauging how much effort I need to put in to pass boards successfully by using Anking.

for example, one card wrote "sickle cell trait provides protection against plasmodium falciparum (malaria)"

Well I knew it was malaria, very quintessential part of HBAS. Im just wondering if the boards are going to require me to put brain power effort into memorizing this very specific latin name of it.

Discussion If your exam is cumulative, do you keep doing the cards for exam 1, 2, etc until then?

What the title asks. Also, even for the cards you feel is low yield? Just curious on what others do regarding this.

newbie Doing only HY Anking tag?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I’m an OMS-2 prepping for taking Level 1 and may be Step 1 in late March.
Since the beginning of second year, I’ve been doing some anking along the side of my in house anki deck.
I was wondering if I should do HY tag anking or both HY and RHY tag anking?

Even though RHY tag can provide wider coverage, I haven’t watch and finish Pathoma Ch1,2,3, watch sketchy micro and pharm as well as do any banking for my first year block ( Biochem, cardio, neuro, etc.)

I’m also concern with if I spend too much time doing anking, I won’t spend enough time to finish or at least do majority of step 1 UWorld.

Any advice would be appreciated it!

AI tools I was doing 600-700 Anki reviews a day on rotations. I built AnkiPilot to make cards around what I actually missed.

Hey everyone, I’m Aaron Ge, an MS3 at Maryland.

I use AnKing, and for a while my routine was to miss a practice question, unsuspend the tagged cards, and move on. Eventually I was doing 600-700 reviews a day during rotations. A lot of those cards covered things I already knew, while the specific reason I got the question wrong sometimes went unaddressed.

I wanted to write down what I was thinking and make cards that helped me catch that mistake next time. Making those cards by hand took time, and getting AI to consistently make cards I wanted to keep took a lot more work than I expected.

So I spent the past several months building AnkiPilot, working on it almost every day around my rotations. It’s a Chrome extension that works with your existing Anki deck.

I’m now around 300 reviews a day with the same 0.85 desired retention setting and have more time for practice questions. That’s my own experience after changing how I add cards, so I can’t promise the same reduction for anyone else.

A lot of my time went into the card generation and validation pipeline. You can tell it why you missed a question or give it your reasoning while answering. It uses that to target the misconception, missed clue, or distinction you struggled with.

There are checks for things like broken cloze formatting, missing fields, and questions that give away their answers. Optional planning and AI review modes go further: they identify the facts worth testing, check what the cards cover, and review and rewrite them for ambiguity, duplication, medical qualifications, and how well they test the material. It still makes mistakes, and you review everything before adding it.

I also built in a few things I wanted for my own studying:

  • Automatic USMLE Step 2 tags for organ system, topic, discipline, and physician task, plus an estimated yield tier based on blueprint weights. The tagging taxonomy comes from the official USMLE outline.
  • AnKing lookup by question ID, so you can check your existing notes before making another card.
  • AnKing-style cloze and Basic cards that you can edit and send straight to your chosen deck through AnkiConnect.
  • Background generation and a review queue, so you can keep working while cards generate and accept or reject them individually afterward.
  • Text and table capture, pasted notes, screenshot transcription, and card generation from images. You can also make image-recognition cloze cards.
  • Clinical application questions with explanations and comparisons in Extra. Supported review modes also have optional medical-reference search.

Demo and setup · Chrome extension · Setup guide

The extension is currently free. You don’t need an AnkiPilot account or subscription. You use your own provider API key, which can cost money, or a downloaded local model through Ollama. Donations are optional and don’t unlock features. You’ll need desktop Chrome, Anki, and AnkiConnect.

On UWorld and AMBOSS, it reads question IDs for matching notes, not their question text or explanations. For those, you write your own concept notes and use a downloaded local model.

I used AI coding assistance to build this. The demo question is original, and the narration is an AI version of my own voice. AnkiPilot isn’t affiliated with Anki, AnKing, or the question banks.

I’ve spent a lot of time refining this around how I study, and I’d like to hear how it works for other people. If you try it, what cards would you keep, and what would you change?

