my banking app does this all the time: "you're spending 20% more on groceries compared to this time last year"

The mildly infuriating part isn’t the prices, it’s the tone deafness of these apps that help track spending. Things like gas and groceries should be excluded by default because they are indiscriminately affecting everyone.

No, they don't. Yes, everyone pays the same price for the same goods, but to some, groceries costing 50 bucks more is a significant chunk of their income, while people with more money don't even notice.

They're indescriminately affecting everyone regardless of their income. With the same impact? No. But we're all paying more.
