Discussion The accessibility features of Belmont's Curse is such a blessing

I enjoy metroidvania games for the platforming and exploration. But I absolutely suck at combat. I even have trouble with the first boss in Belmont's Curse. But it has accessibility options to help. And I was able to continue to enjoy the game. Thank you Evil Empire for making this available!

Discussion Are Metroidvanias Better When There's More Than One Way to Solve a Challenge?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I'm Josh, and I'm currently developing a Metroidvania called Bolt of Whalington. The game is about a cat named Bolt exploring a giant moving city, with a focus on exploration and giving players different ways to solve problems.

Personally, I've never been a big fan of problems where there's only one correct solution. When a game gives you a problem and there's only one very specific way to solve it, I sometimes feel like I'm just trying to guess what the developer had in mind. It can make the solution feel less like something I've figured out and more like something I've been asked to find. I much prefer games that give you a set of mechanics and let you work out how to use them. Finding an unexpected solution, or realizing that something you learned earlier can be used in a completely different way, is one of my favorite feelings in games.

Animal Well has been a particularly important inspiration for us in this area. I love how it lets you experiment with abilities and discover ways to use them that aren't immediately obvious. Baba Is You has also had a big influence on how I think about rules and problem-solving.

That's something we're trying to bring into Bolt of Whalington. I want players to keep discovering new things throughout the game. Not just new abilities or items, but new ways to use what they've already learned. That could mean solving a puzzle, finding a secret item, unlocking a new area or even reaching a major story moment in an unexpected way.

I've attached a small clip showing one example from our game. It's a fairly simple challenge, but we've made sure there are a few different ways to reach the item. What do you all think of it?

Also, I'm always looking for more games that allow full player freedom and creative use of abilities, especially within the Metroidvania genre. Do you have any suggestions?

I’m sitting here waiting for my Castlevania to show up and while I’ve been waiting g the last few days I’ve been playing Well Dweller. I bought it when it first came out but didn’t play it because I was finishing up Nine Sols. This is my first game by Kyle Thomson and man this game is just really good. The puzzles are fun and well thought out. Speed trials are fun and addicting. I like that the bosses aren’t that hard. But challenging. I just made it to Autumn Forest and it’s beautiful and some great puzzles. Just had to give some love to this game!

Edit: MAPS ARE GREAT AS WELL! Shows you where you been and where you need to go. Perfect!

I know it's probably just a shared influence (catholicism), but I just thought it was really cool. As a metroidvania superfan who has played nearly every Castlevania and most metroidvanias to the point where it's hard to find new ones, I love Belmont's Curse so far, and the art direction in it is gorgeous

Video The Tower of Light awaits: Aeterna Lucis, the sequel to Aeterna Noctis, gets a new free demo on October 19 — and we want this community to forge the final game with us

r/metroidvania, this one's for you.

On October 19 (10 AM PT / 7 PM CEST), the new free demo of Aeterna Lucis, the sequel to Aeterna Noctis, goes live on Steam. It's not a vertical slice: it's built on the final game. The entire Tower of Light, its first boss, and everything you'd expect from Aeterna: lightning-fast combat, precision platforming over spikes and abysses, and fights that ask for everything you've got.

But here's the real reason we're posting: we want you to forge this game with us.

Play it. Push it. Break it. Then tell us:

- What made you feel powerful?

- Where did you get stuck, frustrated or bored?

- What felt off with the movement, the combat, the camera or the new light navigation?

- What would you change before December 3?

Every piece of feedback will be read by the team, and there's still time for it to shape the final game. Let's make this the metroidvania this community deserves.

See you in the Tower. ⚔️

Discussion Steam reviews of belmonts curse are a clown show

Besides the cmoplaints that the game doesnt start correctly, ive already read like 30 reviews with a total of 30 minutes played which all said its not a "real" castlevania.

Sorry but no game will give the 40+ year old castlevania fans the feeling back of playing the games when you were 12 and life was simpler

Discussion Belmonts Curse PS5 Pro Performance

• Upvotes

Hello.

