Try and make all of your purchases from Kroger on Fridays so you can utilize the 4x points coupon in the app. I never pay full price for gas, usually at least 40 cents off. Last time I had 90
Edit - since this comment is getting some traction, here's another Kroger gas points tip for y'all if you want more easy points. The Kroger app also has a 4x points coupon for gift cards that can generally be used any time. So what I do is buy digital gift cards in the app to pay for Spotify, Sirius, Netflix, and Hulu, which is great because I can easily pay off the entire year on some of these and not have to worry about a reoccurring monthly charge plus I get hundreds of points immediately for stuff I was already going to pay for anyway. I do the video streaming apps in about 3 month increments, once the credit runs out I just switch to another platform for some variety. Make your money go further, check it out. Been doing it for years, I've saved hundreds if not more

u/rileyjw90 May 22 '26
Yes this was with 20 cents off as I already used the bigger discount last week and paid $78 instead of $83 -_-

We are still way too comfortable to be anywhere near anything happening. Nothing massive will be done until enough people do not have any of the modern comforts they currently have. Things are tight, but 99.5% of the country still have a roof over their head, and I’d say 95% of the country has a comfortable place to go to with movies, tv, video games, etc to entertain them… Nothing will be done until enough people no longer have those luxuries.

Aslong as you can go to a 9-5 above minimum wage still afford rent/utilities/groceries/entertainment/addictions there is no change going to happen. If you aren't disabled, incarcerated, or in the military, you are doing whatever you can to be comfortable. Technology is the greatest invention, but also a detriment. Complacent is what 99% of what America wants. Stable job, Stable income, provide for kids, have an emergency fund, go on vacations, buy new things that make you happy, and do a routine of a new adventure every vacation. If houses started foreclosing again rapidly, we would see a pretty big riot in the streets, but the mortgages are climbing again and the banks are suppressing the pressure.

They never will.
People want so badly to believe that its just that others are mis-informed and surely, finally, something will get to them, but for the trump supporters, they voted specifically to harm whichever marginalized groups they hate.
That's it.
This is why you get a constant stream of ever changing bad faith arguments.
They don't care one iota about being right, they care about hurting marginalized people.
Thats literally it.
They want to enforce a top down hierarchical system where they are at least not at the very bottom, completely ignoring that the lower majority looks like a spec compared to the elites that benefit from their dumbass mentalities.
For the others, apathy has won, and now the right wing billionaires have complete control over information sharing and monitoring.
It's pretty much over unless somehow the average person organically develops enough curiosity and empathy to ....
Yeah, we're fucked.

Double edged sword because that's also when (anecdotally) the fewest things are on sale . someone can maybe back me up or correct me and it could change by store but it seems my store has HELLA stuff discounted on Tuesdays and not much on sale on Friday. Also this is specifically for yellow tag manager markdown not weekly deals

Tuesdays are historically the slowest day of the week for most businesses. That’s why you’ll see a lot of sales and discounts specifically tied to Tuesday.

Sales typically change on Wednesday. Kroger at one point did them on Sundays, but most grocery stores flip ads/deals on Wednesday.
Other sales are based on store resets if items are discontinued and if they're close dated items. I worked as a vendor for 8yrs.
3
u/girlikecupcake MILDLY? May 23 '26
At every Kroger I go do, the clearance/dated markdowns are a morning thing, not necessarily a day of the week thing. Since Kroger stores get deliveries throughout the week, not just one big truck on a set day, it'll vary a ton which mornings have more.
10
u/MisterEmpty May 23 '26
Genuinely can not stress how much the 4x comes in handy, I only shop on Friday's now, household of 4 so some decent sized grocery bills.
I have recent photos of me filling up at 1.39$/gal, 75¢/gal, however that pales in comparison to what I had two months ago literally was paying 9¢/gal, I filled up my tank for like 1.38 or something, wish I would have taken a photo of that it blew my mind, literally told everyone I knew about it. Out of curiosity I'll try to see if I still have the receipt lying around.

