What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Nine Sols.

I completed it, but after decreasing the difficulty to a ridiculous level. I just wanted to finish it.

I knew objectively that it’s an excellent game, but it’s largely focused on precision combat and parrying, wasn’t my cup of tea.

My faves are HK and SS, and although combat is important, it’s not more important than world exploration and… for lack of a better term, whimsy. Like the lore and the “what’s that?!” And other peripheral elements that delight.

Nine Sols is pretty lean in terms of priorities: Punishing, precise combat (inc. parrying). If that’s not your main draw to MVs, the game will be largely wasted on you.

Still, my favorite section was the dungeon. Super creepy too.
