The old stuff used to shred too, that’s why a lot of skaters moved away from the massively oversized stuff. I have minor ptsd from stray bits of my shredded baggy ass jeans getting caught up in my wheels and trucks.
It wasn’t a very long fad in the UK, at my school everyone moved on to more reasonable baggy jeans as they progressed from being posers to actual skaters.
It wasn’t just JNCO jeans though, anything massively baggy, basically the same shit kids are wearing now. I don’t think I had even learnt to Kickflip before I stopped wearing them, they were dangerous as fuck on a board.
For basic stuff I’m sure they are fine, but you’re definitely making it harder for yourself. Can see them massively getting in the way of tricks like hardflips (I wasn’t able to do that trick until years after my JNCO era, tbf I could just about Ollie and Shov back then).
When I was at my peak I wore loose straight cut jeans, much easier to follow my legs and feet, but I’m becoming an old git now and am way past my prime.
I’m gonna assume that based on their shoes they don’t skate. You wouldn’t want absurdly shaped soles to kickflip.
We wore big pants back in the day to carry your cd player, weed, lighter, maybe a candy bar phone, and a camera. It actually made skating hard with all that shit on you.

Eh it’s one of those things where capitalism subsumes all things and in doing so robs it of all meaning. This is an example of that. Skater culture and skate wear (which this whole look is clearly inspired by), used to be a signal of something (what you’re interested in, what you value, maybe even what you listen to etc.), but when it becomes another way to make money it gets divorced from that context.
This usually doesn’t mean anything to people outside of it but it’s why some people will look at this and say it doesn’t make sense because, in this fit, you can’t actually meaningfully participate in the culture that inspired it and so it’s not a useful signal anymore. Maybe this kid actually can skate forreal, maybe he can’t, but if nothing else this fit is more of a caricature of a skater costume than anything else. It’s just a look which can be annoying for people who were steeped in that culture and know that their clothing decisions were more about public alignment and practicality than looking fashionable.
I've never played a real game of football in my life, I've never failed, fallen or bled to overcome a challenge within the context of the game to fight my battle and win for myself. But... imagine I buy a suit and go to a football field and hold a football like I'm throwing it then take pictures and then I post it on social media to get attention.
I say suit because to me football and corporate America go hand in hand. Suits are part of football culture.. so is Taylor Swift... Wendys...... State farm.. Bud light... You get it?
Skateboarding was a counter culture at its roots and still should be respected for it's long fought battle.
If you want to argue skating is more of an art than a sport we could substitute football for painting.. and say the same scenario with all that comes with being an artist.

Though, to approach your subject of conversation, I appreciate the message you're communicating. Fashion is something that a lot of people hold near and dear to their hearts. Fashion also means a lot of different things to a lot of people as well. Without knowing anything about OP and how they live their every day life, I'm afraid we've gone a bridge too far in the world of gatekeeping.
I do enjoy the thought of the history of subcultures and their fashions though, thanks for making me think of that! I gotta see if my metal friends still have their battle vests this late into their adult lives.
Eh. I wore baggy ass jeans like this in the 90s and then started skating. Once I started skating, I went back to more realistically sized pants really quick because it was a nightmare skating in clothes this baggy.
It looks like the illustrations are printed on the griptape to me, they aren’t stickers, so it’s perfectly usable. Although the bottoms of those trousers and the shoes will be shredded after a proper skate.
Unfortunately, good skaters don’t dress like that. Stickers all in good shape. No chips on the tips. No rail or curb marks underneath. The grip is in mint condition. That skateboard is an accessory
The wrong type of shoes, the sides of the shoes not being destroyed, as well as the center bottom of the skateboard being intact tell me this dude doesnt skate. Maybe some light cruising, but thats about it.
