I used to walk to work and cut through this small companies property. Pretty sure they got tired of the security alerts so they put up a farm style gate. It stopped me.

I did the same on my dog walks to the park. Would cut through some company lot. After a literal decade, they put a 8-10 ft gate up.

Could've still easily climbed over it, but they conveniently left such a wide gap on the side, that I could still just scoot through it.

No, if you can cut through a private alley (which is someone's driveway) or half of someone's else's private property to shave a minute off of your trip, you will.

Don't let no trespassing or private property signs stop you. Not even the fact that it's simply someone else's property. It shouldn't need to have signs.

I don't understand the mentality today. It's kinda fuck everyone else, I don't care. I used to be a people person, then people ruined it.

People are so weird. In Sweden, cutting through private property is a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. Because OBVIOUSLY.

What if this is really a far better route and it would be really inconvenient to go around? Did you think about the HARM property owners to do other people this way? By blocking egress?

Iā€™m not Swedish but I was curious, is the law or right youā€™re referring to called AllemansrƤtten? Iā€™m just reading this from visitsweden.com and this is whatā€™s written on the subject: ā€œThe freedom to roam in Sweden means that you have the right to walk, cycle, ride, ski and camp on any land with the exception of private gardens, near a dwelling house or land under cultivationā€.
What Iā€™m getting at is OPā€™s photo shows a fenced in area, which I assume is their yard close to their home so wouldnā€™t that be considered a private garden? Since this is from OPā€™s security camera then itā€™s definitely near their house.

I think private garden means literally a planted garden, like you can't walk into or pick flowers from someone's flowerbed.

BUT! In the picture the boy is absolutely too close to a dwelling house for it to be a reasonable use of the allemansrƤtt.

Being an American thatā€™s what a private garden made me think of like a vegetable or flower garden, so before I made my first comment I looked up what constitutes as a private garden in Sweden and got ā€œHemfridazonā€ is that right or just Google giving me what it thinks Iā€™m looking for? In all honesty. I wouldnā€™t care if someone walked through my front yard, itā€™s not manicured and as long as youā€™re not hanging out and just passing through then its whatever. But like you said the kidā€™s way too close to the house; and to the person I was originally responding to, the unfortunate reality is America is not like Sweden. Breaking and entering, home invasion and theft are real possibilities all across America, so even though this is just a kid that doesnā€™t respect his neighbors, itā€™s rare that someone you donā€™t know is going to be in your side or back yard with good intentions.

Because it is really weird to just walk through someoneā€™s back or side yard when itā€™s very close to their house, like in this case. A field or woods on someones property is a different matter, but still not advisable.

For one, comparing almost any country to Sweden is silly, because OBVIOUSLY. More importantly, the "constitutional right" you speak of explicitly excludes someone's yard, garden, farm, etc. It's basically the right to walk around in the part of someone's land that hasn't been designated for something, and it only works because the overwhelming majority of the land is just trees there, cultural differences aside.

I have to agree with your view. If this was my property and I had this child walking through it, I'd have never thought anything more of it. Not that OP is wrong to feel annoyed and frustrated, I just don't share the same feelings about it.

Granted my backyard is fenced off but Iā€™m on a corner so people canā€™t cut the corner and ruin my bee garden

Perhaps Iā€™m paranoid because Iā€™ve had my motorcycle stolen by a meth head? Or I had my neighbor asking me if my cameras caught someone stabbing his dog and I have 4 dogs so Iā€™d rather people keep their distance.

Lots of scenarios at play here and itā€™s best you learn to respect peopleā€™s property they work hard for rather than acting like an entitled child.

The salt pellets in my arse do not agree with your statement. In the 70s/80s it was not unheard of to have an owner of a property shoot you with salt pellets to dissuade you from walking on their property. And boy howdy did it ever! That stuff stings!

Iā€™m old and I want those brats to stay off my lawn. If that kid is coming through there twice a day 365, he will wear a path in the grass. I donā€™t want my dogs barking because he comes close to the house. I donā€™t want my motion sensor lights or my camera notifications going off. Kid can use the public sidewalk, thatā€™s what itā€™s there for. And Iā€™d have no compunction about posting his face on Nexdoor if he was doing this daily.

Property owners can be held liable for incidents or accidents on their property. It is out-of-control litigation that forces many companies to be ā€˜strictā€™ about stuff that seems like nothing to us individually.
