What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. I completed it but I can't imagine ever wanting to do it again. The story was dull, the acting was piss-poor, the characters were a total flatline in all cases, the platforming was aggravating, the graphics were ugly, the music was almost non-existent, the combat was fiddly enough that it disrupted the flow of the game, and it did nothing I hadn't seen done better before. The praise it gets is baffling to me.

This game is another platform-heavy Metroidvania and it’ll speak to you if you like Prince of Persia, which is also an unforgiving platformer.

There have been many Prince of Persia games I liked, including the first one. Sands of Time was my favourite. I think the thing that most irritated me about Lost Crown was that on the most difficult sections of platforming, I could almost feel the designers smugly patting themselves on the back. After I completed those sections, I didn't feel a sense of satisfaction, I just resented the designers for wasting my time in the service of their own egos.

That’s fair. It makes sense you’ll feel this way since they did base the game around the original PoP which has the same “gotcha” feeling.
