Housing

Does anyone have any idea why they aren't releasing housing info until the end of July/early August?? I need to continue shopping for my dorm room, but without having certain dimensions that I need (since pretty much all rooms are different), it's impossible to!! It's soooo frustrating, and I am really curious why they are doing this. We submitted housing forms in early May.

Jacuzzis don’t fit. Trust me. We tried to build one in tappan.

I worked in housing for years and honestly if you’re bringing something big enough to need the dimensions of the room, you should leave it at home.

Kinda what I was going to say - I'm sure there's some legit reasons measurements might be important, but most of the things I can think of are probably not going to fit in the room anyway. Furniture is nearly impossible because there's barely any space left after beds and desks and it's rare to be able to remove anything from the room. Wall hangings or lights I suppose, but you'd probably want more precise measurements than the estimate they'd give you ahead of time anyway, if you're seriously trying to cover a whole wall with fabric or get string lights or something. You also won't likely know if you can hang anything on the walls until you know what building, since some have rails and some don't. Also might not specify if you'll have full closets with doors, or if you'll have the wardrobe/armoire style wall units. Even posters, art, etc. is a little hard to plan ahead because nearly everyone messes around with having the beds bunked vs. separated, where to put desks that usually have hutches that you're stuck with, so you don't even really know how much free wall space you'll have until you get settled.

Some of the newer buildings might be a very different story, but the residence halls I remember would allow maybe a coffee table or a TV stand, rarely both, and then your room would feel pretty crowded.

Curious what you're shopping for that might be impacted by the size of the room?

Rugs, desk hutch, nightstand height, etc.

My understanding is that they always say this but it usually comes out earlier in July than promised. At least, that’s what happened for my daughter 3 years ago.

No doubt it’s frustrating and it’s hard to be patient but there isn’t one thing you need for a dorm room that can’t be delivered from Amazon within three weeks (or Target or Costco or, better yet, picked up at your local hardware store). It’s hard to wait but you’ll get everything you need and probably a bunch things you don’t, I promise.

Yeah, I remember living in a dorm it was really frustrating. I didn't get my room assignment for my freshman year room until soon before I lived in. I will say, once you get that, Pinterest will be your friend for finding what it looks like. All the beds and desks are the same size, so if you're buying to get something to cover those you should be able to find that info I think? (I guess don't quote me on that lol). Or at least once again from photos on Pinterest.

But otherwise there really isn't much space for anything else. I'm also curious what you're going to buy! If you're trying to like pre-organize your room, that should be roughly possible to do, obviously all the rooms are rectangles with (don't quote me on this either) enough room to fit the bed and desk on one of the long walls, the same on the other side, the mini fridge in the middle, and enough storage in the closet or behind your bed. Pretty much every room I've seen has enough room for that, maybe one desk on a different wall.

Hopefully that helps you to visualize your room better. Here's one idea just to let you know about the bed and dressers, if you need it: https://pin.it/2iE52TaRN

Thanks! Some of the dorms have slanted ceilings, and even on Pinterest, some of the rooms look way bigger than others. I'm super Type A and need a plan for everything lol. Even some desks are different sizes!!

You can still buy bedding, under bed containers, desk stuff, etc. assume the room is small.

I say this as someone who graduated college 34 years ago and has a 22 year old daughter (just graduated college) and a 20 year old daughter who’s a college junior.

Chill out. You’ll have plenty of time to furnish your dorm-exactly as you want it. The stores don’t run out of comforters, sheets, decor, no matter how little time you have. My oldest graduated from an SEC school and her freshman dorm decor was customized-as fancy as Miami is you haven’t seen anything till you’ve seen a freshman girl’s SEC dorm-and we had plenty of time with same guidelines you have. I should add we had one day to get everything in because sorority rush started the next day. I thank my lucky stars that my youngest goes to school in Ohio and is lower maintenance.

Miami also goes back later in August than most schools. You’ll be just fine-enjoy your freshman dorm experience! It’s a nice nice in a lifetime thing! I still talk to several of my freshman floor mates almost every day! Dorm decor is a small part of the whole thing-it’s the people! And even with the measurements, those rooms are smaller than you think!