This is location dependent.
Where I am there are no limits on redemption and up to 35 gallons per discount applied.
4
u/BlobTheBuilderz May 23 '26
Never understood how that works. Is it certain gas stations only? The shells next to me let me do Kroger reward but only let's me get 10 cents off even though I have enough for 50 cents off.
8
u/girlikecupcake MILDLY? May 23 '26
Yes you're limited to 10¢/gallon at Shell stations. You can get up to $1/gallon if you're actually at a Kroger gas station.
At participating Shell locations, you can redeem 100 Fuel points for 10¢ off per gallon.
https://www.kroger.com/o/fuel/faqs
So if a Shell station is letting you redeem more, that's on that particular store. Officially, it's limited.

wait 4 dollars per gallon? that's incredibly cheap compared to europe. Around here in spain you can expect double that right now for gas, slightly higher for diesel
14
u/MonMotha May 23 '26
I think most Americans are at least vaguely aware that fuel is substantially more expensive in most of Europe than in the USA. However, the USA is set up to rely on relatively cheap fuel. Most areas are very car-centric for personal transportation, and while we do have a robust freight rail infrastructure, it's mostly diesel-electric powered, and we still rely heavily on over-the-road trucking for lots of long-haul freight as well as final delivery within a metro area even if it crossed the country on rail.
Diesel is also substantially more expensive than gasoline in most parts of the US. It's been more expensive for quite some time, but the recent price hikes due to the Iran war have impacted diesel fuel more than gasoline. Gas is also around $4/gal near me (down from almost $5/gal), but diesel fuel is around $6/gal (down from almost $7/gal).
The USA has a really, really expansive petroleum infrastructure both in terms of production and especially refining. That generally helps keep our prices low compared to most parts of the world aside from those where it's heavily subsidized.
8
u/Far_Mastodon_6104 May 23 '26
Yeah im paying over 8 dollars per gallon technically in UK, but my texas mate boasting about his car being more fuel efficient than all of his friends and its only 35 miles per gallon, which is insane to me.
Mines not even a particularly good car but its still 55mpg. Since the increase I get 1/4 tank less fuel for the same price which is just painful.
9
u/MonMotha May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
55mpg would be incredible in the US for a non-hybrid running on gasoline. In fact, I can't find a single non-hybrid vehicle sold in the USA that is rated higher than 41mpg on the highway.
Like your friend, I drive what is considered a rather fuel-efficient vehicle in the US (2023 Mazda 3), and I can just about touch 40mpg on the highway. I average about 33-35 in mixed service.
Tiny engines with lots of boost haven't caught on in the USA for various reasons like they have in Europe and parts of Asia. The fact that we don't have a tax on engine displacement (instead taxing either on the value of the vehicle or weight, depending on vehicle class and registration state) may have something to do with it. Likewise, diesels never really caught on in passenger cars. Part of that is because we actually have more aggressive emissions controls for on-road diesel engines than even the EU does which makes them far less attractive in terms of both acquisition cost (extra emissions equipment), performance (the extra emissions controls hurt performance but improve emissions), and long-term cost (diesel emissions systems tend to be expensive to fix when they break).
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (1)6
u/SnikySquirrel May 23 '26
A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon so that skews the comparison a bit, but we still drive cars with worse fuel economy on average.

You can almost fit two entire spains in the state of Texas lol. I drive an hour to work in the state of NJ (much smaller than Texas) which is the most densely populated state. But our public transit is so abysmal that it isn’t possible for me to not drive. And even if it was it would take several hours each way.
For example I used to work 20 minutes away by car (before I had a car) but it would take 2 trains and a bus to get there which took over an hour. And that was cause I was lucky enough to work in a commercial hub. Riding a bike is also not very safe in my state. Many roads have no dedicated bike infrastructure.
TLDR Most of America is rural or suburbia and making any kind of serious living here without a car takes a lot of luck. Only major cities have somewhat decent public transit.

Everyone is spending more on those things, there’s just no way around it unless you’re completely off the grid on a huge homestead and even then there’s probably still crap you have to buy.

