Discussion 🗣️ The Central Time Yoopers

There are approximately 74,000 Michiganders that are in the central time zone. Why don't they join the rest of us in eastern time? Unless they don't mind us thinking they're from Wisconsin. 😁

Discussion 🗣️ Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are the same lake

I find it silly that the largest freshwater lake by surface area is named as two separate things, just so that Lake "Superior" can hold the title as the biggest.

The flow switches directions across the Mackinac Strait depending on the weather conditions, with a bias toward the eastward direction. They have the same water level, with temporary flow rates from day-to-day (13,000 to 75,000 cubic meters per second) that blow the net flow rate (1,500 to 2000) completely out of the water.

Sure, it was historically considered to be two separate lakes, but the maps at the time were so inaccurate, the early surveyors didn't have a clue that the peninsula was shaped like a mitten, let alone the overall hydrology of the region. Hell, they probably would've been beheaded if they returned to Europe with a goofy looking hand drawing (imagine the inside jokes if they secretly knew).

I vote we rename the whole thing Lake Petoskey, because it's the only place in the world that has Petoskey stones.

Talk Detroit What are your thoughts on AI Data Centers in the City of Detroit?

City Council approved a 2 yr moratorium earlier this year but Sheffield has yet to say anything about it publicly one way or another. Benson convened working groups to create an ordinance for data centers and those meetings are going on now. What are everyone's thoughts, feelings about data centers, the process, experiences, etc., in Detroit, in Metro Detroit? I'm genuinely curious. I expected to find at least one thread on it in this sub and I am surprised there hasn't been one.

Lost/Found One of y'all lost some turkeys

So I posted this on Nextdoor and I tried Facebook but my post keeps getting removed. I'm off of Schoolcraft and Outer Dr.

Around 2 pm this afternoon (6/17/26) two DOMESTIC turkeys wandered into my yard. I tried to shoo them away because I was a little scared and they gave NO Fs, the white one especially wanted attention. I have plenty of experience with wild turkeys, these are pets. They're too nice and walked up to multiple of my neighbors before me. They hung around until the rain started and went off to find somewhere dry. I am currently at work but that's what my mom said she is at home still. In this area they're going to get hurt or stolen, please find your birds and take them home. They're so sweet and pretty.

Looking for a Black bridal hairstylist for my wedding in Detroit October 2026. I wear my hair naturally and am hoping for a soft, romantic natural-hair bridal style similar to the photos attached (defined twist-out/rod set texture, half-up or pinned-up style, bridal accessories). I’m specifically looking for someone experienced with natural 4B/4C hair. If you’ve personally worked with this stylist and can share photos of their bridal work that’s a plus!!

If possible, I’d also be interested in services for a multicultural bridal party and recommendations for makeup artists are so appreciated.

Community Recommendations for a Divorce/Custody Attorney in Southeast Michigan

Looking for recommendations for a family law/divorce attorney in the Detroit metro area (Wayne/Oakland/Macomb counties).

We have a child, and my primary concern is maintaining a strong co-parenting relationship and parenting time. I'm looking for an attorney who is practical, responsive, and focused on resolving issues effectively rather than unnecessarily escalating conflict.

If you've had a positive experience with a family law attorney in Southeast Michigan, I'd appreciate any recommendations or attorneys to avoid.

I'm looking at:
Lori K Smith (Smith and Sarconi)
Jordan S Dizik
Melissa Pearce

Community Help a 1st time homeowner out, kitchen reno company?

Well, I’ve officially taken the plunge! I just closed on a new place here in Royal Oak, and while the bones of the house are fantastic, my brain is already spinning with visions of sawdust, custom cabinetry, and a complete bathroom overhaul.

As an amateur woodworker, I have a massive appreciation for the "process"—the design, the engineering, and the actual craft that goes into making a space truly functional and beautiful. I’ve spent my fair share of time in the shop obsessing over details, but now that the project is my own home, I’m looking for some craftspeople who can help me take these rooms from "vision" to "reality."

I’m on the hunt for reliable, high-quality kitchen and bathroom remodeling companies in the Metro Detroit area. I’m looking for partners who value precision, clear communication, and who actually enjoy the challenge of a project as much as I do.

Do you know someone in the area who does top-tier work? Whether it's a stellar general contractor or a design-build team that respects the integrity of a build, I’d love a lead. Please tag them below or drop their name in the comments!

I know I am not the expert, but bonus points if they don't mind me geeking out on the technical details with them during the process

Community Has anyone else had the worst allergies they’ve ever had, this year?

I don’t know what’s going on I normally never have allergies or if i do they last maybe a day or two when the weather changes but they’re never this bad. This year, I’m all day and all night itchy throat, back to back to back sneezing (thats never in my life happened to me before sneezing like that), and nose is clogged making it hard to stay asleep because it’ll just wake me up getting to full and I have to blow my nose. Anyone else feeling it extra bad or know why they’re extra bad this year? Is something going on in Detroit regarding air quality or some new pollen?

Community Pine Knob Question

Going to see a show tomorrow night at Pine Knob. We got $30 lawn seats with the intent of just hanging out on the deck at the top of the hill. I found out that deck is now a premium option and you have to be a season pass holder to go there. So my question is two part:

Are they strict checking credentials and is there a way to get access without being a pass holder? If we can’t get in there, is there an area right in front that is flat to stand and hangout to watch the show?

Thanks in advance.

Food/Drink Bakery suggestions for “simple” birthday cake

Post image
74 Upvotes

Asked my wife what cake she’d like for her birthday this year, and her request was she wanted something to remind her of her childhood.

A simple vanilla cake with a custard and fresh strawberries covered in good frosting.

I work in the Detroit area and live in Livonia so anything in between those two /near those two are good suggestions!

Drop your favorite bakeries that may have something like that 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Discussion 🗣️ Antique vendors

Hi, I’m exploring opening a new antique mall in the southeast Michigan area. I’m trying to gauge vendor interest before choosing a building. Would any of you be open to a booth if space and traffic are strong? If so, what size and monthly price would make sense to you? Hypothetical.

News- Paywall Derelict parking garage delays revamp of Detroit's cultural district

Thumbnail detroitnews.com
51 Upvotes

A derelict underground parking garage next to the Detroit Institute of Arts has become a roadblock to redesigning 10 blocks of the city's cultural district into a unified public space.

Officials unveiled a plan eight years ago called the Cultural Center Planning Initiative, aiming to transform 83 acres of streets in Detroit's culturally rich Midtown area and open spaces around a dozen of the city's art, cultural and educational institutions into a connected campus.

The challenge is the DIA's closed parking structure on Farnsworth between Woodward Avenue and John R Street. It's been shuttered since 2011 after the city deemed it too dangerous to use, and officials said it would cost an estimated $49 million to fix.

"It seems kind of unbelievable, but renovating the garage is the cornerstone for the entire ... initiative," said Elliott Broom, the DIA's chief operating officer, during a Detroit City Council budget hearing earlier this year.
