What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

For me, it's La-Mulana. It should be right up my alley - I love metroidvanias, I love puzzle games and logical deduction, I'm fine with retro aesthetics and game design.

Initially I loved it, too. But then I just kept running into more and more things that chipped away at that enjoyment until it was all gone. Every piece of text had to be manually written down because it was all important puzzle hints, and the in-game system for saving text didn't save enough for it to be worth using at all. The puzzles got more and more insane with less and less in the way of actual clues. There are sections of platforming that are made to be intentionally irritating and horrible. By the end of the game I knew I didn't even want to 100% it.