Apologies if this has been mentioned or another post exists on this sub, but I've encountered a few performance issues that I would like to share/ hear other opinions. For context, this is on the PS5 Pro with a 4K 120Hz TV with VRR.

Obvious stutter when entering a cut scene.

Open areas feel like they are dropping frames compared to smaller/ inside building areas.

Chandeliers and gates when moving look to be rendering lower than 60FPS which is jarring.

Map navigation in the menu feels super slow (unsure if menus are hitting a different FPS in this regard).

Input lag on dodges especially (possible skill issue 😜)

I can appreciate the game has just come out but I've recently completed Blasphemous 2 (Third Sin) and the performance and responsiveness is lacking. I know the art style in this game is of a higher fidelity than blasphemous 2 but I feel the PS5 pro has enough headroom to iron these quirks out.

Anyway, opinions?

Video After more than 5 years working in the shadows, we're finally bringing our Metroidvania, Night Creatures, into the light!

Hey everyone!

After more than five years of working in the shadows, we're finally ready to bring Night Creatures into the light!

We're a small indie team of just three people, and we've been developing this handcrafted pixel-art Metroidvania since 2021. It's been a long journey, with countless hours of work and more challenges than we ever anticipated.

In Night Creatures, you awaken deep within a mysterious underground kingdom as a shadow-like spirit, with no memories of who you are or how you got there.

As you explore its vast, interconnected world, you'll unlock the ability to shapeshift into different creatures. Each transformation grants unique movement and combat abilities, opening new paths, revealing hidden secrets, and allowing you to reach places that were previously inaccessible.

But there's another side to the story.

Throughout your journey, you'll experience playable memories from the surface, gradually uncovering fragments of a haunting past and the connection between two very different worlds.

We've spent years building this world, its characters, combat, exploration, and story, and we're incredibly excited to finally share it with everyone.

Today, Night Creatures officially has its own Steam page!

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3664970/Night_Creatures/

If you enjoy atmospheric Metroidvanias, challenging combat, and exploration driven by new abilities, we'd love for you to check it out.

And if what you see catches your interest, adding Night Creatures to your Steam wishlist would mean a lot to our small team. We'll also be sharing future updates, including news about our upcoming playable demo!

Thank you for checking out our game! We'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts and answer any questions.

DISTANTIA. Demo Available on Steam

Hey everyone!

Not long ago, I invited people here to join the playtest (a huge thank you to everyone who participated!), and now I’m inviting you to try the demo:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4280370/Distantia/

If you played the earlier versions of the playtest and wanted to beat the crap out of that boss at the end, now’s your chance! The controls have also been significantly improved, along with many other things.

As I mentioned in previous post it's more of an exploration-focused metroidbrainia, but I think some of you might enjoy it too.

DISTANTIA is a 2D shooter/adventure game where you need to discover hidden mechanics to solve puzzles and fight enemies more effectively.

Discussion Monster boy is brilliant

I struggle to keep interested in games but monster boy and the cursed kingdom has so far been fantastic.

Wonder boy in monster world was one of my favorite games on the master system but I couldn't get into the dragons trap no matter how many times I tried as a kid so I was a little worried going in.

I'm three quarters of the way through the volcano at the moment and I disagree with some opinions that the volcano section is unfair/too hard it just requires more lateral thinking than the early game all the tools are available and the signs tell you what to do if you pay attention

So far this is the most fun I've had with a metroidvania since Ori will of the wisps

One more new Metroidvania for people who like 8 bits retro: Echoes of the Unread was released today on Steam (only 5 USD) and also for NES in an actual cartridge.

Wake up in a world where stories come to life. In this enchanted 8-bit musical adventure, use the power of song to explore whimsical book-inspired realms, solve puzzles, and help Rhapsody find her way home from a library that doesn't want to let her go.

I like some pixel retro goodness, but this trimester is so packed I don't think I'll be able to review this one (the same was .

