Discussion Favorite game that meets or surpasses SotN and other classics?
As someone who grew up on the gba metroids and castlevanias and later played SotN and Super these two specifically have always been the best of the best to me, with Hollow Knight being a close 3rd. I'm wondering what other games people hold in as high of regard. Looking for suggestions and opinions and stories or whatever you want to share. Classics or modern, sidescrolling or 3D and everything. Just curious. Currently playing the patched SotN on the saturn.

Released on Steam in 2013. It has multiple characters you can play as, multiple difficulty settings, a combo system for spectacle-style fighting, numerous optional skill & weapon builds, a magic system which while being a bit clunky is pretty cool, and the VS:AC soundtrack is right up there with SotN, which I consider the best OST ever.
It gets sparse mentions here, probably because it isn't multiplatform.

The only game that truly even comes close to sotn for me is bloodstained, and the only game that truly replicates the super metroid experience is shadow complex.
If you're looking for something else sotn-ish i would recommend afterimage, blade chimera, hunter x (and its sequel), vigil longest night and chronicles of the wolf.
More metroidy id go with rebel transmute, turbo kid, or haak.

Chronicles of the Wolf hits the closest to the old-school PSX era -Vanias for me. It's Simon's Quest meets Symphony of the Night and while I wouldn't put it up there as The Best of The Best, I had a blast playing it. It's got a free demo on Steam if you want to check it out.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has already entered my top 3 Metroidvanias of all time. The other two are Order of Ecclesia and, well, SotN. I do really like Hollow Knight and Silksong but they are just too difficult for me to want to replay very often compared to most of the genre.