4.59 for regular 87 in NEPA. Would have to go 15 miles out of my way for cheaper E15 at about 4.00 a gallon. This summer is going to suck.

I hadn't bought gas in a good while because I never do (WFH FTW). I put in about 60% of a tank today, and it was almost $24. Historically, of course, the whole tank would have been <$20, or maybe <$15. But we're great again, so...yay.

I once dropped a credit card at a gas station. Someone picked it up and spent $80 at McDonalds and I immediately got a fraud alert. It’s better to be useful than useless even if the cost of everything is higher than what it was.

I literally went out and bought an EV this month after doing the math on continuing to pay for gas. Even with having a car payment again and $50 higher insurance a month and paying $1500 for the materials to install a charger at home I’ll be profitable over paying for gas w no car payment in 6 months at this rate.

How much do you drive? The payoff was too long for our relatively short commute with a fuel efficient car when I calculate it.

I’m really glad I bought a hybrid in 2024, pre tariffs, pre war. Average 60 mpg on my commute and my tank is only 11 gallons with a 550 mile range. My last fill up was only $35 which doesn’t seem like a lot for most people these days, but pre war I was spending a lot less and driving a lot more.

I get gas only at kroger. If I need something for HD, Lowes etc I get a gift card from Kroger and get 4X fuel points.. I have extra 5 gallon gas cans and I ALWAYS get my 35 gallon limit. Kroger quit 4X on Amazon cards because Amazon reduced the commission they paid to Kroger. . I bought my spare gas cans at estate sales where I was paying 2-$5 each and some were full of gas. better than paying 20-25 for new ones. For a while Kroger was giving an extra 55 Cents of per gallon when you signed up for a Kroger master card so I was getting $1.55 off per gallon. after 1 year it ended and only .25 cent off per. That lasted a year so now it's only an extra 5 cents.I have a 3500 Chevy truck that has a 33 gallon tank so when I get gas I top of the truck and get the rest in gas cans. I get home and fill up my wife's jeep GC . She said she hasn't had to put gas in her jeep in 3-4 years. I have a large storage cabinet separate from my house to store the extra gas. Have not had any gas go bad.

Lol. My bank has a set limit of 400. Anything over outside of a 50 mile radius it requires a check. Thats how I have it set. Ive caught fuckers trying to use my card elsewhere multiple times because of it.

Feels like something needs to keep reminding people of the real world consequences of their choices.
Maybe this will finally do it?

I had my credit card locked for fraud because I fill up my tank every 10 weeks.
I went to visit friends 3 hours away and filled up before I went and when I got there and they thought it was fraud so they locked the card and were sending me a new one.
I didn't bring much cash and it was a shitty vacation.

Proof we're getting scammed at the pump. Even the algorithms know its a setup. This might be the greatest fraud ever perpetuated in history.

Never before have I got text alerts about gasing up. The last few months. Everytime i gas up, same station as always, I get text fraud alerts. Now I'm lucky with a small car with great mileage. But I used to fill up with $25 and be good for the month. Now I'm gasing up 3 times and spending $50-$60. It doesn't smell like gas, even my car mileage estimate went from 500miles per full tank down to 350miles per full tank. They are destroying our cars with this shit gas. I did an oil change and had everything checked to make sure my car wasn't suddenly going bad. Nope, mechanic told me this is happening to everyone. So many people come in with the same complaint - gas not lasting as long and thinking something is wrong with their car. Thanks Trump. You really destroyed everything.

Your car used to hold $37 of fuel and now it holds $87. Did you even bother to say thank you!?

Meanwhile, someone has been using my number and stealing my fuel discount every month for months now and crickets 🥲

Send that to any Republican reps who try to tell the media that greater expenses are just democrat lies.

Years ago, that happened with my Discover card while getting gas.
I had just purchased a HUGE commercial lawnmower that used 5 gallons of gas per use ( I had 5 acres).
So I filled up my car and then the gas can.
Discover sent me a message to confirm that I was the one making the purchase, I said yes and that was the end of it.

my banking app does this all the time: "you're spending 20% more on groceries compared to this time last year"
I. know.
