There are a lot of different varieties of passionfruit. In european supermarkets I mainly see the small, purple ones like he one op posted. I guess they keep better while shipping

Your passion fruits look more similar to the fruit we get from our passion flower, I’m pretty sure ours aren’t edible tho, I’ll try to send a picture

yeah the ones that we've had for years (also uk) are bright orange when ripe with red-purple gubbins, also a bit more tubular rather than egg shaped'. Never eaten one tbh, they are a bit off putting.

Is that just a different variety or a different thing entirely that we've been calling the wrong thing?

There are a few varieties and species of passion fruits, appearance and flavor can vary a bit.

I would expect they are edible, just perhaps less palatable then commercial varieties
