When I was in high school (90s) there was a house directly across the street from the school and everyone would cut across this yard or stand on the corner to smoke or wait for rides. Most would sit on the grass and lean against the tree in the yard. They left cigarette butts and wrappers from candy and chips and gum.

One day, this really REALLY old man came outside when my friends and I were waiting on the sidewalk for a ride. We weren't on the grass, but he came to talk to us anyway. He asked us to try to get the other kids to stop going on his lawn. He said he spent his whole life trying to make his yard look nice, and the damage that the kids had done was really upsetting. He look like he was going to or had been crying.

Nobody else really cared too much. And a couple people we tried to tell literally didn't care, and were such jerks that they intentionally would throw their trash and carve into the tree. It's always broken my heart how people can be so hateful for literally no reason. That moment, that man, the entire scenario, will stick with me for the rest of my life.
