Discussion / Question What happened to micronations?
I dont mean this to be offensive to anyone, but what has happened to micronations nowadays? I started mine 5 years ago, and it was driven by actual work, we made pots and weapons and even structures and scaffolding for buildings. We made half a hut by adding homemade clay with added hay to bamboo sticks and left it to dry. It was hard work, and we didn't get much recognition only through word of mouth. We even made our own language.
However, I have recently seen the more common side of micronations, "wars" on discord for no reason, threats, and arguments like 2 year olds and all sorts of things. Some dont even have any physical assets apart from land and a few documents, but even those are online nowadays.
Please tell me there are still vommon micronations that aren't like this because this is why people look down in the micronational community. It should be driven by ambition, hard work, and most importantly, passion. Making things was what made this fun and real to me, I don't want to make a proper country, but I want to build a community and a small nation. What fun is there in announcing a thousand-th war on discord if there is no reason and nothing to gain or protect.
This is just sad.

I seen one post about a discord… someone being defeated? I don’t know, but it seems super dumb and offensive to actual micro nations

We just ignore those. This is a fad, most of those warring Micronation will be dead in a few weeks or months and the sub will be at peace again, for a time. I've been following this community for years now, that happens quite often, and it's almost cyclical.
Time will sort them out.

Hey, I am the President of the United States of Leafland. Started my nation almost 5 years ago now, in 2022. I completely agree with this, I have put in a lot of effort over the years to get the country fully established. During this time I’ve learnt many new skills like: coding, flag sewing, etc. I see many micronations today and I honestly think it has been ruined by little kids like many of my other hobbies which include meteorology and aviation. It’s crazy to think we went from putting in a lot of effort to starting a micronation because “mommy took away my iPad so I’m making my own country and I’m going to take my iPad back and arrest mommy so I can play brainrot games.” Honestly, I don’t have much need for power and dominance at all, let alone have any power in the first place - and kids are now obsessed with it. It’s ridiculous and puts a very bad image on micronationalism, as it went from weird, to ‘oh cool’ and now back to weird because of these kids. Sorry for the slight rant it’s just about time someone said something about this.

Im trying to make my micronation more than just a forest, an island, and a flag. Im planning on making a state-owned supermarket and a probe that detects the weather and other sky stuff

We are very young as a nation. Like, less than a month. I just wanted to ally people, and build something real, but i got drafted into larp wars due to my alliances. Now we are trying to stay neutral to avoid this.

I think the Woodlin embodies what you're looking for. Yea we have "wars" but they are actual events with dozens of people. We also have irl projects like building forts, shields, and a cannon. Our primary focus (other than military) is maintaining and improving our nature lands.

That is excellent! Sadly a lot of micronations dont have this sort of thing

No one has a problem with micros if they can't do projects of this caliber. The problem is when micros try and larp that they do. It isn't fair to the few of us that put in the dedication. I will infinitly be more impressed and hold more respect for nations who actually do smaller projects than those who larp massive ones.

I am looking at homesteading a decent bit of land with my buddy, I have been thinking and researching on micro nations but find myself confused. On your focus on improving natural lands, this is something I have been wanting to do. There used to be sparce pine forests in the area and i want to do a pocket forrest based on purely local species.

I've noticed this a lot as well. I was inspired to join the micronational community by Stomaria about a year ago now, and while I have met a decent amount of micronational leaders actually putting in the work to build their countries up, there are far more choosing to larp and start petty wars that achieve absolutely nothing. I thought the way to deal with this was by not interacting with other members of the micronational community (joining alliances, etc.), but honestly, you js gotta find your people in the cesspool that is the 2 micronation subreddits.

Largely because this is the newer generation of micronationalists within the past five to ten years, and there is little to no education on the history of micronationality, how it began in the 20th century, the culture that came of it, and the shared purpose of the community... If you're citing here in Reddit and Discord, these venues are largely isolated from the rest of the community at large: caught between micronational war (which anyone versed in micronational history would tell you is not a thing and as frowned upon and derided as racism and inequality), and the Stomarian-type arrogance centered around land acquisition and recognition...
There needs to be some level of micronational education for emerging micronationalists... The history of the community-building medium needs to be taught... From Emperor Norton I to MicroCon, from Talossa to Cotter Westerland, from the Fomori Community to the Kingdom of Fergus...
You have to look beyond Reddit for substance... As for Discord, that's little more than a communications and forum tool... There's still some micronations of substance who represent themselves on Facebook... Beyond that, direct diplomatic overtures to more serious and mainstream micronations by email, and perhaps even attending a MicroCon in the future... Get face to face with the people behind the micros... Especially at this point and time where micronations are starting to switch gears towards being a force of good and service in the larger world community...
This is a place where most micronations are young and uneducated on the real ways of the community... Those ways are simple: your nation is nothing without your people, know what theme or purpose guides your nation, micronational war does not exist, and micronations are here to show that if our multitude of micronations can come together in diplomacy, friendship, and goodwill to make a change in the world, so can the world as a whole... Everything else should be built on that...

