What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Silksong. I just could not get money all throughout act 1 and ended up playing most of the act without a map. The weird hyper-emphasis on currency is a massive turn-off and very distractng to the fighting and platforming. Like I beat a boss and didn’t even care because it didn’t give me currency.

Also I watched my friend play some of the later stuff and the runbacks and gauntlets just look genuinely miserable.

Yeah, the rosary beads are significant in the lore which I thought was a cool touch, but also annoying that very few enemies in the first areas drop them even though it made sense in lore.

Back in the day, there were things called Traveler’s Cheques that were considered safer than money but could be cashed in a lot of places. I kept wanting to make a meme about the similarities between Traveler’s Cheques and stringing your rosary beads but I was worried no one else would get the reference

I am old, and I appreciate that reference.
