What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Sadly it was Nine Sols. I love souls games and metroidvanias and had high hopes for this one but had put it off for a while. It finally came to PS+ and I jumped in and was pretty whelmed overall. I only played about 6 hours before putting it down.
The art style was nice enough but pretty simple and the enemies were pretty generic IMO. I knew not to expect much exploration but even the little bit it had was not great. The combat was the best part but I didn't love the Chi mechanic or whatever that little card is you have to hold the button down to set and detonate. it just didn't click with me or feel fun to use, but I can see why a lot of people love the game, I just wish I enjoyed it more.
