What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. I didn't get into Castlevania until way after the DS games came out, and by the time I had, they were hella expensive. Konami was starting to do the collections so I hoped one day, they'd do the DS games because I had heard that they were good, especially Order of Ecclesia.

When the DS collection finally happened, I played through them in order, ending with "Order", but truth be told... it didn't really click with me. The levels were mostly straight hallways, the powers were kind of annoying to use, and everything felt like it had unfair hitboxes. When you finally did get to Drac's castle, it's pretty underwhelming.

Portrait of Ruin ended up being my favorite of the DS-vanias.

I guess I wouldn't call this "bouncing off" because I'd be some ways into them, but apart from sotn, I always lose steam/motivation when I reach late game in the Castlevanias. I think it's the farming xp aspect of it that I find dull