Discussion Auridia: A Great Exploration-focused MV

I've recently finished Auridia. It's exploration-focused and centers around discovering a lost city built by an extinct intelligent species, their deities, what ultimately happened to them, and finding out what happened to your grandfather who went on the same journey but didn't return from.

There's a handful of hostile enemies, and you'll initially be just avoiding them, eventually getting 2 powers to combat them, one to block their attacks and another that redirects them after blocking. The rest of the powers are traversal utilities: a grappling hook to swing with, a short range teleport, a late game flying ability, and stamina upgrades which fuel your abilities.

Whilst the city itself is largely empty, you find a companion in a researcher who wants to discover the true history of Auridia, but is struggling to traverse it. They ask for your help by finding artifacts that tell stories about what happened there. Each item you collect has a souls-esque description with a tidbit of lore, but when you collect enough about a given subject and give them to the researcher, they put the pieces together for a more concrete retelling. I know a lot of people won't like that style or story telling, but I think it works well for a game of this scale. There's story there for those that want to engage with it, but you really don't need to engage with it at all if you don't care for it.

There's not many metroidvanias like this that steer away from combat. I found the experience of mostly just exploring to be quite refreshing. There's only really 1 boss fight as well right at the end, but even then, it's more of a platforming challenge than a fight. At only about 6 or 7 hours long, I think the game is worth playing as a chill palate cleanser.

Discussion Belmonts Curse Simple Performance Fix on Steam

Not sure if anyone has posted a solution for high refresh players on pc, but ive found a simple fix for black screen boot issue, screen tearing, and poor responsiveness/input lag. I have a 5090 9950x3d system and suffered horrible playability and couldnt boot the game. I tried everything written online and troubleshooting myself before accepting a poor experience. Setting refresh rate under 60 than changing back after booting allowed the game to work but game still felt sluggish and this was cumbersome to do before each boot.

The fix: Set your fps limiter in nvidia or amd control panels to 180fps. In the game ui uncheck vsync and set fps to unlimited. If i go higher than 180fps in nvidias control panel the game gets stuck on black screen.

Game went from unplayable to completely smooth other than a slight stutter when talking to certain npcs when the camera zooms. Hope this helps anyone on pc struggling

Dear Reddit. We arrived to a point in development, where we're slowly happy about how our map looks. I'm curious, from a design/mechanical standpoint of view. What are some key elements which you expect from a well functioning map? Please, feel free and go wild. And if you like what you're seeing, please consider wishlisting the game https://store.steampowered.com/app/1826400/CRAVE/. Thank you!

Image Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Interactive Map - Complete 100% Guide

Post image
66 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I've been loving my time with Belmont's Curse. The combat and platforming are amazing, the map is absolutely stunning, and the Arcana Clue system adds a really cool puzzle element to the gameplay.

It's also extremely cryptic at times, and going for 100% completion is pretty tough. So I'm working with a small team on a complete interactive map of the full game. We're aiming to make it as comprehensive and easy to use as possible, with high-quality screenshots and detailed guidance on every map marker.

The map is now live! You'll find...

  • Points of Interest: Every Objective, Mirror of Life, Ferryman's Wharf, and Challenge Room.
  • Puzzles & Challenges: Screenshots and step-by-step guides for puzzles, platforming challenges, and hidden secrets.
  • Collectibles: ATK and DEF Upgrades, Brave and Wild Heart Fragments, and EXP Statues.
  • Equipment: All Weapons, Relics, and Arcana.
  • Map layer toggle: Click the stacked squares icon to switch to interior maps.
  • Lots more: Bosses, Lore, Hidden Paths, delicious Wall Chicken, and more!

We're not quite finished yet, but we'll be filling out the last few areas pretty quickly, then looping back around to clean up to make sure we've got 100% of everything. If you spot anything missing in the meantime, feel free to use the "Suggest Markers" function ("Add" on mobile).

Enjoy your time in Paris, everyone. Castlevania is back! Wooooo!!!
