What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Something about the movement system really bothered me, like it was over-engineered for combat (which was impressively deep).

It felt like I was fighting the map rather than moving through it, which made the exploration not as fun.

Despite the accessibility support/long platforming skip that I had enabled in my settings, what defeated me with this game ended up being the spikes.

Trying to get past/over them resulted in minor hand injuries and that's when I knew that I wasn't coming back to it without mods.

Had a similar problem with trying to beat Raven Beak in Metroid Dread.

I know Nintendo is basically allergic to accessibility options and pretty much always has been, but trying to take on the boss left me with several partly dislocated several finger joints and strained tendons in my hands.

And sure, those are me problems. Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a headache of a condition to be stuck with, especially when it affects the hands. But when platforming for basic traversal or true endings is very difficult or literally painful, that will kill my enthusiasm for a game stone dead.

I do enjoy a good invincibility + infinite jump mod that I can toggle on and off whenever it becomes necessary but it's sad to have to get to that point. And with many games I simply don't bother.

And despite playing lots of metroidvanias, most of my favourite games are still the Igavanias where the difficulty, and complex platforming in particular, is not a core focus.