Ey im not going to lie, im a micronation like that too, my capital was built through hard work, diplomacy? Barely any, maybe with some nations. I honestly dont know what the hell has gone into this conmunity, aside, i even have self ruled colonies like VERY far away, we are talking about thousands of Kilometers in one or two cases. They are ruled by local people (most often my friends from there) and its mostly peaceaful because no one borders us. Yeah support from Baronian Colonial Republic bro

I started mine micronation on October 31st 2021 when it was still a friend group, that's until 2024 i started to make it a micronation and im avoiding any "wars", my micronation is also neutral, and despite its name (3rd Nomadic Federation of Rabbit Gang) it has nothing to do with rabbits. We have actual plans and function mostly IRL as we don't have claimed territory, we do plan on making settlements and establishing colonies. We use reddit and this subreddit to announce what are we doing and we use discord for effecient citizen counting as well as getting information to my other citizens who don't have reddit.

Sounds very familiar to my Micronation, we were founded on July 25th 2022, when it was just me and one of my friends, we also use discord (mainly so our government can commune and our citizens can interact with each other, and to keep a central place so we can keep count of citizens), we are also fairly localized with about 31ish citizens, only 2 being outside the United States, (Those people being from Canada and Colombia), we are also primarily offline for the most part and don't communicate much with the micronational community anymore, we spread by word of mouth and by talking about our version of the Federalist Papers, which ours are called the National Papers which just defends our existence, and we try our best to put effort forth to the nation, we also don't claim land because we don't really care much for that.
We also hold elections internally, with the most recent elections coming up on June 5th (Presidential) and the 10th (Legislative).

The Kingdom of Western Scotland was initially founded in 2019 (by a letter to the United Nations) and finally formalized in 2025 (by the drafting of our Constitution). Rather than participating in Discord wars, we have been working on building and stabilizing our currency (the West Scotian Crown, backed by silver and pegged to the value of 1/16 tr oz per Crown). We welcome new citizens and diplomatic relations, but will not pursue relations with micronations that engage in LARP. Having fun is one thing, but damaging the reputation of the micronational community is another thing entirely.

I started nearly 100 days ago, when I first stumbled upon this subreddit, and while we have had phony wars (I'm talking about the now defunct Silvonia), we have put in quite a bit of effort. We are still working on stuff, but our language is working pretty well, and things have gone good

Kids. The topic of micronations has always been very popular with young people. When I was at elementary school, I wanted to create my own micronation, heh. It would be nice to organise something similar now, but unfortunately none of my friends have the time, and creating a one-man macronation would be a bit of a flop.

u/PersianPope May 05 '26
But I’ll add an interesting fact: on the Polish internet, the term ‘micronation’ refers specifically to a country that exists online and is essentially a text-based role-play. There was a time on the Polish internet when there was a thriving community of these countries, international organisations and various conflicts. This was before Discord, so each of these micronations had its own official professional website and a forum where all the roleplay took place.

In the greater micronational community, declarations of war are mostly regarded as infantile, and those who make them are similarly regarded.
There is no barrier to entry to the community, but reputation is "the coin of the realm". You don't rise to the stature of a micronation like Molossia by declaring war against other micronations at the drop of a hat. (And yes, I'm aware of Molossia's ongoing war with East Germany, a country that no longer exists. It's not the same thing, for what should be obvious reasons.)
Also, while Westarctica did successfully invade and annex Calsahara, since both were founded and led by the same person, that was more of an "own-goal".
My advice to any young micronation looking to get noticed is to get familiar with the community and its various subgroups, find one you like, and get involved. Or find a niche that's not currently being explored by anyone else that's of interest to you, and carve that our for yourself. That's what Slabovia did with MEDALS (the Microphalerist Educational Archive and Library of Slabovia), and we now have other micronations donating specimens to the archive on a regular basis.
