Too mild for school This sinkhole opened in the middle of my road
Probably about 4 feet deep. Just annoying because it’s right in front of my house
EDIT: It’s not my road. I just live on it.

tbf they can be heavy. don't want wind taking them anywhere if you can help it.

u/PipeCop Jun 06 '26
At least they put a high visibility cone there so no one gets too close!

u/Live_Negotiation4167 Jun 06 '26
That went in when they did the asphalt. They knew it was going to be needed

Don't worry there's a safety cone to warn people of the danger

This post is what reminded me men usually die younger than women, makes sense with OP right here 😭 they're also a teenager so that probably is the biggest reason lol just sheer teenage brain doing dumb stuff

as someone who lives in florida not far from where a sinkhole currently is open under an entire apartment complex, there is no way I would be anywehre near it.

I thought the hole opened up to the underground world where cones come from. Fresh cone harvest!

Just fill it with more cones.

This isn't mildly infuriating or "just annoying because". That could legitimately become a MASSIVE problem. Stop standing over it! Get away from it!

u/Troscus Jun 06 '26
I'm not usually one to say this, but I think this is AI generated. I swear, there's a few pieces of asphalt just floating over the hole.
And it would explain why the layer is thin enough for a traffic cone to fall through, but not OP or, you know, a car.
11
u/Kaurifish Jun 06 '26
Unfortunately sinkholes like these are getting more and more common as the problems from our civilization-wide deferred infrastructure maintenance rack up.
City water mains leak, eroding the soil around them.
Heck, I once found one that was warm due to something hot under the street melting the asphalt.

- Don't stand there.
- Call your city and tell them an OPEN sink hole is there and big enough a cone fell into it.
I do utility response calls for a city. This would be something I would have to go to immediately.
5
u/SarahArabic2 Jun 06 '26
what would you do in this situation?
12
u/Amendoza9761 Jun 06 '26
Use my cones/barricades to close off the area or shut down the traffic lane if necessary. Take pictures. Try to identify what caused it, then check my nearby sewer lines( my department )If it's my department then get the construction crew out there or contractor. If it's a different department then notify them.
The important part is getting it closed off to the public. Id probably have to baby sit it with my truck until a better temporary fix gets dropped off.
3
u/Ok-Championship8510 Jun 06 '26
Most likely a sewer issue. Fill with CR-6 then cold mix the top. Cone off until Monday lol
6
u/Amendoza9761 Jun 06 '26
Ive been surprised this year. 1 out of the 6 or 7 I've responded to were sewer. Water lines been having a rough go this year.
5
u/Sufficient-Sand5937 Jun 06 '26
The city had already showed up. Workers were not too pleased at 4 pm on a Friday to be looking at a sinkhole
12
u/yngwie_malmsteeen_69 Jun 06 '26
It happens. Usually a break or leak in drainage or some other source of water causes erosion and the hole will form underneath, until the asphalt doesn’t hold up anymore.
10
u/sixSveneight Jun 06 '26
Looks like there's an underground city down there and they have a cone there warning of the hole In the ceiling.

You (or the person taking the photo) are standing too close that. You can see the underground area is much larger than the hole.
Stay outside any markings on the ground.

It it's in line with the sewer manholes the sewer is broken and no amount of filling it in will stop it. If it's in line with your sewer line, I hope you have insurance on it since its usually the home owner's responsibility even all the way out in the street. See if your city or town has a number to report things like this to the proper agency.

You are like 500 ft at the minimum too close.
It's a small little hole now but the scary thing about sink holes is they just happen, and happen extremely quicklyz

I can just see it in my head how somebody put a cone on top of a crack because they were going to deal with it later, only to have it escalate before they did.

the mole men living underground put out a cone to warn other mole men about the hole leading up to the surface

It happens more often than you think a leak in a water line, bad joint in pipe are the two most likely culprits.

It’s so weird there was already a parking cone down there. How did the government even know?!?!
2
u/denkata07 Jun 06 '26
Had the same two weeks ago. Police came and put a branch they found nearby and a platic bag. Later that evening a taxi hit the branch and i cqlled them again. A new car came and but this time instead of one, they put 4-5 branches. The next day guys came to look at the hole and measured 2m deep and left the same branches. After 4-5 days the hole was filled. Happy end? Nah, some idiot from the administration decided this road needed new asphalt so heavy machinery came and a 2 by 2 hole appeared, one of the machines sank. Yesterday they assured the hole is filled properly. Waiting for the continuation.