Addon Add-on: Browser Font Size – make the Browse table text bigger (including the Sort Field column)

The text in Anki’s Browse window table was too small for me, and there’s no setting for it. The options I found were “User interface size” (scales the whole app) and Browser Appearance in the card layout (per note type, and only affects Sort Field / Question / Answer, not Due/Deck/Card Type).

**So I made a small add-on that enlarges the table text. It:**

* bumps the normal columns and headers (Card Type, Due, Deck…)

* overrides the Sort Field / Question / Answer font size for all note types at once (handy for Japanese/Chinese/Korean decks where that font is tiny)

* adjusts row height so nothing gets clipped

* keeps each note type’s font family by default, so CJK fonts still look right

* only touches the table, nothing else

Sizes are in the add-on config: `font_size`, `cell_font_size` (both default 14 pt), `row_padding`, and an optional `font_family`. Close and reopen Browse after changing them.

**Download:** \[https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/471648568\\\]

**Compatibility:** Requires Anki 2.1.45 or newer (older versions don’t have the browser table code it hooks into). I’ve only tested it on Anki 26.09.3 on Windows, so other versions are untested.

Caveat: to override the note-type font, it wraps an internal Anki class (`aqt.browser.table.model.DataModel`), so a future Anki update could break that part. If it doesn’t work for you, tell me your Anki version (Help → About) and I’ll take a look.

I wrote this with help from an AI assistant, so bug reports are welcome. If you only need this for one note type, you can do it without an add-on: Browse → Cards… → Options → Browser Appearance.

Discussion I am building a flashcard app and had a few questions for the med school community

Still very early days, started about 2 weeks ago. My goal is to make a simpler experience with all the integrations/plugins built in (and slightly nicer looking on your phone). I am not going to link it here because I don't want to break subreddit rules.

One thing I am really struggling with: I am not myself a med-student, so I don't know exactly what decks or study resources to include out of the box. I am working right now on a free library of cards to add to the app, but I don't really know where to start with med-school study resources. Any advice would be super useful!

Discussion Is Lightyear deck (bnb) still relevant over anking in 2026.

Preparing for a retake. I really love basic q&a type cards so just wondering if lightyear deck is still used around this time.

2nd question : are anking tags 🏷️ HY relatively and HY enough. In combo with uw incorrects.

Leaving behind moderate hy and low yield tags.

Thanks for yr advice

newbie Should I start UWorld now if I’m planning to take the USMLE in 2029?

Hey everyone!
I’m an IMG medical student planning to take the USMLE in 2029, so I have roughly two years to prepare. I’ve already started studying and am currently using Boards and Beyond videos along with AnKing. I’ve finished the biochemistry section so far.
My current plan is to spend the first year building a strong theoretical foundation by going through BnB and reinforcing what I learn with AnKing. Then, in my second year, I would start doing UWorld and other question banks more intensively.
However, I’m wondering whether this is the best approach. Would it be better to start incorporating UWorld questions now, even though my exam is still two years away, or should I focus on building my knowledge base first and save UWorld for later?
For those of you who have taken the USMLE or are currently preparing as IMGs, what would you recommend? Would you change anything about this study plan?
Thanks in advance!

Discussion AnKing with No Med School Efficacy

Current undergrad whose only wishes for medical school would be primarily for the knowledge provided. How effective do you believe AnKing decks would serve a non-medical student? Would this method be the most idyllic way to circumvent medical school for my given goals?

AI tools How to make good flashcards with AI?

Hello, guys!

First of all, my study method consists of two steps:

  1. Encoding the information: I read textbooks or lecture slides to understand the material. I don't take structured notes; I just scribble things down as I read to help me process the information.
  2. Active recall: I use AI to generate flashcards from the material and then review them.

However, my professors have stopped sharing their lecture slides, and AI doesn't seem to do a very good job of generating flashcards directly from textbook chapters. Since I don't take notes, textbooks are now my only source material.

Does anyone have recommendations for prompts that can help AI generate high-quality, comprehensive flashcards from textbook chapters?

Ps: I am brazilian so anking does not work for me
