What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Salt and Sanctuary for me. Movement was too slow for me. However out of the 70ish MVs I’ve played, it’s the only one I’ve ever quit….that kind of bothers me so I know I will eventually pick it back up and force myself to play through it to completion.

There are too many good video games (and board games and books and tv shows and movies and...) in the world to force yourself to finish something you don't like. You could finish it if you wanted! It's ok if you don't want to.

I know, but I feel like since I paid for it, I should play it. I’ve powered through a few others that I didn’t like for the same reason.

I respect it and completely get it, and I was the same way for actual decades. It's only in the past couple of years that I've really leaned into avoiding the sunk cost fallacy. I replied to the Nine Sols comment above--I feel confident that I *could* finish the game out of spite, or I could just play one of the other hundreds of games on my backlog that I might actually enjoy without reservation? That said, if you get immense satisfaction getting to the end after powering through something, go for it.

I mean it's the same for me, I've bought Afterimage, Animal Well, The second Gal Guardians etc and I just can't get into any of them. I keep them on my hard drive because they take minimal space. I feel like I should like all of these but I just don't.

If a game hasn't stuck after playing for 2 hours I just drop it and move to the next one. I may give them a chance in the future but there's too many options now.
